I had a look at the BOM website & found this.....we live in a fascinating country where it is flooding to the north & heatwave to the south.....6.4m of water at Birdsville    :-P

IDS20370
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT - BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY
SOUTH AUSTRALIA REGIONAL OFFICE

FLOOD ADVICE FOR INLAND RIVERS
Issued at 11:05 am on Friday, 23 January 2009

1. FLOOD ADVICE :
DIAMANTINA RIVER SYSTEM
Floodwaters that have been travelling down the Diamantina River during recent
weeks are currently arriving at the Queensland/South Australia border at
Birdsville.  Upstream at Roseberth Station the river levels are steady above
Major flood level. At Birdsville the Diamantina River has reached 6.37 metres
and continues to rise above Moderate flood level.

Flood waters are expected to flow into South Australia in this area today and
will progress towards Goyder's Lagoon and Lake Eyre in the coming weeks.

GEORGINA/EYRE CREEK SYSTEM
There has been Major flooding along much of the Georgina River in Queensland for
the last two weeks. Floodwaters at Bedourie, Cluny and Glengyle [Eyre Creek]
have remained steady above Major flood level during the last week. Recent
rainfall has contributed to renewed local rises in small creeks and tributaries.

Floodwaters on Eyre Creek are expected to reach the South Australian border in
about one to two weeks time.

Travellers in these areas are reminded to take care at creek crossings and to
seek information on track conditions and closures from DTEI; either by telephone
[1300 361 033] or via the internet
[http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/quicklinks/northern_roads/northern.asp]

2. RIVER HEIGHT OBSERVATIONS :
For the latest river heights refer to
http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/qld/west.shtml

Eyre Ck at Glengyle    5.23m Steady at Major   6.30am Fri 23/01/09

Sorry Robert, not an official heatwave until 5 days over 35, or three days over 40......

And high temperature doesn't always equal fire ban....tomorrow is predicted to be hot in numerous areas, but no bans...so presumably, very little wind happening...hope it stays like that   :-D

Im taking a punt and guessing that Tuesday and Thursday will be the busiest although Wednesday could be a busy day with moderate notherlies but anything is possible we just go to expect the unexpected

I am thankful i've got a supervisor who will allow me to leave work for fire calls if the incident is big enough  :-)

Hmm, now what chores shall I do when it's really hot - should I go and cut that steel up with my angle grinder or maybe weld up that old water tank in the paddock...... no.... I think this week I'll get the mower out and trim up the stoney paddock at the side of the scrubby area next to the haystack and the shed full of vintage machinery......

Don't laugh, there's some ****wit out there thinking this right now........

Minor correction to Bill - in CFA a Code Red day is not just a TFB day.

Code Red is really for internal use, as a means of advising levels of preparedness and response (there are also Codes Green, Yellow & Orange). The Code Red definition may vary slightly from region to region, but it is generally when the forecast FDI is greater than 35. For a predominately forested area they will work on the forest FDI (naturally), for a grassland area the grassland FDI. For a mixed area, an average of the forest and grassland FDIs is taken.

A TFB is usually called when the forecast FDI is likely to be 50 or above in three (sometimes two) selected (strategic) locations within the fire ban district. So our preparedness and response on a TFB day is the same as for a Code Red day, which it is anyway, being above FDI 35.

In terms of advising the public we still tend to use terms like Low, Medium, High, Very High & Extreme fire danger.

What is good, is that where the forecasts show a string of probable Code Red or potential TFB days coming up, then yes getting the media advice out there asap is very important.
