Country Fire Service / Re: Black Tuesday DVD
« on: May 28, 2005, 10:26:03 PM »
In the DVD, they say that some international reporters found it hard to believe that the CFS are volunteers...

Does that mean that they don't have volunteer fire-fighters in some other countries? What countries are they?

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Why?
« on: May 28, 2005, 04:18:01 PM »
Although I agree that we need to encourage women to join the CFS, we could also say that we need programmes to encourage younger people to join, or older, retired people to help with communications etc...  :? :|

Forum Suggestions / Words to add to the Dictionary
« on: May 28, 2005, 04:00:31 PM »
I just thought I'd start a thread where people can put words that need to be added to the spelling correction dictionary...
(I like to check my posts for spelling before I post, and it makes it much easier when words (or initials) like "CFS" don't come up as errors)
So heres a few to start off:
  • CFS
  • MFS
  • SES
  • SAPOL
  • NPWS
  • MVA
  • Scania

SA Firefighter General / Re: NEW APPLIANCES
« on: May 28, 2005, 03:54:06 PM »
It seems a bit like everytime a new appliance is required for the CFS we need to reinvent the wheel. Time to just look around at what other services use and see whether it's appropriate for our use.
Exactly James. eg, why aren't the CFS using the same Scania pumpers the MFS have?
-It seems like the CFS doesn't want to be seen with the same looking appliances as another service... even if it is a different colour...

Incident Operations / Re: Burn offs
« on: May 26, 2005, 10:42:58 PM »
I think it would be a wise move any way, fair enough it might piss a couple of people off, but hey, its worth it if it saves a house / life in the long run.

By the way we've been going, it won't be the long run, it will save a house in the very near future. Either extend the fire danger season, or have massive media coverage of the CFS saying
"Although the fire Danger Season is over, we recommend that you Don't burn until we say it's safe to do so!"

Does that mean you don't keep it with the rest of your PPE? ie Do you only have as many sets as seats on the trucks?

All Equipment discussion / Wet Weather Gear - Do you have it?
« on: May 26, 2005, 04:00:26 PM »
We've been trying to get wet weather gear for our brigade for the last 5 years, and have been having a lot of trouble. One of the main is that "It's not standard stowage".

Although I'm pretty sure we should have it by next winter, I'm wondering how many other brigades are having this same issue? Considering that the CFS attends a substantial number of MVA's, and that MVA's often occur when its raining, maybe we should look at changing what is "standard stowage"...

SA Firefighter General / SAFECOM
« on: May 26, 2005, 03:53:30 PM »
The SAFECOM Bill was introduced into parliament this week.
All I know about it is that it will be an joining of the CFS, MFS and SES.

Does anyone else know more details, like how they want it done?

And what do people think about this?  Will it be good for the CFS or bad?

Country Fire Service / Re: When is a Volunteer a Volunteer
« on: May 25, 2005, 03:18:40 PM »
I think the word 'Volunteer' when referring to the CFS actually refers to us volunteering our time, rather than being voluntary in the way we work.
So we are volunteering to fight the fire, not volunteering how to fight it (if that makes any sense :|)

Country Fire Service / Re: Elect or Appoint
« on: May 25, 2005, 03:10:14 PM »
I think its important that the crew votes for the people who will lead them. I like to be able to trust the people who have my life in their hands, and election is the only way to make sure that happens.

However, I think the main problem is the point oz_fire made earlier about finding people to fill the positions. In my opinion, that is going to be one of the major issues the CFS will have to face in the near future.

If an officer is appointed, does that mean they have to stay as an officer until they leave the CFS, or will there be re-appointments every 2 years?

{Note for Firefrog, it might be a good idea to add "CFS" to the dictionary :wink:}

SA Firefighter General / Re: what does the VFBA do????
« on: May 24, 2005, 05:42:10 PM »
Last night we had Wendy Shirly from the VFBA come and give us a lecture about the VFBA. This was really good, as it allowed us to ask questions, and find out a bit about what they are trying to do for us, and when we can ask them for help... I recommend that everyone tries to get one of these lectures to their brigades...
The VFBA has put out some glossy brochures about what they do, and what they have planned – If you haven't go them yet, I'm sure they'd be pleased to send some out to your brigade. :-)

We've already been to 7 out of control burnoffs in the last week. It seems that people don't realise that there can still be fire danger out of the fire danger season...

It Would Be Good If The Pagers Had A Little Speaker In Them.  Eg The Pager Drop Tone Sounds, Then A Voice Read's The Pager Job.

Hahaha! That would be gold if you forgot to put in on vibrate in a meeting or concert etc... It'd just be that much more embarrassing... but it would be good for when you're in the shower and get a call... :P

Yes, I have noticed MFS wearing them, I had just didn't know they were actually PPE... Things like that would be fantastic, especially now that we aren't supposed to have removable liners... :?

SA Firefighter General / what does the VFBA do????
« on: May 16, 2005, 04:53:33 PM »
Yeah, while I appreciate what they do for us, I've never met any VFBA members... Probably not a good thing seeing as they are supposed to be representing the volunteer, rather than the group/region.

Having said that, any problems we have can be brought to them via our VFBA rep, and I think we have a training night coming up, where a member from the VFBA will be giving us a lecture... So while there is no real need for them to meet us, its a very nice idea...

Whats the deal with these workshirts? Are they like a normal shirt with fireproofing? and how do they work (Do you change your shirt while responding to a rural job, and that means you don't need a turnout coat???)

Incident Operations / station stats
« on: May 13, 2005, 06:26:31 PM »
Our call numbers are up as well... I don't know what jobs have pushed the numbers up, (Although MVA is most likely), we haven't had any freak storms either... we are now above our total for last year...
(We've done about 280 calls so far this year, and we got about 280 last year... so with a month and a half to go, we'll end up with a much higher call tally)

I Like That Idea. Subdomains Of CFS.  Does That Mean That They Will Have To Host The Site's Then?

It depends on what setup they have... It's technically possible to point it anywhere, but there would be situations where you can't, or they don't want to make it possible... Butr then again, if the CFS was hosting for free, that would be awesome...

Excellent question.. I've been wondering the same thing...
Also, does any one know if its possible to get a subdomain of cfs.org.au? (ie have www.stirling.cfs.org.au)

All Equipment discussion / NEW CFA 4000lt tanker
« on: May 03, 2005, 01:56:26 PM »
When you say 'Tanker', do you mean the equivalent of our 24's? (or 44's) Because I can't see much use in a Tanker that carries only 400 litres... even with the 4WD benefits...

MYGOD!! I have to totally agree there! They were absolutely fantastic, and did an excellent job with the limited resources they had…

Also, thanks to the St Johns volunteers for coming over… and we can’t forget the SES… …the incredible effort they made to put up those tents… …and they managed to stay clean the whole time… :P

SA Firefighter General / 'Contained' and 'Controlled'
« on: May 02, 2005, 01:22:14 PM »
As fire fighters, we all know the difference between contained and controlled fires.
However, I don't think the CFS has done enough to let the wider community know the difference. It seems to me, that when a fire is declared Contained, the public (or the media) seem to treat the fire as though it’s under control, and is nothing to worry about...
Apart from being dangerous for residents, I think its also damages the CFS's reputation, as when a fire jumps containment lines, it appears that we've lost control of it...
Should the CFS be doing more to highlight the difference? or is it a problem with the media?
