Agreed - would be great for our appliances - and so what if it broadcasts to people in their homes - its a reminder that we are out, serving our community in their time of need

4 to 6 minutes might be alright for some brigades but an average turnout time where i live is 8-12mins.  And there is nothing we can do about it.  Its just the fact that our crews have to travel so far to the station.

Thats it in a nut shell - we all provide the same service to the community - fire response, just some communities, due to size, geographics and population spread take a little longer to get on the road - and their community accepts that :-D

Sorry still disagree with the automatic after 15 years!

What world are you people living in?????

CFS once stated 18500 fire fighters - with a guess of about 10000 active - that equates to 21 active members per brigade - what a load of steaming cow poo!!!!

Many, many brigades have people on their books, as active who they would be lucky to see once a year - why do these people deserve a national medal - they don't, they haven't displayed diligent service, they haven't provided back to the community when the comunity has put in ($$$ for training, equipment, PPE)

I stand (maybe alone) by my convictions - the National medal should be earned, not a medal for every bugga like the volunteer medal was!

There is an orange/citrus based cleaner that will lift it - you can find it in the supermarker

Fund on membership (active) activity rate (training & response) and risk within community - allocate resources to match risk, then $$$ to crew those appliances (i.e. fund PPE, equipment - not necessarily wages!)

Yeh but how long to refill the aircraft & would we have enough water to fill it without drying the fire mains for a few kilometres around the airport.

Maybe it could be an interesting BWC - eg. all CFS trucks respond to airport to refill water....110,000 litres divided by 3000 litres per truck = 36 CFS truck refils.

From their info - they bring everthing with them - including floating collar dams, tankers, support infrastructure and alike - once unloaded they then inflate the storage tanks in the aircraft.

Takes them 20 mins to fill

Heres one to look at:
http://www.evergreenaviation.com/supertanker/whyst.html

Apparently they can drop from between 400 and 800 feet (thats between 120 and 250 mtrs) and carry 24000 gallons (or approximately 110,000 litres) - from their web site the only airport they could use near adelaide would be Edinborough - BUT it would be interesting to see!

Ahhhhh...... bring back Robert Brokenshire and the Emergency Service Grants ......... at least we had some idea who we were up against and it was money from the ESL focused back to the community :-D

Country Fire Service / Re: Delays between MFS calling out CFS
« on: October 13, 2006, 09:37:14 AM »

You guys should all know better... the agreement between MFS and CFS is, and has been for a long long time, that CFS do not respond to Fire Alarms or Private Alarms in MFS area, except where Mutual Aid (as opposed to Enhanced MA) is under effect, unless local agreements state otherwise. This is not a "waa waa we didn't get called" situation. Build a bridge.
[/quote]
True rusty - but the grass is always green on the other side!

Imagine your union and the general comment by crews on station, if a CFS brigade adjacent to the urban fringe took that time to respond to a fixed alarm - and didn't call an MFS station 3 km away!

It's all about service to the community and this goes to show - no one is perfect, despite what they may think!

« on: October 13, 2006, 09:32:59 AM »
Guess someones a little concerned that with the weather - crews leaving areas for the comps may be an issue!

Although in the words of Howard MacBeth several years ago when asked is SA was under threat due to fire fighters going out of area - 'If we asked for another 1000 fire fighters to go to NSW, we would get them'

Hypotheticals / Re: South Australian Fire & Rescue Service
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:34:34 PM »
I say bring it on,ses have 1500 members and some of there units have very bad crewing problems in small towns as do the CFS or MFS or SAAS

Blinky .... it's quality not quantity that counts.

However ALL services, regardless of their size have issues with volunteer crewing, there are examples across the state in all services where some town have better member ship in one service than another.

The key issue is community service - what suits the community and will maintain membership and a suitable level of service

It appears from todays fires that the helitankers are back.

If past years are anything to go on - for the primary Mt Lofty response zone there will be AirTractor 802's or similar with 3000ltr water capacity with the capability of on board foam induction and computer controlled release doors.

Historically the SE has had slightly different, as Forestry has a bomber on their contract and I also believe one may be heading to the West Coast, for the peak season.

Haven't heard [/i]officially[/i] when the contract starts or exactly what is in it!

Could well have been... He said professional fire-fighter from Melbourne, so I assumed MFB... I guess he could have been from anywhere though....
Professional fire fighter - that is CFA, CFS etc - professionalism IS NOT A RATE OF PAY!!!!!!!!!!

and

Yes it's a repeat, the devises have been on display at several conferences and are similar to what is now being used overseas - maybe they stole the idea or the PROFESSIONAL CFA member has found an international market!

Country Fire Service / Re: Future Appliances
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:21:07 PM »
I think the Forestry SA Fire Kings would make real good future CFS Appliances but we would have to paint them white
Bugga that - id prefer to drive a tank up the road before I drove one of them onto a fire ground - actually I would like to drive a tank ...... and I have already driven a fire king - nice for inside the forest (less than .1% of our work) so no good to CFS

Country Fire Service / Re: Apathy for Volunteers

They can only print the fact given - obvious some CFS crews/people have been to the media with issues - interesting though the coments and attitude of SHQ, I doubt that they were miss prints, rather factual quotes!

SA Firefighter General / Re: ses road crash
« on: October 11, 2006, 03:15:34 PM »
Question answered then - both CFS and SES train to the National course - however for those of you who don't understand the back ground to National Competencies - each provider can add 'modules' above and beyond the minimum requirement to meet their outcomes and as with any National training, the course will vary because different people write them - the BASICS and OUTCOMES though remain the same minimum standards

Now - when will MFS extract the digit and follow the lead of the Volunteer services and meet National standards?????????

No ..... none of us would, thats why the NSWRFS is taking over!

Well they are trying to take over the ACT so why not us two????

Serously - Pete, maybe one day we will see a unified SA Fire and Rescue Service, but I don't think it will happen in my life time!

Agreed Pete - no service should worry about people cutting their lunch, after all - been outside Wakefield street during lunch time .... not 30 seconds thats for sure.

People get too worked up over 'time out the door', regardless if volunteer, part timer or career tthere are always things that will alter your response times
