the lack of chainsaw stowage is definitely a defect (and that the brigade that receives the appliance has to correct that at their own expense is just wrong). Regardless of what HQ might think, a chainsaw is essential for rural (and probably even urban) brigades. Don't MFS trucks even carry a chainsaw?

start with contacting your group officer(s) as it was sent to them

I think the proposal adds too many membership categories and overcomplicates it. I think all we need is one extra category to what we have now which is effectively the same as Operational Support but does not confer any voting rights (to solve the quorum problem). I understand where the 'restricted firefighter' category comes from but as yet remain unconvinced that it's something the CFS should be pursuing.

Regarding the position descriptions, really just a write-up of the dot points from the act and regs, but probably good to have in this format.

wonder if it really was a pagoda (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagoda for what they look like) or if they meant a pergola.

just making it clear it's not the paging system being too slow (as you said) but the work practice(s) the SES choose to use.

just got one thing to say (as badjas said it's all been said before, it's a pity such a stuffed system takes so long to get sorted but that's what you get when people play empire building and politics) and that's the paging system can handle a lot more than it did over the last day or so.  OldOne you said "its too slow to handle hundreds of jobs per hour", I would suggest one page every 10 secs is 360 per hour, which is easily achievable. I would hope one page per second (3600/hr) is achievable (the bitrate is 1600 so 200 chars/sec theoretically should be).

(and are we sure that it was actually a job?)

yes, they were spot on with bearing and only slightly out with distance. The fire was off Mt Bold Rd (in SA Water land) rather than Gurr Rd. Was pretty small so a good 'catch' of something that had a bit of potential.

Indeed.  As you say they do often get paged but haven't seen any specific job details via pager that I can recall, an example page is something like "Cat B - Heli + blood - GRN when mobile".

ok thanks I understand now, seems an odd setup, but as we're unlikely to get a new appliance anytime in the forseeable future it will all have changed by then I'm sure.

Why would you use the tank fill in any other situation than to fill the tank when going to and from a fire ground, should never be used for stationary pumping, there is no way to control the in coming flow, unless you go to the hydrant and turn it off.

If your pulled up and working at a job go through the inlets.

Not that hard is it ?

maybe I'm misunderstanding here but why can't you just partially shut off the valve on the tank inlet to control the flow of incoming water?  not sure what the big deal is...

in my brigade we usually use this way rather than pump inlet, but i'm talking rural 24, not a pumper, and no hydrants/mains.  Effectively we always use the tank then hook in another appliance / tanker / drafting line to keep the tank filled up.  This ensures a continuous flow of water to the branch, as it's using the tank as a 'buffer', when the incoming water stops eg. cos the 2nd appliance is now empty or have to reposition the drafting line etc.  It also means you get water on the fire immediately while the second crew/truck/person can setup ready for more water. The pump operator adjusts the valve to 'balance' the outgoing and incoming water.

I did say, that they should be getting their research from the field (that means them the paid types doing the leg work, not us) and then presenting us with solutions, again, based on their research. There are numerous examples around of single person Executives reporting to Boards, no different to that.

sounds just like what Wendy does (from what I've seen anyway). But this 'getting their research from the field' part you mention above means they need input from all of us, or those of us that want their opinions taken into account anyway.

Country Fire Service / Re: Short 1.8 million in training?
« on: November 19, 2010, 07:52:31 AM »
I realise you're cynical about the CFSVA Mr T but the reality is that the govt does not take any notice of anything the staff, including the chief, have to say about lack of funding and so it's up to us, the volunteers, to do something about it, and using the CFSVA is the best way to do that.  The CFSVA already have lines of communication open with the minister and we would be foolish not to use that.

The $1.8M being pushed for at the moment for specific training 'gaps' is step 1 (and yes Mr Numbers it's a drop in the ocean of what is needed but you have to start somewhere).  Step 2 is being planned now (so I gather).

After the Vic bushfire the Vic govt pumped more money into the CFA, and just the other day I read the NSW govt announced an increase of $117M in funding for the RFS.  If we don't get behind the CFSVA to help us get funded properly then, as already mentioned, the only way it will happen is when people start dying through lack of training or lack of equipment etc.

There is a simple lack of willpower high up to fix endemic problems (eg. regular 15-30 minute, or more, delays in rescue resources being responded to car crashes, a problem that has been reported for years now).

We have fire trucks (the 06/07 hinos?) that conk out on the fireground because the air intake is mounted behind the front wheel so gets blocked up instead of having a snorkel up to the roof level. Or trucks (the isuzus) that lock themselves when no one is in them with the engine running. Or trucks that come with insufficent lockers to hold standard essential equipment. These are clearly not fit for purpose yet they were delivered to brigades like this and HQ says there is no money to fix these things.

So we can make snide little remarks about the CFSVA on a web forum, or gripe about lack of training courses, bicker amongst ourselves, or just whinge about things.  Or we can help the CFSVA to help all of us and get a bit vocal and militant and try to improve things.

Vitacom program them (81324444) but if pagers don't work then the alpha might not too. Do you have mobile phone coverage? simple solution is get yourself setup to get pages via SMS as well.

The CFS standard UHF CB channels are 9, 19, 29 (in that order of preference) unless an existing local arrangement is in place.

Euan sent this email out yesterday afternoon:

Subject:    RESIGNATION AS CFS CHIEF OFFICER
Date:    Thu, 30 Sep 2010 17:25:29 +0930
From:    Ferguson, Euan (CFS) <[email protected]>

Dear friends and colleagues,

After much discussion, deep thought and deliberation, I have tendered my resignation as Chief Officer of the SA Country Fire Service.  I have accepted an offer to be the next Chief Officer of the Country Fire Authority in Victoria.

My last day with CFS will be 12 November.  I start at CFA on 15 November.  In the mean time, we will continue to work together to prepare for the next fire season and to build a firm foundation for a new CFS Chief Officer to take over the reigns.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Regards, Euan

Euan Ferguson AFSM
Chief Officer
SA Country Fire Service

SA Firefighter General / Re: Interesting Fire and Emergency Related Paging
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:59:55 AM »
I saw it on my private scanner, but there is one online scanner that shows all adresses, not sure if the person wants it public though as its password protected. I guess it is a paging adress that has been removed from the commonly used decoder.

it's an MFS individual's pager, could be a fire cause investigator maybe

cant help having no pumps on the page if their aren't any to go other then one

actually burnside pumper were responded too (by radio/phone).

I wonder if the "good" turnout page was in any way influenced by the group officer being present in Adelaide Fire at the time the call was received (cos I bet the BOMS data is not correct).

I heard Auburn and Williamstown come up on GRN 124 responding to or asking for pages to be sent out! Why was this? was region 2 running through region 1 talkgroup? just curious is all  :-)

R1 Ops 124 and R2 Ops 093 were patched together by Adelaide Fire. SAAS do it all the time but in reverse, ie. when it's quiet they patch their north and south talkgroups together so one operator can easily do both, when things get busy they unpatch and put one operator on each talkgroup.

...I think the SES in this state need to invest in new systems to deal with days like we have had of late....

Darren, I makes me worried if you do not know of the changes happening at MFS ComCen (I thought that was your workplace). Two things holding the changeover and everything else is installed, tested & waiting to go. Affected SES volunteers were officially told three months ago.

is it secret?  why don't you just say what you've been told?
(I can only assume you are referring to the SES SCC ceasing to do CRD? and long past time too in my opinion, the problem is Adelaide Fire can't handle what they do now let alone giving them more to do)

SASES / Re: Again response protocol not followed!!!!

Any life threat calls received by SES SCC, the caller is requested to call 000. We do not take the call.

ha good one.  But of more interest to me is all the problems with Adelaide Fire over the weekend.  Once again we had phone calls to them ringing out, big delays answering the radio, refusal to respond brigades, hanging up on 000 callers and brigades / group officers etc.  I know they're busy but why is AF management continually unable to staff the comcen appropriately?  after all it's not like everyone didn't have enough warning.  Once again if it wasn't for groups and brigades managing everything themselves, and papering over the cracks, it would have been far worse.  Can't wait til summer when it gets serious.

And Bill they work fine in my brigade station (tin shed) where mobile phones die about 6 feet inside the doors.

IF the much talked about CAD ever gets here, it will finally make brigades accountable, you can no longer just say jim bob in the ute will check it out. We might actually be able to live up the FIRE SERVICE part of the CFS.

The way things are done now is a joke !

HOW..... I doubt that every emergency vehicle will get data terminal buttons to register the specific vehicle is responding...the cost would be huge...the acknowledgement will still be by phone or radio as it is now. If this is true, then it is still up to the reponding Brigade or Unit to ensure the correct vehicles are responded to the incident.

Nothing changes..Please correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions.

Resources are turned out, not Brigades. Like SAMFS now, Stations don't get turned out, resources do.

indeed but how will that change 'accountability'?  From a brigade point of view not much changes with SACAD, what's to stop a member of the brigade 'responding' in their own car and putting a stop?  nothing that I can see.  In fact in country areas, why does it matter anyway?  that person is providing early 'intel'.

And even before the page comes out, in some cases group officers will still get Alerts calls and be able to decide that no response at all is necessary.
