Please don't be offended by the fact that I was offended :-)

I did not take out this image - I am not sure how others would have judged this.

All I was doing was challenging the concept of calling intellectually or physically disabled persons "retarded". To me personally this is offensive.

I am not personally offended by either of the Jamaican jokes which were not racist, sexist or otherwise discriminatory as far as I can see.

Ironic, huh, the whole point was to suggest that arguing on the internet was pointless :-) LOL

I can actually go one better with your "nearly hit" story.

All our accidents are in 110km/hr zones on major highways and we have extreme problems with traffic slowing down. I have been called all the names under the sun when requesting (politely) people to adhere to the speed limit.

A young bloke on the recent October long weekend took the cake though. We responded to a "stand on your head" (ie: straightforward, easy job) single vehicle rollover on the dual lane highway between Tailem Bend and MB. One lane was blocked with traffic coming through the other. As usual people flew by in the open lane despite high visibility cones, flares, beacons, signs and cops. Twenty minutes after we arrived a passing vehicle rear ends the vehicle in front resulting in an entrapment!! Was quite arrogant too, said vehicle in front was going too slow. Cops took the wind of his sails a bit I think though :-)

As a side issue, Nomex isn't up to structure fire standards either... Your BA operators should be wearing PBI goldĀ  :|

Are you tounge in cheek? I thought the Nomex with level 3 liner was officially OK at this point in time??

Don't know how the information flows to vollies in your neck of the woods but we haven't even been advised of his appointment yet, so don't imagine we'll find out about his resignation officially any time soon!

Maybe he knows what's ahead??

If I'm on a lollypop I always keep the sign with the "STOP" showing until the very last moment, when the car is almost at a standstill before turning around to "SLOW" - works OK :-)

Thanks so much Andrew. Great to have you contribute both as an emergency services member and fire appliance manufacturer.

If you go the gallery section you'll find it makes setting up a gallery and uploading images from your local drives fairly painless.

Thanks guys, our 24P will have the "emergency services kit" fitted to it (whatever overrides the limiter when beacons are on)when it's returned to ISUZU for a service and to repair the non operational exhaust break. (Great, have to figure out how to get it there and back but anyhow).

In terms of people abusing this to detriment of safety - this just will not happen. Also people seem happy with the concept of an extra 20kms an hour. I'll be damned suprised (and I know she's got plenty of horsepower) if limited or not we get 130km/hr out of her.
And I hear ya Mundcfs, the way this girl wanders all over the road I wouldn't do 110 between Meningie and Ashville.

Well, if they don't have a problem with it they're not prepared to admit it here :-)

Now I don't want you to think that I am defending the practice (and in answer to your question, no, I wouldn't send an operator in without at least nomex jacket, pants and level 3 jacket liner) but really life is different out in the sticks.

I know of BA Brigades that do very minimal jobs who would be unlikely to know that level three turnout gear exists. And I know of another Brigade who merrily spent $20000 a year without bothering to strain the budget to properly attire their BA wearers.

This really is something I've always felt strongly about having entered Group Bases with thousands of dollars of electronic equipment while Brigades in their group are in overalls with no reflective striping, calf length non zip type boots and top guards.

Someone in the paid arena should be facilitating (policing) expenditure to ensure adequate PPE(C) is purchased.

Other Government Agencies / Re: What the SES does
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:08:09 PM »
I don't know how (or why) we would monitor CFS/SES rivalry and who has more, urban or rural. From my (limited) observations there are Units/Brigades who work extremely closely with many dual members and get along great. (Some of these are even asking, why not amalgamate?). Then I have seen intense, damaging, horrendous rivalry (yes, in rural areas) that has even jeopordised operations. I do know of an SES Unit that would not allow CFS members to join because they believed there would be a conflict. Not that this necessarily has anything to do with rivalry, I have also heard of SAAS being extra wary taking on fire service members because of availability/hard to serve two emergency services type thing.
I have also seen the same kind of damaging rivalry between Brigades in our own service.

Thankfully there are more and more of us on board whose main aim is to protect life and property from fire and other emergencies and have no time for petty rivalries.

Talk to your Regional Training Officer.

Funding is available for this critical and necessary training.

If we can't get the appliances out of the door it doesn't really matter what other training we may have done.

Well, yes, but not fair....

The 24P we have had for just over a year now is a real goer but the limiter cutting in at 105ish is really quite painful.

Given that we often travel in excess of 20km to priority one jobs on open (110kmh) roads it would be a very, very nice trick.

Not normally a jealous fire truck envy type person, but.....

So what your saying, is if I need to know where spare BA cylinders are on another brigades truck, I should go to the IC, who will ask the OIC of that appliance, who will then designate a crew member to show me where the BA cylinders are?

No... re read my post several times and that's not even close to what I was saying  8-)

What's that, do I understand the post? The limiter is disabled when the lights and sirens are on?

I still don't understand why you need to know what 150+ people have trained in. And be clear there - all the badge, sticker, whatever can show you is that they've been to a training course (that's assuming it's even their helmet) not that they are capable or experienced operators.

ICS principles with their 1:5 ratio should mean that you are only dealing with 5 lots of resources not 150 people. The OIC will know that their SC's or STL's or whatever are qualified to do that. The STL's will know that their crew leaders are qualified to do that. And the crew leaders (or appliance officer, or Brigade OIC whatever) will know what their crews can do.

If you need to run around 150 people looking for BA operators then there is something seriously wrong with the incident management :-)

Incident Operations / Re: ?? (Interesting Jobs)

Apples, hey?

We have a pretty high rate of semi rollovers with my Brigade covering sections of the Dukes, Mallee and Princes Hwys.

Normally refer to them by the loads they were carrying - just quickly I can think of the dog food job, aluminium cans (empty) job, car carrier, pigs (dead on hooks), hay bales, empty glass bottles, dirty magazines (!), heat beads, coffee, BBQ's, TOMATOS (squish), water tanks, cattle .....

Just an example of the loads awaiting us scattered all over the road :-)

Rob, good question - don't know if nominees are actually required to leave according to regs - I'll dig them out and check one day. But we've always been happy to have them leave (even though it is a secret ballot) assuming each would vote for themselves they sorta cancel each other out I guess.

Blu - good on ya and good riddance to the old partner and good on ya for finding the new.

Wayne - spent the long weekend at Quorn where my Dad lives, taking my little ones on endless steam train trips and spotting trips :-)

Nasty accident Wilmington to Quorn road recently :-( Sorry to hear.

What a disgrace!!

Many local businesses have been supplying us what we actually want for years.

BOYCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And rather than promote uniformity I'd imagine we'll see a proliferation of Brigades designing their own logo (based on the fire star or maltese cross, the CFS don't own that) and getting their local supplier to do it up for them.

Frustratinger and frustratinger!!!!!!!!

The first crews that drove over to NSW in 1994 were flown home to HUGE media attention. (You may remember the monitors showering the plane).

These firies had their yellows dry cleaned at the motel and were required (ie: compulsory) to wear the gear for the flight. I guess the imapct would not have been as great if a group of bods in trackies and tees disembarked? Maybe the kind of situation where a practical, ecomnomical, comfortable dress type uniform could be worn??

And as for the toss factor on the dress uniform - maybe, but if you have cause to represent the service on official duties or functions (particularly involving the public) it is very handy to have something to wear that identifies you(in the kind of situations where yellow would look pretty tossy - perhaps visiting a business for risk and response planning, etc).
