Just out of curiosity, if the Flashoods aren't approved by the CFS, does that mean that technically we can't wear our own clothes under our PPE either, unless its approved by CFS? :-P

A CD may be slightly more successful though.

I agree that too much paperwork is bad, but I'd rather be handed some paperwork to read than a CD, unless it was a DVD with useful training (or something) on it.
In my experience, CD based reading material is useless especially when you consider the sort of people that are likely to want to join the CFS... (No offense meant to anyone)

Incident Operations / Re: station stats
« on: August 01, 2005, 03:35:22 PM »

and whats the deal with vertical rescue, I'm aware that Naracoorte are trained in it (???) but surely its an SES responsibility

Stirling is also rope rescue trained, although vertical rescue requires more specialist equipment, for which we respond MFS or the STAR Force, rather than SES...

This might sound like a stupid question, but how many BA sets are there on the 24P? and are there any sets on the 24?

Just got a kitten, first time she has been around when the pager goes- she must have jumped a clear foot off the ground! :-D
haha! Classic :-D

Stirling had 330 last year...

Country Fire Service / What's a pumper?
« on: August 01, 2005, 03:15:45 PM »
A recent CFS media release about the new Ededn pumer said this:

The new appliance - an 'Isuzu FTR900' chassis - is one of three currently in South Australia. It carries 2,000 litres of water and has a rear mounted pump capable of distributing 3,000 litres per minute at 1,000kpa. It is primarily designed for structural firefighting and can assist in hydrant 'boosting' giving it the title of 'Pumper'.

Does this mean that "Pumper" simply means it can boost at a hydrant booster, and if so, does this mean that a non pumper should not be used to boost? Or are there other things that make a pumper a pumper?

Thanks for that Firefrog, I like being able to read thw whole page :)

Does anyone know what they are planning to do?  How are they going to show off what the CFS does in 15 minutes?
Or will it just be a bit of Extinguisher fun with people in BA or splash suits?

Yeah a 3 stage , 750 GPM Darley pump, some of those have had the third stage disabled but don't know which one's. That pump is how your pumper should be, but isn't for reason's I am sure you are well aware of!!
Its a 2 stage pump [Sorry, got it wrong before]....
I *believe* that Stg pumper will be either having a second stage installed, or a new pump fitted while its offline this time... just to get it closer the the original specs... :|

Terrorism / Re: What would you do?
« on: June 23, 2005, 06:22:31 PM »
Well, according to media, I think the recent powder incidents were related with the Corby case in Bali...??

I think those incidents were more like very bad pranks, than terrorist attacks, but good point! :)

All Equipment discussion / Re: Wet Weather Gear - Do you have it?
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:55:44 PM »
Do any of you have the trouble that because wet weather gear isn't personal, its not looked after properly? ie. put back in the truck wet, and it goes mouldy?

I like there equipement etc, but hate there tactics. Too many F/F's are lost every year over there!!

All you have to do to see that is watch Ladder 49... All the actors in that Film had done the fire fighters training, and did as they were trained in the movie...  Thats a worry...

SA Firefighter General / Re: Museum
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:37:00 PM »
I'd love a fire museum... Its amazing how far firefighting, (Rescue and HAZMAT included), has come even in the last 10 years... I would certainly support a Museum to show that...

Terrorism / Re: What would you do?
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:34:06 PM »
I certainly think the media hypes it up too much... While every citizen does have a right to know whats happening, they are probably more likely to die of cancer than get attacked by a terrorist...

However at the same time, it probably falls just as much on the politicians that encourage hype... If we started a "war on Cancer" there would probably be just as much hype over cancer...

And just out of curiosity, Does anyone know why these terrorists are attacking? Are they random attacks for fun, or is there a problem that the west is refusing to acknowledge?

There were NPWS appliances at the recent scrubby at Mylor, so they were still working 2 weeks ago...

The Station Looks Pretty Strong & Well Built To Me What Damage Occurred?

From what I could see on TV, it looked like the front part of the roof was ripped off, and the front of the building was damaged...

Country Fire Service / Re: Equipment Issue (Personal)
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:14:35 PM »
Full PPE: (Gloves, Boots, Bunker Pants, Turnout coat, Goggles, Dust Mask, Structural Helmet)
We also get a sunhat, and a T-shirt.
Other brigade clothing, (caps, polo shirts, beanies, bomber jackets, etc, all with brigade name), can be ordered through the brigade but must be paid for by us volunteers.
I'd love nomex workshirts, and especially wet weather gear!

The problem with having a standard, is that the CFS will end up supplying the bare minimum, (in my opinion), and the brigades that might need the extra gear will miss out, because its not standard...

SAMFS / Re: 133 - Where is it from?
« on: June 22, 2005, 03:02:07 PM »
on the side of the cab should be a card holder, this is where the call sign card goes.
Yeah, Sorry, thats what I was talking about... It has 133 in the cardholders and on the roof...

It goes very nicely for a 26yo truck... and what a pump! :-o

SAMFS / 133 - Where is it from?
« on: June 20, 2005, 02:59:43 PM »
Hey! We currently have a replacement Mets truck while our pumper is being fixed... Its an old International Acco, and has the callsign "133". I can't find any reference to a Mets station number "13"...
Does anyone know where this truck may have originally come from?

Country Fire Service / Re: water carting
« on: June 06, 2005, 01:42:01 PM »
I like the idea.. I'm not sure that I'd drink water out of one of our tanks, even if it was clean, but if we have the resources to help the community in yet another way, why not?

Country Fire Service / Re: New Operations Staff for CFS
« on: June 05, 2005, 06:46:42 PM »
If they are hiring an extra 4 staff, and the funding starts at $612,000 a year, where is the extra money going? Or are the staff getting paid REALLY well?

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Why?
« on: June 02, 2005, 03:31:20 PM »
I noticed there was a female firefighter in a splash suit on the front of the paper this morning... (The Canberra thing), but somehow I doubt that any 'civilian's' would have noticed / cared....

All Equipment discussion / Re: air bag's
« on: May 30, 2005, 11:29:34 PM »
I believe they need to be replaced once they are out of date. We just had ours replaced, and although i think they can be tested, (Hydrotested?) the CFS recommends replacing them.
(To be tested, they need to be sent back to the manufacturer)

This may be a stupid question, but why would the UFU be needing money? What would they be fundraising for?
