Title: Summer Crew Jobs 2008/2009 Fire Season
Post by: Robert-Robert34 on August 04, 2008, 10:56:14 AM
Ok Ok i know im getting into that habit of posting this topic around the same time every year  :roll:

Anyways seeing as how the year has already gone past us real fast :-o and with the fire season just 3 months away its time to ask that question of which company everyone is going to try and get a summer crew job with this season... seeing as how im posting the topic let me open the floor  :-P

After narrowly missing out on numerous summer crew jobs last season im back at it again this season coming but now have the addition of my full certificate 2 in Conservation And Land Management of which i have almost completed at TAFE SA Mount Gambier campus

The bonus part about the full cert 2 in CLM (Conservation&Land Management)is that one of the units is operate and maintain chainsaws of which is safe to say i've successfully completed having passed the practical on the 03/08/2008

Heres a list of companies i am going to try and get into for this season

* Integrated Tree Cropping
* Auspine Forestry
* Hancock Victorian Plantations
* Forestry SA
* Green Triangle Forest Products
* National Parks & Wildlife (DEH)
* DSE Victoria

Now its everyone elses turn  :-)

Oh yeah the chainsaw i had to operate and maintain during the unit was an ECHO and believe me that chainsaw had alot of grunt and i dont mean it grunted like a pig does  :lol:

Maybe that's because they did a good job the previous summer so when they reapply they get rehired rather than risking it by hiring someone who hasn't done the job before and might not be competent and able to do the job.

As a casual with a major pine company I can assure you they don't care about casuals having chainsaw ticket they only let the full timers use them on the fireground

True Ringer but the last few years i have applied for summer crew work with Forestry SA,GTFP,DEH and Auspine i've always noticed that one of the main requirements even though its only a casual 6 month contract is for all applicants to have some sort of chainsaw training or a certification which allows them to do cross cuts or fell trees

With that having been said is probably the reason i've missed out everytime because i wasnt trained in using chainsaws nor had any prior experience in operating a chainsaw  :wink:

Well at least you have the chainsaw piece of paper now so you will soon know if that was the reason you were not getting through the selection process. It usually pays to try and meet all the criteria with jobs like that as so many people apply and unfortunately the more experience you have the more likely you are to get the job

Chainsaws are nice but how about other parts of the job requirements! Do you have Plantation Fire fighting under your belt as well?
Title: Re: Summer Crew Jobs 2008/2009 Fire Season

Actually Ringer might have a point Robert.
You should see your Traning Officer with your brigade and get a nomination form in as soon as possible
(not to sure when the next one is being done but if they have a few people nominating they might run one soon)
And from memory isn't your training officer actualy a Plantation Trainer anyway so he would probably even take the course
Or am I mixing brigades up again?? Can't quite remember but I would certainly get your nomination form in as quick as possible and thn you might get that one done quickly

I'll be looking into that Katrina but the course has to be held in Late Sept or the first weekend in October as our next brigade meeting is on the 08/10/2008 and i'd love to have my certificate presented to me then rather than later

Well there ya go no Plantation, of course the timber companies aren't going to give ya a job. In fact if you been applying all these years and haven't had it they probably more likely to consider you to be a nusiance and a pain in the neck rather than determined to get a job.

And to be quite honest Robert as someone who has done a lot of hiring in the past I used to sit down with all the applications and do a quick run through the qualifications and the one s who all met the minimum requirements went into a pile, another sift through to see if anyone had working experience in a similar area and they joined that pile and the ones who met all the job criteria went in there of course, anyone who couldn't do that missed out. Sounds like what Bill said it is a course you really need to do, better go and have a chat to your Brigade Training Officer because I am sure he will be able to set you straight on that one (I'm sure he has the experience in that sort of area as well Robert so would be the perfect person for you to talk to)

Since when did all these places requior prior firefighting knowlage? i thought they all did in house training?

otherwise their possible recruitment pool would be quite small?

Its about Training so why hassel ya Captain about it, isn't the training officer supposed to handle training issues.  Sounds like you don't like your training officer. I'm sure he's not as bad as you think.

Nah im pointing out, theres lot of jobs asking for previous experience, while there is hardly any jobs that are ground level for a career in certain sectors.

Robert How come I'm getting phone calls from stan because he is severely pissed that certain brigade members are not following the correct procedure and going thru their Brigade Training Officers. Stan is a busy man and does not appreciate having you calling him annoying him when you are supposed to go to your BTO. I am at training every wednesday night and if you actually turned up you would find it easy to get a nomination form from me.  Also your Chainsaw certificate fax was unreadable and stan would like you to give me a decent readable copy of it so i can pass it on to him next time I see him at a course.

True, though it does make it clear that the saga is not as simple as Robert portrays. I have a sneaking suspicion too, that a personal message would be like water off a duck's back.

Kdoo may only be a small brigade but we have three members who are with Auspine tree farms. Glencoe has had at least 2 members with Auspine and another 2 members where up fire towers last year.
