In a recent post re Freeway I mentioned a video which was available by CFA called "Getting there safely" which follows the crew from Geelong CFA around and is a good driver training video for brigades.
I have made contact with CFA HQ and they are sending me a copy of it.
They dont have an issue with copying for other brigades who would like it.
Might actually make some drivers aware of their obligations of COSO 8 and ARR rules

Great video,and its worth while the whole brigade watch it as its not only for the driver but the whole crew...

Is that the old one - CFA produced many years ago, or have they up dated it!

Interesting to se that many of us see response driving as an issue, yet corporately we can't look across the boarder and use what they have - as a starting point!

Correct ozfire...its the 1989 version.While across the border it still teaches drivers common sense and the standard issues of turnouts,priority based on information recieved,dressing before getting on the appliance,etc

Well the good folks at CFA have now provided me with the updated version (1993)Title "It Could Never Happen To Us" on DVD.

I will send mengcfs and Darius the updated copy as well

yep I have that and will be doing a session on that later on for our guys,did they tell you why they made a new one?

the story goes a number of CFA appliances where involved in MVA on way to call outs and driver of appliances where not aware of their legal rights.... remember it all goes back to the driver of the appliances and not the OIC of the appliances......Also seatbelts must be worn in all cases of appliances moving code 1 or code 3
in Victoria.....something that needs looking at here down the track...

Good morning Blinky...correct CFA have had their share of MVA's in appliances and this is a good way to educate CFS drivers of the responsibilities that go with Priority 1 driving in an appilance.

CFA have had two fatals in the last 12 months and its not a good image on the news for anyone.

Both those deaths where on the fireground,as this video shows it deals with driving an appliance from the station to the fire ground and its very well done.I had a couple of members here for lunch and they agree its time CFS looked at driver education/off road driving/road laws and that it done as part of a course rather than when you get a new appliance...

Some urban brigades actually do assessments and competency based driver training before letting drivers go priority 1.

True a lot of brigades are doing that,ours included but dont agree with letting drivers who have just come off their "L" plates driving a truck that they are not fully familiar with its handling,and power characteristics jumping straight into doing Priority 1's,something that needs to be gradually introduced for the safety of all on board

We are the same, no one is allowed to do P1 driving as as soon as they get they're full lisence, they drive with crew on board at training and on the way back from jobs until they get more experience.

Reinforcement of the SOP - where seatbelts are fitted, they must be worn!

Reminds me of the fires in Vic a few years ago - where we had Vic Pol addres us, due to some of our crews standing on the back of some CFA appliances whilst in motion!

and it does'nt stop there I have seen numerous CFS appliances do the same and the OIC's should be more vigilant to stamp out this practice prior to arriving on the fireground

SOPs state that the driver must be belted in, whether P1 or not...

ther rest is just up to common sense i guess...

Road Traffic Act states seatbelts are to be worn if fitted to the vehicle.SOP's cant overide the RTA

Following recent incidets both here and interstate I'm sure the rewrite of the SOP will say all members must wear seat belts where fitted!

Common sence really - imaging a police car responding to an incident and the cops not wearing seat belts!

I heard cops dont have to wear belts somewhere, they can also talk on the phone and drive. Not sure how accurate the belt comment is though so dont take it as gospel.

The new rucks have signs in them saying to always wear a seatbelt, was in Dalkeiths 34Penis for the royal show demo.

I believe any driver in any emergency vehicle can drive whilst using a mobile??
