Research required
« on: August 05, 2008, 05:39:52 PM »
Hello

I'm a published fantasy author writing a fictional character who is a firefighter, and I'm having quite a deal of trouble finding what I need on the net.  So I wondered if anyone in the forum might be generous enough to answer some questions about procedure etc so I can make my character and situation as believable as possible.  He's 28 and lives in a rural area, but he's fighting a house fire the day he gets sucked through the portal into another world.  If you can help, and I'd appreciate that, please email me privately at [email protected]

Many thanks (and by the way, you guys and girls do a GREAT job!)

Sounds like a good book when does it come out.....It may be worth while contacting those at CFS H/Q best to use the chain of command If that fails then lets us know and we may be able to point yu in the right direction...

Wow, that sure sucks for him. Tell me, does he get sucked into a alternate world of logical management practices and competent co workers?

bill why are you telling this poor member to got to CFS HQ? first it is a work of fiction so some discrepancy in from real SOP is fine. And do you want a CFS robot or a realistic fire fighter? (because asking the boots on the ground is probably a much better place)

Of course if there is to be an CFS references then it may be advisable to contact HQ but i don't know of an legal reasons to.

"she" actually, but anyway I'm sure lots of people will be happy to email and impart their wisdom.  As Mr OMG says some stuff can be found on the CFS website, possibly the fireground practices will be useful:  http://www.cfs.org.au/training/fgps.asp

Bah, freedom of speech only doesn't exist if you give a hoot about those upstairs. Once they prove themselves on the back of a pump and through their decisions regarding policy, they will have my respect and I shall listen.

love to know who is doing the slapping Andrew because I don't think you have ever said anything untoward.
Must be a Central Region thing
And it would only be individuals covering their arses!
Thats why our service will decline & CFS will never improve!
If people bothered to look over the border, money is being pumped into our two equivalents & the governments truely value their vollies not muzzle them.
Take it easy mate :-D

There's more arse covering in the SA emergency services than in the showers at a maximum security prison.

Another good place to find some research is to obtain a copy of the CFS book titled "Tried by Fire" by Julie Ann Ellis. This is the story of the SACFS and released in 2001. Copies are available at CFS HQ Level 7, 60 Waymouth Street Adelaide.

If you look here http://www.cfs.org.au/ then go to About Us/Publications, you will find a lot more information including Annual Reports,Fact Sheets,Acts and Regulations, and online copies of our magazine the volunteer.

They probably didnt tell anyone they had them :-P

Maybe they should drag them out to the Heritage Open Day at Naracoorte Oval in October and they will sell like hotcakes.

Suggest that the sort of thing Louise is after is not the published SOPs. Rather the
sorts of decisions made in the real world on arrival about vehicle placement, crew
deployment & tasking & etc.
Given that it's a rural brigade, the building was probably going well before the fire
service was called, allow maybe 6-10 minutes before the first truck rolls, & maybe the
same again before arrival. A minute or three to run out hose, advise sit-rep, etc, etc.

Rescue ?  Forget it. Anyone still inside was dead before first call to 000.
Internal attack? Forget it. Structure already unstable.
Surround-and-drown?  Well we would if only there was adequate water...

CFS called to 6th floor fire in Santos House.
Fire contained by putting in back-burn from the 5th floor...  :-D

(sorry, it's been a long week...)
