FUEL outlet BP On The Run has dropped its unleaded petrol price under $1 a litre for the first time in years.

AdelaideNow has been told the price will remain at 99.9c/L until Wednesday.

Readers reported the price was changed at the BP On The Run on West Tce in the city at about 3.30pm.

The RAA says unleaded prices have not stayed below $1/L for a sustained period since 2004.

Just months ago the unleaded price was 173c/L, but the plunging world oil price has seen fuel prices dip dramatically in recent weeks.

Oil closed at US$49.93 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange overnight - meaning prices have dropped nearly 66 per cent since reaching a record $147.27 a barrel in mid-July.

BP's move will raise pressure on rival fuel companies to follow suit.
