Apologoies for the One's of the classroom as they were taken through a flywire screen

Was a rather protracted job, called at 1436, completed at 2330
Resources used were....

Victor Harbour 711
Currency Creek 24
Christie Downs 431 (They brought some spill response kits halfway)
Mundoo Car 1 & 2
Burnside Car 1

Good to see the services working well together, with the nearest Hazmat resource being deployed regardless of the appliance color.

What it was, a student broke a mercury thermometer when broken it gave off very pungent odour (possibly from a gas called creone Sp???) causing headaches and nausea to 7 students who were taken to the local medical centre.

The spill was cleaned by MFS and Burnside with some extra mercury spill kit having to come from Christie Downs MFS.

We returned to the scene this afternoon and a small bit of the odour was still present so it's up to the school now as to what to do.

I thought Strathalbyn HazMat and Willunga HazMat might have been called up as well. Couldn't have been too big.

MFS were responded because they were closer and at the time didn't need a second HAZMAT there, and burnside went because they had a vacuum cleaner suitable for the job, but getting them and christies involved was the call of the RO that was liasing with us and that later came to the scene.

True, was up to the GO on the alerts call at the time, but a second hazmat brigade wasn't really needed, as i said before though burnside and christies were only used as they had equipment no one else had!!

Might be picky but maybe better to have them coming rather than make a decision with what someone is telling you on the phone. I bet a few people have been caught out with something a lot worse than was originally explained on the phone. You can alway put a stop on them.
Don't look back. Something might be gaining on you.

Who said it was a 1st alarm? May have been a reduced responce due to the chemical not needing suits?

there is no such thing as a "reduced response" and yes... i have seen "HAZMAT Reduced" paged out...

any call, as soon as the first response is sent is a 'first alarm' regardless of incident type...

I was also suprised that Strathalbyn weren't called in to that job, since they have been the first HAZMAT response for the last 4 HAZMAT jobs at Goolwa.  And since they have the regional HAZMAT trailer with additional gear above and beyond standard stowage.

Yes you have been called first to previous jobs, however the powers that be have woken up to the fact that you guys are almost twice as far away as Victor MFS who carry slpash and full gas tight suits, i completely enjoy working with strath i think they are a fantasic bunch however as we all say it who's closest not the service we favour.

As for a second hazmat at the job, technically yes there should have been however it was one of those jobs that it would have just been a waste, the only reason burnside was there was because they had a proper vacuum cleaner for it....

Would I be right in thinking that when Victor MFS arrived, that station officer Ewens took over as Incident Controller?

Actually, further to this, why would he? I believe Goolwa is CFS area no?
