Its all about the little details. It may seem hard that they are knocking people off for those reasons, but as RescueHazmat said, it's not difficult to cross the T's and dot the I's.

And burnt hose is caused by... Operator error

I didn't think the discussion was about percolating/non-percolating hose. I swear it was Canvas/Duraline. Not all canvas hose is percolating. These days though, what appears to be canvas hose can also be made of nylon or other fibres.

Not really. Its exactly the same as using the 25mm canvas, just the 25 tends to get dirtier. Unless you have a particularly dirty job they don't really need cleaning, even when they do its maybe 5-10 minutes depending on how much hose you have. Hanging them up the hose tower is fine, but can be a pain in the arse in winter.

I would easily take 70mm canvas over the Duraline. I find the canvas far easier to use, more flexible, less slippery when wet and it rolls far better than duraline in my experience

In terms of firefighting tech, SA has some great stuff, but is lacking in other areas. NSW is still 'trialling' MDT's - Go figure. If there was more caring and sharing between fire services Australia wide, we would certainly see vast improvements in firefighting technology overall.

Did they take their 24?

Most of my equipment, apart from my basic PPE, is self purchased.

Hello tax deductions!

I have posted as both Toast and 2090 in the past... the very very distant past that is!

Our 3 chain and 2 electric have served us well in the past. I don't see any need for us to upgrade to anything else. We set things up so in the event of a malfunction we can still respond.

Its obvious you have to turn out appliances for alarms calls. I have been there when AFA's turn into a VERY big job. The outcome would have been no different having two or twenty two appliances on scene to begin with.

If you look at the number of AFA's that are really jobs, that may not support the over resourcing of AFA calls.

I've only used the automatic TFT branches and I hate them with a passion. I'm an Akron man through and though.

Someone in our brigade did order us some other brand of branch. Can't for the life of me think what they were now. But they also fell into the terrible basket.

We are all entitled to our own opinions. Who cares what service we are a part of, or where abouts in that service we stand. Its sad that things people say on these boards can and will be taken and acted upon in the real world.

How can we encourage free speech and discussion when you have people effectively telling others to shut their mouths.

I'm not too keen on the Personal Line. We don't use them at all in NSW. An easier and more versatile solution would be to issue a 3-5M piece of rope to each BA op. That way you can do more than just search with it.

Country Fire Service / Re: new dress uniform
« on: March 13, 2008, 02:26:31 PM »
CFS need a good dress uniform, the Khaki is a bit too old and drab for my liking!
The idea of rentable sets sounds really good. There havee been a number of times where it would have been good to have a Dress Uniform, but they are a little hard to come by when you are not a brigade captain.

The other thing CFS could think about is a Duty Uniform. It wouldn't be as formal as the Dress uniform, so it would be good for brigade PR functions, as well as being useful for Rescue and Bushfire jobs.

Thats really good for PR.

The fire truck is unsafe for you to climb on, but we are meant to respond to emergencies with it.

Three big cheers for CFS.

I'm used to seeing two pumps turnout to just about everything. I look at some of the SAMFS responses of truck after truck to an alarm and my jaw drops.

It just seems crazy to empty stations and leave areas unprotected simply because of an AFA. Even the working jobs that you see are packed full of trucks. The Leabrook job the other day for example, had both brontos out... but for what exactly?

SA Firefighter General / Re: Guidelines or Procedures?
« on: March 13, 2008, 02:09:24 PM »
I'll get into the "Guidlines" camp. I totally agree with Numbers regarding firefighting being a fluid and ever changing beast. Its very hard to have a checklist to follow in order every single time.

This was a great idea. The problem this site used to have was that too many people would be posting anonymously and the dribble that was around here was just abhorrent.

Three cheers for the so-called 'revolution'!

Well that is just lovely. I thought that had been forgotten about long ago. Thank my mother and father for that terrible article.  :|

(You're right about the 'Tool' part though)

I think the most important tool on the truck would have to be the hoses and branches. Its impossible to do what we do without them. They also have their uses in other places like rescue.

Hi all!

I have been a long time reader of this site and posted while it was in its infancy. Things have certainly changed! Hopefully we can keep the site full of information and not full of scheiße. Back to the way that it used to be.

Anyway, more about me:
I'm Gabe, I've been a member of Stirling CFS for about 6 years. Packed up and moved interstate with the missus early last year after joining the NSWFB.

I'm working at 001 - City of Sydney station at the moment. Contrary to popular belief we spend more time working than watching foxtel! :D

Cheers!
