The value of people having a rant/spit is two fold ,it lets the person vent and god knows we all need to do that sometimes, but it also opens up our own perfect little worlds to criticism, you certainly don't have to agree with it! but it might just make you reflect on the way you do business and possibly find a better way .

Perhaps one of the things some officers GO/DGOs, CAPTAIN/LEIUTENANTs dont do well is to delegate some of their workload onto other junior officers thereby lessening their burden but also to expose/mentor possible replacements.
Succession planning needs to be a greater focus of a majority? of brigades and units.
Also it appears to me some officers that keep learned knowledge close to their chests in an attempt to hold onto their power base, actually might be doing the reverse, when their close guarding of this information comes out.
Still like to hear from people what has worked well in their organisations-regular changing of leaders or dynasties.

One of the things you see posted regularly is the reference to Captains/DGOs/GOs being cemented in a dynasty in those positions.
Does this give our services the scope for change ? Would a maximum term of office be beneficial or would stability of long term dynasty leadership be better.
Brigades and organisations that have fairly regular change at the top either through succession planned change or other means, do they fair better than dynasty style organisations? I realise they are fairly open ended questions as it will very much depend on the individual leaders and suitable replacements.

Your thoughts?

Yep agree with the posts so far. Another thing that we (CFS) as a service are starting to see, are more leadership courses coming on line,should these courses be "pushed" towards potential leaders to try to fill the void, before some of these seemingly overwhelming positions are taken on.

at the end of the day - we can all agree to disagree - obviously us SAASites don't see the same issues you lot see, but again - it's all a matter of relevance and relativity!

and lets face it, we're all subject to the same Bovine Faeces which management throw around when we do things which involve spending more money than we should just to provide a service to the community!

Boredy, your Bovine Faeces and managements hissy fits statement, will be struggling to find a dissenting voice amongst this lot, apart from the paid staff and ministers people.
And yes my slant on things may be different to yours,and thats okay, but we are both doing our jobs to the best of our abilities ,in a system that sometimes throws up roadblocks for us all.(hug)

Hi everyone,as I read members posts it would be great to have an indication as to their service affiliation eg Jaff CFS or Chook SES, whether that is achieveable or maybe just a letter after the name C for CFS ,M for Mets and so on this might help get a quicker understanding of where their views are coming from or possibly coloured.

Faux Pas,hopefully there is common ground amongst all of us --the want for the best possible emergency services-- how we achieve that is debateable, but looking closely at our performances and being open about our shortcomings and accepting constructive criticism will surely help ALL of the services to better their service delivery.
Some may look through these threads and look at them as just plain "service bashings",but I believe that they highlight possible deficancies and that may be hard to accept if your agency is the one highlighted, but we as 1st responders should always be trying to better ourselves and peer evaluation is usefull.
Indisputable history shows none of us can take the moral high ground.

Well Jono ,were waiting -------,maybe some footage, as you drag a hapless victim to safety from a fully involved structure or maybe knockdown of a raging firefront or a stop call because the paid staff got there first, whatever wheres the footage !!
