SAMFS / Re: 431 broken
« on: September 08, 2007, 12:33:21 AM »
The chances of this happening now to the pumpers is somewhat remote now!
Well, to SAMFS Scania's anyhow.

There was a extensive modification performed on all the Scania's in the fleet, which included not just a mesh filter, but a whole new alloy air filter box to replace the plastic one, new fire resistant hoses and fittings, and a fire resistant air filter.

I know this, because I did ours!

Cheers, Mat

Mills Tui build very good vehicles!!

They have been operating in Queensland, just out of Brisbane for a few years now with their HQ still in NZ.

I have seen a lot of their Aussie manufactured buses and coaches in my travels of my previous work, and their work is pretty good.

I don't recall any mechanics on my course and the one that resigned decided that the job wasn't for them during the recruit course.

I love listening to B.S when I know the facts!! :-)
The last intake of 14 recruits did not have 12 of whom had relatives in the service!
* Five were ex Retained Firefighters from Mount Gambier. (me being one)
* One resigned during course.
* Two had fathers in the job, but both would of had three or four attempts to get in, so I don't see favouritism there!
* Six others were mixture of all sorts of occupations.
The testing is hard and if you miss out have another go!
Not many applicants make it the first time, so keep trying!

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Female Firefighters in the Media
« on: March 10, 2007, 04:27:49 PM »
What annoyed me about the media story about Mt Gambier Station having the highest percentage of female firefighters, is that the great work performed by ALL the stations firefighters (male and female) is really overshadowed by a percentage!

If equality if what is wanted by everyone, then the media needs to stop making such a big deal out of "female firefighters".
They are performing their job well, just as good and better than some male counterparts, so stop going on with the BS and refer to them as firefighters.

As for gender, ethnicity balance, what a load of crap!!

People should be selected on their suitability for the job, not because an organisation has to have a percentage of gender or ethnicity.

If anyone has a real interest into getting into a job they really want, they would do plenty of research and make sure they have everything spot on before applying.
And if it doesn't happen the first time, find out where you went wrong and try again!!

Anyhow, enough ranting and raving,
Regards, Mat

Howdy everyone!
I'm finally back home! :-D

It's great to be back home again, but for good this time.
We start on station this coming Monday which we are all looking forward to, but will probably feel a bit strange for a few days until we settle in again!
I will be on this site more often again as I am back on the good old reliable home internet connection which I lacked whilst in Adelaide.

Anyhow, chat to you all soon!

Regards, Mat

Your right about the bullet being toasty!! :-D

I was on one of the advancing hoselines and it was a bit warm, but impressive to watch thru the fog pattern!

Brukunga was a great part of the course, which I think everyone enjoyed.

Howdy!!

I'm back online for a moment so I thought I'd say G'Day to everyone.

Just about thru week ten of fourteen, so things are moving along quite quickly now!

Finished all modules such as BA, RCR, Pumps, Hazmat etc and are starting scenario drills shortly before going to Brukunga for Hot Firepad in the second to last week.

Cannot wait to get home and be operational again as I am sure I am getting withdrawal symptoms!

Anyhow, until next time, keep safe!

Regards, Mat

SA Firefighter General / Re: What is underneath your PBI?
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:47:16 PM »
From what I heard not long ago was that PBI Gold, unlike Proban etc. met the correct standards for protection without anything underneath!

I believe there may of been trials by SAMFS for a "shorts" like garment to be worn underneath the overpants and the usual t-shirt under the coat, but I don't know what the outcomes of this trial were.
