No the system we have now is better and the CFA have agreed that our keg tagging/rapid system is better and user friendly...but watch this space and see what more people think....

Currently we have Four Systems....RMB, Lot, Rapid, Hundred Of....the Rural Addressing system is meant to be like the typical suburban addressing system...explained in that video,  using Distance from the nearest major road as the decider of the street number.

This will be supported more by SACAD apparently. I personally think its a great system...ideally to get the Lot System removed!

Remember that this system isnt Just for SA Emergency Services...its also for Postal services...even the general public.

pretty much i dont care about rural addressing for emergency response, as long as the incident can be found quickly without fart assing around.

im more so on the "public's" side...theres no logic in the Lot system...(Lot 1 is there, Lot 2 is 5km down the windy road in a consealed driveway)...the Rapid system relys on the use of a GPS...RMB, Hundred of...ill just say are filtered in the first place.   From the major road..your at 0....500 metres along that road your at 50. Simple as that!

seems to make sense.....if you understand the system then it shouldnt fail you.  Maybe the reason why the vics dont like it is because they dont fully understand it? or they are just slow  :-D

Rapid numbers are ok but in situations where there are multiple house close together a 6 digit rapid number doesnt quite get you to the gate.  Could be any of the three right in front of you.

I don't see that much of an issue with the current system. Aren't the lot numbers usually in numerical order? As long as you have maps that allow you to navigate to those houses there shouldn't be an issue.

If you don't have the maps, then maybe it needs to be looked at?

Bill, would you care to explain why the Vics don't like it?  I can't see why the new system wouldn't work...

Aren't the lot numbers usually in numerical order?

Not always, and sometimes you can have the same lot number twice on the one road (if its a long Rd).  I don't know how they work, but looking at the maps we have in our station, I can't find any logical pattern...

In my area, Lot Numbers are never in order.

a 20min delay searching for a private alarm is very embarassing, simply because we could not find the "Lot 30" that was listed on the pager.  We had adelaide fire call the security company call the owners...no answer on the home phone...then we waited for them to get details from the owners on there mobile (they were in the city)...all that time we just travelled up and down the road (fair long stretch) about 8 times. In the end they sent a description of the entrance to there driveway over the radio.

More needs to be done for residents to assist the emergency services by very clearly identifying their property number at the entrance to the property.

I know it may seem embarrassing being unable to find the location, but the issue is more with the residents giving the correct details to the monitoring company and being aware of what their street address is.

You can have the best system in the world, but if the monitoring company still have the lot no. or the numbers aren't on the front gate, then its not going to make a lick of difference.

Except with the new system, where if the numbers aren't on the gate, you can use your odometer to find it! :)

Or look for the plume of smoke!

Good point though, would work well in isolated areas for sure.

I'm just having issues at the moment with people not being able to make the smallest amount of effort when it comes to calling 000. Rather than complain, people can do so much to enhance our ability to respond to THIER emergency.

Agreed.  But don't worry, SACAD is going to fix it.

No, I know that the CFS reponds to a multitude of differing types of incidents. There are Grassfires, Scrub Fires, Bushfires and Tree Fires, geeze.

We are all talking about residents here, what happens when Joe Bloggs from Collingwood comes across a MVA at Upper Fumbucker West and doesn't know the name of the road. Even if he does know that, he doesn't know what was the last "major road" he crossed so therefore can not help with which 7,556 Sturt Highway he is at, the one at Upper Fumbucker or the one at Lower Licorice Allsort.
If he sees a RAPID plate he doesn't have to know any of this only where he is accurate to 100km and with or without GPS services can go straight there. This new system will render all current maps and street directories useless and will it be compatible with GPS (new software required). What was needed here was education about the existing system..... I can see it will be useful for posties though..

Thats a "loose" unexplained issue with this system mike...but i would assume the most major road the side road branches from.

it is measured from 1 end but the suburb changes.
so a 1 km road from town a to town b

666 smith st a town would be the address

What end of the road is the distance measured from?

And that is the main weakness of the system.
It assumes all persons travelling to an address start from one particular end of
the road, associated with one particular town or locality.

If you come in from the other end of the road, or do not identify with the town
or locality, or if the road doesn't have one end which relates to a township more than the other....

you are stuffed.

(Unless the resident gives you instructions, in which case you don't need a multi-million-dollar numbering scheme...)

RAPID is/was a great system for us.  Not so great for posties.
The new system is great for posties & locals.
On major roads.
Most of the time.

cheers

Forgot to mention... an acquaintance, reasonably senior in SA Lands Dept, says
the new system should be in place sooner rather than later.
Money has been spent.
Drivers have driven most roads in the state, carefully measuring & recording
what looks like the primary entry point to each gazetted land parcel.

What had not been decided as of 2 months ago was exactly how every rural property owner would be notified of their "new" address, & what sort of time-
frame would be allowed for compliance in marking same. Or even IF property ID
marking will be compulsory (probably, but who will enforce it?).

Make it compulsory and the Council's responsibility.

Simply if ya dont have it, or dont have RAPID...your only going to expand the time it takes to find you. If thats a matter of Good Save or Carparking...darn the owners will wish they had better location identification.

A simple solution to the problem of not knowing which end the measuring starts from.

on the road sign put some indicator and on each property sign have an indicator which tells you which end the numbering starts from.

The system wont work (properly) unless each property is signposted.
