For anyone interested the ABC's New Inventors have a episode on "Fighting Fire" this week. It's going to feature the CFA Light Tanker, Guardian Comms System and EYEfi SPARC.

The Victorian version costs $120,000. Seems very expensive for a glorified slip-on.

The USA have a "Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Centre" where all safety reports/investigations are published.

I also cannot understand why in Australia these reports aren't made public.

Emergency Aircraft / Re: SA watches trial of giant waterbomber

From http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/state-government-to-lease-multi-million-dollar-fire-fighting-jet/story-e6frf7jo-1225795179869

A MULTI-million dollar super water-bomber capable of soaking a 1.2km bushfire in one hit will join our firefighting arsenal this summer.
The water-bombing jet will be able to reach anywhere in Victoria in just 45 minutes, and is being billed as an important weapon in heading off another Black Saturday disaster.

With forecasts of a fierce summer, Premier John Brumby moved quickly to get an Australian-first firefighting jet lease, most likely a modified DC-10 or 747 jumbo carrier.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Bob Cameron told the Herald Sun the aircraft would be one important weapon in fighting fires and protecting Victorians.

"This will be another asset as we leave no stone unturned to help deliver on our goal of making Victoria as fire safe and as fire ready as possible," he said.

I think it's odd with all our modern technology, we are still using a FDI that was developed in 1967.

The Light Tanker is due to be tested in the CSIRO Bushfire Simulator (Burnover Simulator) in April/May. It could be a "firey end" for the Light Tanker.

I'm sorry for any misinterpretations in my last post. I've tried to correct the errors.

I think its important to remember that no firefighters were lost on Black Saturday. In some cases this was due to luck but improved training, tankers and safety first firefighting since the Linton Tragedy played crucial roles

Below is some links to CSIRO research into vehicle burnovers (You've probably already seen it). While no vehicles were fitted with radiant heat curtains, Toxic Gases were a greater concern than thermal limits.

A command vehicle fitted with Burnover Curtains is only marginally safer than a standard vehicle. I think "Safety First" is a better option.

Personally I think fitting Burnover Curtains to command cars is pointless. It gives the occupants a false sense of security.

Just a word of warning. The "Halo" and other protective spray systems are only designed for fires less than 10MW/M (FDI 40, 20 Tonnes/Hectare). During Black Saturday the FDI was 100-300 and the fuels loads were 40+ Tonnes in places. Any tanker (Halo eqipped, Fire King etc) could not survive these conditions.
