All Equipment discussion / Re: Do we need Scanias ??
« on: September 22, 2005, 01:16:48 PM »
I didn't mean m.f.s when i said scania's are 310 horsepower, i know m.f.s have 260 hp scania's but the question is "do we need scania's" not "do we need m.f.s scania's", scania now doesn't make 260 hp cab chassis only 310 hp from now on from what i have been told. Hence the CFA and MFB mark 5's are 310 hp.

I am also only talking about c.f.s needing maybe 2 or 3 of this heavy style pumper in the whole fleet. These appliences would go to a busy high risk brigade but would probably want to be placed north, south and central (to the hill's go) and be a state support appliance. Maybe 1 in the barrossa and 1 in th south east.

CFA run 2 BA seats in the back of thier scania's and a bench seat between them which can fit another 2 people on it so you can have six crew. Maybe belair has gotten too used to carrying 25 people on the back.

I guess the other thing is why get something different to m.f.s if we don't have to, it would be good to be able to walk up to an m.f.s truck and everything is in the same place as on our truck's.

The big issue is that it really isn't a huge cost difference between a scania and an isuzu when you look at what you get for your money.

E.G to put an auto gear box in an isuzu it is another $30,000 which almost makes up the difference in cab chassis prices.

On top of that - you can't fit B.A seats in an isuzu.
               - scanias can run a 1000 gpm pump easier, (you can get
a type 2 on a scania cab chassis with a 1000 gpm pump)
               - isuzu's are 220 hp and scanias are 310 hp
               - dont know if youve ever been in a scania but they fit
6 big dudes in much easier
               - the brakeing and suspension is set up for going fast
                 and stopping even faster

It's not just scania's there are many more cab chassis that are as good and some are alot cheaper, eg. mack, mercedes, frieghtliner, dennis etc etc.

I think that C.F.S should look at the type 2 on a scania cab chassis as it wouldn't be a huge difference in cost and it would be ideal for our needs. C.F.S do own a scania now being mawson tanker so i don't know what they are scared of.

C.F.S probably allowed moores about 10 bucks to build this bracket so it figures.

Well not sure about the working party but region 1 now has a pumper commitee made up of brigades that are likely to a get new pumper but from what i've seen its just to make the volunteers think the paid staff are listening to them and i dont think it will achive much.

Yeah, for the cost of this appliance cfs need to just make 4 or 5 and give them to the brigades that need them.

That will stop 90% of the winging in cfs about appliances but i guess it would also take away 90% of arthur and sandys work so they won't want to do that.

Like most paid positions in cfs just keep on the same round about and no-one will question you, that way your job is justified and all is good. Theres less hastle from 17,000 volunteers than 1 paid staff boss so why please the volunteers.

Ah yes but from what i have heard the minister doesn't want 2 data bases in the state so therefore cfs may not have the capability's to do all areas.

Maybe Alex can shed some light on this.

Yes every street number needs to be on a fire report for insurance purposes. Not sure if you can put multiple numbers on 1 fire report, maybe something to look into.
eg. if an insurance company rings cfs about a job and cfs can't say whether they actually went to that particular house or not there could be some issues with pay outs etc.

« on: September 14, 2005, 02:38:51 PM »
Yeah we used to have rural helmets as well but we broke so many that we gave the rest to our cadets who love them.

Pity you cant use top guards anymore they were a great rural helmet.

« on: September 14, 2005, 02:33:29 PM »
Yes its a bit of a worry especially in groups that do alot of calls. Theres nothing in place from headquarters its just up to groups.
The trouble is technically no-one needs to care if a busy brigade had no trucks for hours and hours until there was another call.
One thing c.f.s never has done enough of is worry about other calls.

e.g jan 11 can you imagine if there was another fire in the mt lofty group. There should have been another group coming in from way out like coonalpyn or something to cover the adelaide hills.

These groups think they have special response methods with mfs but i dont see why they cant set this up with cfs. :?

Toast the problem the other guys are talking about is some groups don't want cfs paging them at all even if it comes via thier alerts.

SAMFS / Re: New Skyjet
« on: September 12, 2005, 01:34:40 PM »
I've been told they were gonna use scania's but they are too high for some of the bridges around adelaide, they would have had to cut a section out of the roof meaning the drivers B.A set would have had to be in a locker coz the seat would be too high in the cab (what a shame that would have been). Hopefully 205 or 206 don't go anywhere near these bridges

They used the old sticks off the old skyjets so i wonder if once these new ones are on the run they will pull the ones off the current 203, 243 and 703 to make more new one's?

Yes, it's still used. It came out of all the white powder incidents a few years ago. Instead of responding half the M.F.S they would respond a gp pump and a D.O to investigate.

Yes, even kangarilla gets responded differently for the tanker than the normal 34 or 24.

Incident Operations / Re: SAMFS Response Paging
« on: September 11, 2005, 10:14:45 PM »
Yes all the time. Even goes the other way, sometimes for domestic's or rescue's just over the border they will not put domestic in so that a C.F.S truck doesn't come, for example....

MFS: RESPOND TO (DATE/TIME)(ROAD)(LOCATION)(MAP) POSSIBLE HOUSE FIRE 201 203.

It just goes to show it isn't a fully automated system and there are ways around it.

We always get hazmat's as reduced responces from m.f.s.

Country Fire Service / Re: station numbers again
« on: September 11, 2005, 09:53:20 PM »
The biggest problem with the numbering is they have taken the old system and added to it and modified it.

Salisbury would have used to be 919  (station 91 pump rescue) for their 24p, 918 (station 91 rural appliance large) for their 34 and 9142 (station 91 tanker) for their tanker.

Now its a mixture of the station code and appliance code and doesn't really mean anything except a number in the data base for area and paging purposes. Technically now were supposed to called adelaide fire by our proper call signs eg. salisbury 24p.

So yeah, back to the 34, it is a nice rig, its about time C.F.S started building some practical (non plastic) appliances. Would be nice to test one of the new turbo isuzu's compared to the first non turbo isuzu's.

9119 should be your regular turnout code but 9124 and 9142 will be when you are requested specificly for your rural appliance or for your tanker.

Our group has justed made a policy that it is only to be worn to structure fires... :x

What's really funny is that we had a grass fire the other night and i wore my nomex and took my pbi with me but the pbi got dirtier from being pushed around the floor of the appliance than if i was wearing it. :?

Unfortunetly this may give M.F.S more fire power to move in because if you need two pumpers to cope with the town maybe you need a paid crew. Make sure you keep pushing your rural aspect or else you may end up with just a 24 and 14.......
