RescueHazmat, I have been to one or two going jobs over the years thanks for caring and asking!As I read the thread it had turned to a "protracted" rescue of personel trapped/pinned in an urban rescue environment,not every incident turns into hosing off the house slab and making a carpark,also there was a hint of humour intended with my last post,sorry you missed it!

Seems like everyone agrees that mud maps are notoriously unreliable,what we need is something that is totally devoid of emotions to just record the facts, JONO'S helmet camera----just a thought.

SA Firefighter General / volunteers our own sports team theory!!

A theory that I've had for many years,is that most emergency service volunteers are not generally sporting types, and that our voluntary organisations fill the sensation of that camaraderie that is generally associated with sporting clubs.

I know that in some of our remoter locations this will generally not be the case with an entire community fulfilling all of the sporting and volunteering roles ,but in the closer rural/urban and urban brigades ,I'm just wondering if my "non sporting camaraderie " theory holds water .....awaiting all of your learned responses.

Heard of a interesting discussion with David Place at one of SAFECOMS presentations one evening ,he is aware that other services feel that there is a problem with SAAS dispatch of complimentary services but its a "procedural issue"ie operators working their way through set procedures ,patient details  and the like.

One of the SAAS CRD personnel that was present was summoned to give the good oil on the situation ,NO WAY was there a institutionalised problem the discussed incidents were anomolies,after much talk it was agreed that a SAAS "issues register", to track any, if at all of these suppossed problems might be the way to go, that way they could be documented and actioned IF it proves to be the case, hopefully this might see the light of day.

In saying this ,might a "issues register" for every agency be appropriate?????
Lets hope we can all sit back and look it for what it is ,emergency service organisations taking constructive critism ,that will cause our respective agencies to look at their SOPS to see if they could be improved,before it goes to far and somebody ends up crying, funding not withstanding.

big bronto theres probably a reason its been bashed so many times,not only are volunteers pissed off that the CRD was rushed through without the appropriate procedures in place meaning that they had to be "developed on the run in an adhoc manner",these are the words of one of your comms operators.
 
Also if im reading these posts and the issue registers properly the sops that have been implemented and accepted by both services are seemingly, regularly not adheered too, causing angst and frustration amongst the troops.

CFS doesnt have a UFU style union but if we did ,no way would we put up with the crap we are regularly dealt,would MFS put up with it ? no frigging way!
The last couple of days could just be a taste of whats to come, with the coming fire season, and we would like to know that things were well under way to being resolved,well theres still obviously some issues that need to be dealt with!!

I agree that our comms are a not as proficent as they possibly could be,and in house that is something that we have been put on notice about and will continue to try to improve,but it will take time as most brigades train weekly for only a couple of hours,so perhaps excuse us if we look upon operators that practice 40 hrs plus a week and continue to make simple errors with exasperation.

You may look upon the critisism levelled at the CRD as an insult to your "professionialism" ,I just see it as a threat to the safety of myself and other crews whilst on the fireground and I would be remiss in my duty if I didnt complain loud and clear!!!! so endeth the sermon.

What is wrong with you people?  The pod system absolutely work's and has been around for at least 30 years & i've lost count of the amount of live's it saves as it arrives on the scene with just seconds to spare!!!!
Now if I can just remember was it thunderbird 1 or 4 and was it Allan or virgil at the controls.
Hope it has that excellent thunderbirds theme music blasting out over the PA system as they upload the pod before the mandatory 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 blast off .AAh yes are tax dollars hard at work!

It sounds like the operators at AF are constantly under the pump with multiple channels to monitor and answer, 000 calls to answer and despatch the relevant services too.
As professional's, I'm sure the operator's are expected to constantly monitor their service delivery and if there are any problem's actual or anticipated notify their superior's to either rectify the problem or put a procedure in place, to deal with the anticipated, if it occur's.

As a volie who has had a problem with AF not responding additional resource's when requested ,(yes problem will be identified on the issue's register)thankfully it did'nt alter the outcome of the incident,but it did give me cause for concern, as this was a reasonably mild day, friday 16th november,what might the outcome have been if it had been in two month's time and the bomber's had already been deployed elsewhere?

So my question's are these, are some of the teething problem's were experiencing related to the inadeqate number of comms ops at AF, who seem to have have an ever increasing work load? or the speed with which the changeover to AF CRD occured despite a risk assesment, which amongst other thing's I hear cautioned against a hasty changeover without all of the procedure's being already in place, as opposed to, policy on the run which ultimately occured.

Please don't take my comment's as a critisism of the comm's ops, who im sure are doing the best job they can under the circumstance's,beside's all of us are still learning to play by the new rules!

couple of weeks back, while wandering around town following the wife and kids from store to store,should mention at this stage i was wearing one of the brigade fire and rescue "t shirts" saw someone else wearing a cfs "t shirt" we caught each others eye,both of us just nodded and smiled.
aah the brotherhood,nothing needs to be said,you wouldnt miss it for quids!

    you sound like a very intraspective person,but i guess that is no suprise because your head is surely stuck somewhere.
as for your comments to pip about not having all the facts before stating anything ie"fiddling" in your diatribe you ask two questions which clearly infers YOU dont have all the answers and then state its proof that shes empire building,not concerned with protecting the community,her priorities are backwards and shes transparent.
you obviously dont know her or you would be using CARMELS private line to call her and apologise.

There don't seem to be too many incidents where Duty Officers Must attend (although in many situations, they don't need to, but they do..which I think occurs way too often..but that is another topic !)

While generally GDO are Group Officers / Deputy group Officers, there are also others...surely succession planning should come into things...?

Again, those taking on the role of GDO should be doing it, knowing full well what the responsibilities are....if they aren't happy with the taking on that responsibility, then they don't take on the role!![/color         


the attendance or non attendance of the duty officer is usually triggered by certain perameters set by the groups SOPS to assume control.but that being said their actual attendance if outside of these perameters should be in a support role.
whether it be using the group/command vehicle in a fend off position for an MVA , as a driver for the incident controller,the run around guy for supplies or whatever the crew needs,in short the GDO ,DGO,s & GO,s should there to assist the crews not to micro-manage everything,if they do always assume control sort it out at group sooner rather than later.
as far as the GDO being either the DGO or GO your right it doesnt have to be them, but it surely needs to be someone that has the experience for the role ,the confidence of the group and immediate access to a command vehicle.
the succession planning of groups should be something that is well underway and anyone interested in taking on a brigade or group position (pumprescue)should let it be known,instead of just sniping at people that had the guts/time/commitment to have a go.

i agree that we need to have a course for comms operators,that would certainly do the job in the long run ,in the interim period though? the group duty officer taking coms until a station or group base opens up is the quick fix.
another solution im hearing is for radio ops from adjoining brigades taking coms (an internal coms brigade sorta)just see how that pans out

the role of the duty officer taking coms was only envisaged for the time period between the initial page and a station or a group base coming up on air,the responding appliances would still be contacting ADELAIDE FIRE on a yet to be announced channel so that they could still be tracked by CRIMSON before being put on their primary talk group.
while this might be onerous on some groups it still is the easiest (read least changes compared to some of the suggestions put forward)way to handle the transitional period whilst still maintaning a monitoring overwatch,instead of having ADELAIDE FIRE asking you to "hold out"whilst they deal with another channel that you cant hear,or worse still another incident on the same channel

pumprescue you sound like,you have it all sorted out,maybe next AGM you should stand as a G.O or a D.G.O. after 15 years in the service you should be cherry ripe for the job,yeh I bet you`d sort it tiger!
