Country Fire Service / Re: Life membership and other awards
« on: February 23, 2011, 07:37:58 PM »
Well thats cleared a bit of that up, thought it would be of the CFS, bit unfair on those that have to move etc.  As for not enough staff, how were all the 10, 20, 30 year medals done.
As I understand it the National medal is awarded after 15 years diligent service, it concerns me that it then gets left to a couple of volunteers in a brigade to grant it.  Surely there is a way this can be flagged on TAS some how at least.  We are always looking at why we can't keep members and awards are a good way of recognising their committment.
I do have to admit my interest here, I was awarded the national medal last year after 23 years active service.  I really don't want to see other having to wait so long.

Cheers

Country Fire Service / Life membership and other awards
« on: February 22, 2011, 10:30:12 PM »
The other evening a couple of our members were discussing life membership and what qualifies you for this.  The big discrepancy seemed to be, who you get life membership of.  Is it the brigade or is it the Country Fire Service.
Whilst on this topic why does it still fall to the brigades to nominate people for the National medal, considering we now have TAS can't that be an automatic thing.
Would be very interested on other peoples thoughts about this and a direction to written proof for the first one if that exists.

Cheers

Country Fire Service / Re: SFEC - Training
« on: February 14, 2011, 11:27:51 PM »
The big beef I have with the SFEC's is first aid.  I believe every member of the CFS should be trained in this, stuff the SFEC.  We regularly enter Hazardous situations and the very real potention is that we may go in without a first aider.  How many work sites would allow this.  These courses are not that expensive, and considering the service we provide to the community and the money we save the government, its about time it was funded fully.

29-11-10 19:27:12 LYNDOCH 24 TO REMAIN ON SCENE TONIGHT FOLLOWING AN OPERATIONAL INCIDENT. TO BE RECOVERED TOMORROW MORNING 0900. MEMBERS RETURNED SAFE. ********* *********** - CFS Barossa Officers Info

Anyone know what happened? Hope it was nothing too serious, glad to see the crew were returned safe.
Have got a lot more of the story now.
2 trucks were working a flank down a hill towards a fire track they could see from the top.  What they couldn't see was the 1 metre vertical drop from the paddock onto the track.
They attempted to turn the trucks and drive across the slope to a point where access could be obtained, however the slope turned out to be greater than anticipated and the decision was made to abandon the trucks (and avoid a rollover) until extra help could be obtained.
That came in the form of a tractor this morning, so as they say in the fairy tails they all lived happily ever after, except the drivers who will cop a ribbing for a long time yet.

Haven't had a chance to catch up with anyone who attended as yet, but believe they got themselves into a spot of bother on a very steep slope, don't know if they were pointing down hill or sideways.  The only comment I have heard is don't sneeze in the area.  Also they were not alone (thats all I'll say on that)

All Equipment discussion / New CFS Village Pumper
« on: November 05, 2010, 05:57:18 AM »
Off topic slightly, has anyone heard of a 'village pumper'.  What is it how big etc.  At our last group meeting we were led to believe Birdwood would be getting one sometime in the next 18 mths.
On other news Barossa group is finally getting a tanker, 13000 litre at that, in the next couple of weeks.  It's been a good year out here for new vehicles. :-D

A link to the story on Adelaide now confirming his move.  It is a sad day to see him go, a well respected leader, his shoes will be difficult to fill.
Always enjoyed the look on new firies faces after they were told who he was, after shaking his hand whilst at a staging area or similar of a large fire.
Thanks Euan, best of luck in Victoria.

« on: April 03, 2010, 11:10:01 PM »
I would like to add another question here too regarding stop calls.  I am of the understanding from recent discussions in our group that, if you receive a stop call therefore not arriving at an incident, you did not attend this incident as far as the records go.  This would have a roll on effect towards both your SFC and general funding.  Does someone know if this is correct.

As for an answer on the original question Baxter posed it is my understanding that roll falls on the OIC, but I have seen it ignored, miss heard and overturned

Cheers and safe Easter to all

What would they do here seeing that it is fairly large fire they are attending and they only have one truck?

lyndoch still had 34P being crewed up for a response to gawler so maybe they would have sent them inplace of concordia as the fire was a higher priority
Lyndoch 34p were being sent for asset protection.
It would appear it didn't get seen to yesterday, otherwise there would be no need for this page.

True about the extra coverage, Williamstown did a COQ to Tanunda CFS. Shortly after Tanunda trucks getting home they had a fully involved shed fire that all 3 attended.

Thanks for the link to that Darius, it is quite a good survey, can only hope it gets some good answers. Mind you it does take some politicians into new areas eg a straight forward yes or no answer without the spin
Well done to Wendy and the CFSVA

Heard Wendy from the CFSVA on 891 the other morning, discussing things such as lack of funding over all, inadequate money for training and lack of staff to do this, and a general feeling that the cfs volunteers are not being looked after properly.  They have also sent out a survey to all politicians addressing the many issues faced by the cfs.  Would love to see that and would love even more to see some of the answers assuming they don't just get filed in the basket next to the desk.

About 10 mins later the emergency services minister was on the radio telling us all how much extra the govt has spent on the emergency services, such as the big budget for aireal support, the 1m extra for appliances etc, but don't remember him actually address the training issue or staffing levels.

Would be interested to hear if anyone else heard this and has more details.

Cheers David

I think there will definately be the need for an additional station plus 2 units at the current Gawler station.  This plan goes side by side with a development that Delfin have for the north east of Gawler, from the Gawler - One Tree Hill Rd across to Kalbeeba.
Alternatively I'm sure Concordia wouldn't say no to a pumper :-D (they may need a bigger station thou), with all the people moving in recuiting shouldn't be a hassle either.

Now I know this isn't a pager message, it was taken from the 'AdelaideNow' site, but I didn't want to start a new thread just for this;

"Queensland Fire and Rescue Service director of rural operations Tony Adcock said about 500 firefighters, 80 per cent of whom were volunteers, were currently battling 50 fires across the state.
"We're getting to the point where firefighters are getting very tired and have used up their available time," he said."

Surely he's got the figures wrong, thats only 10 firies per fire, we send more to a car fire half the time :?

Another qualification that won't hurt is in the area of Volunteer management, and to get into DEH other than as a seasonal firie you'll need a degree in Natural resources or similar, available through TAFE at Urbrae.
Good Luck you'll need it.

There was a BRT (sorry didn't see the number, it was getting dark and I was more focussed on getting coffee  :-D) at the staging area when we arrived at 8pm ish at One Tree Hill.
Didn't see it on the fire ground but would assume it wasn't just doing a spot of sight seeing.  There were a couple of houses out near the main road that did have asset protection applied to them, so they were possible there.
