On Site now...

fire is confined to plastics and fuel store in large yard.

Onsite fire teams fought fire back from fuel tanks and plant using fire extinguishers and hose... Trained very very well!

largest round of CoQ I can remember. Big night!

Amazing that CFS are CoQ in a very large number of SAMFS stations. Plus several CFS crews at the job!

Difficult night for comms to manage, doing a good job!

Youth held as fire engulfs Kilburn plastics factory

September 14, 2009 06:10pm

..DEVELOPING: ONE youth has been apprehended and houses around a Kilburn plastics factory have been evacuated after a disastrous fire took hold tonight.

Police have allegedly apprehended a youth over the incident.

A 1km air exclusion zone is in place above the fire.

At least 88 firefighters are on the scene, working in three seperate sectors.

The MFS is working with Port Adelaide Enfield Council to relay water from the council depot.

The fire is well advanced, burning plastic pallets inside the factory.

Two Environmental Protection officers are filming the toxic fumes, which are blowing in a northeasterly direction.

It was believed the fire started in two metal containers containing plastics for reycyling.

Concerns about toxic fumes blowing east towards Prospect Rd prompted police to start clearing the area about 7.20pm.

Shortly before 7.15pm, three explosions were heard from the fire.

The fire is threatening to take hold in hundreds of bales of recycled plastic and is also threatening a LPG tank nearby.

Fifteen houses near the factory have been evacuated, but no one has been injured so far.

The huge blaze is causing traffic chaos in the inner-northern suburbs, with traffic jams on Prospect, Kilburn and Grand Junction roads and several crashes.

The fire started in Plastics Granulating Services, on Inwood Ave, about 5.50pm, sending a thick plume of black smoke across the northern suburbs.

A witness said one of the factory's workers saw three youths with skateboards jumping a rear fence and fleeing moment after the fire started.

Up to 30 MFS appliances are battling the blaze, however they are reporting serious problems with water supply.

Flames about 40m high are burning into the sky, and the base of the fire is at least 40m wide.

The fire is right next to Housing Trust homes and any residents who have not been evacuated are advised to stay indoors with their windows closed.

Meanwhile, two MFS appliances battled a kiln fire in a factory in Camden Park.

It's believed the fire started in timber resin in a factory on Mooringie Ave about 7pm.

Some strange COQ's happening. All they need to do is look in the SOP's and it tells them who to send where, just backfill those stations with other CFS, rather than sending people totally unfamiliar with how MFS operate...eg Hermitage.

Yes, some real strange calls about appliances last night.
Had to laugh when they needed more pumpers and what they got.

Well there is only 6 pumpers within coooeeeee of the city if you go as far as Mt Barker, 1 of them was tied up at a going house fire, Happy Valley, and I think Eden Hills were at a fire at Camden Park. Which doesn't leave much ! The only actual pumper that attended the fire was Burnside.

So from what I can work out, the fire didn't involve the structure, it was about a billion old plastic coke bottles ? Nice effect, all those 10c coins wasted haha

At those who may think about being picky.......let's refrain from picking things to pieces!
Talk through things but don't assume you know how things did or did not get done. Or that you know better than those making decisions last night. Decisions are made in the pressure cooker of a large job. Please don't be an arm chair AIIMS consultant who thinks they know more than those who actually ran the job.

There was certainly a lot of resource required and many CFS brigades had their first run at CoQ. No problem with that.

Certainly tested the states ability to handle a normal workload and provide resource for a large job.

Be good to hear from anyone at the job or those that did a CoQ and ran to SAMFS jobs.....

On the drive down the hill we were tiring to workout the last time a Bridgewater appliance had parked in Stn 20 on COQ, we believe it would have been around the early 1980's and that time we were driving and "Acco".

Certainly was interesting to spend some time looking at how the other side operate. At around 0100, we along with Barker and Aldgate were responded to the Kilburn fire, reading some of the comments here, it really didn't make a difference as to what type of appliance you were on as long as it carried BA and you had operators available. Our trucks were only used for transport.

We were tasked with dealing with any hot-spots amongst piles of molten plastic, working off Blackwood CAFS that was being fed water from Angle Park.

Overall an interesting but tiring experience. Cheers

The fire was all out at mid-day. Only one shipping container left smoldering. Fire did not touch any building just blackened the walls in some spots. The clean will start tonight and be finished by friday night.

Woodville skyjet was cleaning up spots most of day.

Would be interesting to see what fire systems are installed after this... ie more hydrants, fire team training.

It was a LPG tank that was threatened which is being replaced overnight due to heat cracks that happened dueing day. The factory stayed operational in the Inwood avenue section all night and the Blackburn st section as well with 1 plants spacing and fog nozzles on walls to keep internal cool.

The Company only lost small amounts in the yard which was very small section of the total yard!

And reached the 40 tonne forklift, trucks, granulated plastics, shreaded plastics and jumped the fence into any of the neighbouring businesses? or got into the plant...

The whole area would be still on fire and the retained would be called in... We got away very luckily... the yard goes a long way into the site. Luckily the petrol bulk tank was empty, and the silos drained via vacumn to another silo at the other end of site...

SO what do you think they need? Lack of water so boosters? Hydrants? Wheeled units? maybe even their own truck in a static position?

Thoughts?

Same issue happens every job out there, only about a 2nd alarm worth needed for the fire, but the water supply out there is shocking to say the least, so lots of relays and boosting needed. As daft as it sounds, MFS could do with a decent size tanker.

It was a good night, thought the comms operator on 150 was very professional, particularly when dealing with some CFS brigades not so used to talking to adelaide fire for more than 2 words. . .

Got back to station a little after midnight, what time did the guys get back who went to the job from 20?

Athelstone 34P left at 19:30 and was tasked with fighting the fire and cooling then around 22:30 we changed over with fresh BA crews who where tasked to pull out most the hose then put out hot spots and a container going strong.

As we were thinking of going home we got called to take over from 451 pumping relay to the skyjet which was interesting.

Athelstone was back in station at 4:00am
