Busy Day Yesterday For CFS Brigades Around South Australia

Hiya everyone its me i figured that now would be a good time to get everyones thoughts and views on yesterday's weather conditions which caused a few burn offs to go all haywire and get out of control resulting in brigades being dispatched

Down here in Region 5 the winds along with something else were not quite sure what it was  started a scrub fire just 1 km up the Wandilo road coming off Kalangadoo-Glencoe road which resulted in Kalangadoo,Millicent,Mount Burr,Glencoe,Tantanoola,Wandilo and the Mount Gambier Forestry Depot being dispatched

Did anyone else get called out yesterday to anything that the winds caused

Yeah some moron thought it was a good day to burn off some Yacka bushes in 50 knots of wind, luckily it was still green around otherwise the northern edge of Port Elliot would have been in some serious trouble......

SES SHQ set off all pagers in the morning when BOM (Bureau of Meterology) issued severe weather warning. At that time State moved to Yellow level.

Four volunteer crew and SDO (State Duty Officer) in SES SCC (State Control Centre). RDO (Regional Duty Officers) and some Units began processes such has regular telephone conference calls.

More volunteer crew to SCC at 1200 and other crew availability assessed. More SHQ staff at SCC (eg OHS&W and Media). State moved to Orange level.

Extra crew requested to SCC at 1315 because incoming telephone calls (CommsIn) from the public being received steadily. I arrived at 1330 and four operators on CommsIn telephones with three telephones from the public regularly active. I had the fun of operating the GRN CentraCom monitoring B01 talkgroup and assisting AirSource paging operator.

A total of eight volunteers from SHU at SCC.

Approximately 35 taskings processed. Majority of taskings in adel hills, eastern metro and northern metro regions. Somes taskings at Whyalla, Victor Harbor and other areas.

Major tasking was a specialised vertical team requested to a two storey hotel with loose roofing iron at Elizabeth South. Recce crew on site did not have the experience or equipment.

Majority of taskings seemed to be a result of trees or branches falling on something.

SCC closed at 1715 because no calls from the public coming in. State moved to Yellow level.

I understand MFS ComCen had a steady stream of taskings during the night, but nothing major.

SDO alerted all SES pages that State at Green level this morning.

yeah mate - Coro, Cherry Gdns and Clarendon attended this burnoff out of control yesterday... on scene for a fair while...

ha ha, that must suck, it looks like a quite new truck, and wow, that burnoff really did go out of hand.

for this time of year, wow , i wouldn't think that a fire could burn that much while it is still wet enough to get bogged

Just curious Mack does Coro roll their 24P as primary for all calls? If so is that just because it's a superior appliance or your 24 is a bucket of filtered??

24p goes first to everything unless we are heading way out of area, it has even gone to a few strike teams...

plus, the 24..... it could be better

How did the recovery go? Good to see a snatch/recovery strap was on hand. Do all brigades in the group carry them?

I had a nice dusty drive from Tailem bend to Naracoorte dust and wind all over the place and my littel red work car almost got blowen off the road afew times. the fdi was high in some area's and I am betting that we are going to be in for a bad summer and with little rain finding water is going to be a big problem.....

The IMC which was our Group Officer called for 2 tankers to be dispatched to that scrub fire along with a fire king plus you are right Blinky we might be in for a bad summer with the lack of rian we've had

It's a big worry that it would burn so well when everything is green and obviously WET ...not sure if I would advertise how the appliance was retrieved...there are issues with towing..we've discussed this on another thread..

appliance ended up being retreived by a tractor i believe...

Coro 24p attempted recovery using a snat chstrap connected to approved towing points on both appliances, however this failed for some reason, i am unsure why as i was not there...

all group 'strike team' vehicles carry group funded snatch straps

I don't have any issues with snatch straps...but I do with towing chains..(which there are some secretly stowed on appliances)...finding a tractor to tow is probably a better option all round...if possible!

yeah, we are about to hit water restrictions in a week :S its gonna be a really hot summer hear, the weather dude on channel ten said that the water level is well lower then wat we had last fire season which was the grampian fires.

the rain we have had over the past day will only settle the dust,but I do think after talking to a number of group officers in CFA/CFS that this will be a nasty fire season and with little rain dams and water points are dry..So BYO BWC to all rural fire calls......

Do i hear the sound of pagers singing out everyday during the 06-07 fire season  cause that is likely to happen if our season is gonna be bad
