Not with the above pager message, but....

Quite a few SES Units are starting training exercises from home. The members know that an exercise is to start in the morning, but not sure when. Gives the crew practise in opening the LHQ, staggered responding of vehicles (not all at the same time because of different members travel time to LHQ), senior people organising before officers arrive, etc, etc. A bit more reality in the exercise.

Yep....

ETSA routinely clean the insulators - move dust & grim and whatever else settles on them....

Often they use a small helicopter, with someone hanging out the side, squirting the insulators.....

Might be a fire ban day, but wont take them long to drop everything and run if they get a job.

Hi All,

I am just writing to advise you that the pager site will be out of action until Friday the 23rd of March 2007. This is due to ongoing maintenance of this service.

I would appreciate any donations in order to ease the running costs that are increasing every month. You can donate by using the paypal tab on the front of the scansa.hopto.org website.

There are currently over 500 people daily using this site, some days peaking to 1000 users!

This is putting a huge amount of load on the system, thus the need for upgrades.

Thanks

how much outgoing data per day/month are we talking about?
(I assume that's the main cost?)

so that's about 15Gb per month outgoing data.  Are internode not happy with that amount of usage?  (their T&C's just says for non-commercial use but doesn't mention any data transfer figures)

Have you considered something like http://dreamhost.com ?  for about AU$10 per month you get 160Gb storage and and 1.5Tb of data transfer per month.  Or http://regtld.com is even cheaper, about AU$6 per month for 5Gb space and 250Gb transfer.

[pardon the ad but...]
following on from above re: dreamhost, I use them and am a happy camper, if you (or anyone) do decide to sign up with them then, if you use my promo code "dh50sacfsorg", you get US$50 discount off any plan (and I get a kickback too!).  The plans are here: http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?156028/hosting.html

you can run your own pdw setup quite easily rather then rely on others.

all you need is a cheap scanner, audio cable and the pdw software.

And when you mention a cheap scanner, suitable ones are the old ones that are no longer any good for listening to trunked networks....there are likely to be lots of people with old scanners tucked away in the shed, seemingly no good anymore...

And the PDW software is free......

And again, you only need Windows 95 on your old computer to make it all work.   :-D

Not sure what other info you need, but I'll try...

The old scanners we are talking about are the old ones that everyone used to have to listen to CFS, pre-GRN days... but didn't work too well when GRN came in, and hence people tucked them away somewhere, and no longer use them.....

The PDW file is downloadable from the web for free....I'll see if I can find the address...

The PDW is a simple program, which doesn't take up huge amounts of space on your PC...and a Windows 95 machine will do the job....

More info about the scanning is available on SA Scan website
