SA Firefighter General / Tree downs
« on: December 29, 2011, 06:03:42 PM »
There was an incident on channel 7 news tonight about the number of large trees falling onto roads, especially in the Hazlewood Park area. At the incident they mentioned how the council aren't taking it serious. They mentioned how the council turned up & cut it down, but funny thing is it was actually the MFS & SES that did the cutting & removal, before the council even got there. Why do they get so confused into which agency is which!

SAAS / SAAS Funding Cutbacks
« on: January 14, 2011, 11:11:45 AM »
FUNDING cutbacks are stripping ambulance workers of resources, leaving patients in danger, the Ambulance Employees Association has warned.
Frontline ambulance workers have backed the warning, saying the cuts will leave them under-prepared to deal with high-stress scenarios.

The South Australian Ambulance Service has announced the first round of "disestablishments" to ambulance officers.

An officer, who did not want to be named, said 11 support positions had already been slashed and more were expected in the coming months.

"We are concerned, because a lot of the drugs we administer can only be given with a doctor's approval, and there are now no doctors specifically assigned to us," he said.

"For example, if we need to administer penicillin to a child with meningococcal, we need permission.

"I am not sure what we are supposed to do now. I suppose they intend us to call a doctor and hope they are reachable."

Ambulance Employees Association industrial officer Wayne Carty said he was concerned the staffing cutbacks would have an impact on their service. "While the staffing cuts were not to frontline officers, they still will have a measurable impact on overall patient care," Mr Carty said.

"Whatever functions are cut, it will inevitably lead to a reduction in services. If you remove people who assist the officers . . . quality care could suffer."

He said the cuts in the rostering department could lead to inconsistent rosters, causing tired and stressed ambulance workers.

SAAS chief executive Ray Creen said the department was committed to maintaining a high standard of patient care and restructuring management and administrative services would not affect this.

"There is no reduction in frontline positions and the recently revised clinical governance structure provides a much larger network of doctors and other medical professionals who can offer medical advice and oversight," he said.

In November, the Government revealed 947 health-sector jobs would be cut over four years as part of its plan to save $2 billion from the public sector.

SAAS / Women steal from ambulance
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:13:57 PM »
TWO northern suburbs women accused of stealing equipment from an ambulance last night will face court in December.
The Paralowie woman, 22, and an Elizabeth East woman, 18, were arrested and charged with illegal interference and theft.

Police said an SA Ambulance crew was sent to a Salisbury North home about 11.20pm after a call from a woman for medical assistance.

"While at the scene the ambulance was allegedly interfered with and numerous items stolen," a police spokesman said.

Shortly after, police arrested and charged the women.

They were bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on December 6.

SA Firefighter General / Full time CFS?
« on: January 06, 2010, 05:05:50 PM »
I was wondering why we don't have full time cfs stations?
For example, seaford has a mets station being built because of the population and commercial growth in the area, which already has a cfs station. Why couldn't the cfs station operate full time or retained rather than building a mets station?
There already is an existence of paid cfs personnel so why not become a full time responding operation in certain areas?

SA Firefighter General / Wet T-shirt comp.
« on: October 19, 2009, 12:14:57 PM »
A WET T-shirt controversy has broken out among female firefighters who have complained their new NSW Rural Fire Service shirts become see-through when wet.

More than 600 volunteers joined a Facebook petition to object to the issuing of the bright yellow shirts to replace existing navy blue ones.

Women complained that when they sweat, handle leaking hoses, wash or fill their trucks and even when it rains, their male colleagues can see through their new shirts.

"Most women aren't too happy about it. We're not doing the job to be glamorous. We're not sex objects," Sydney volunteer Maryann Berndt, 34, said yesterday.

"You can get quite wet on the fire ground, you always get wet from leaking hoses or filling up the trucks."

In an email forwarded to Opposition emergency services spokeswoman Melinda Pavey, another female firefighter wrote: "I do not like the yellow long sleeved T-shirts for the fact that after you have rolled a few wet hoses or ended up with water all over you they become completely see-through.

Ms Pavey said the shirts were issued to firefighters without consultation.

"It is demeaning there is no thought for women volunteers and what may happen if the shirts get wet. It shows a lack of respect for what women do in the RFS," Ms Pavey said.

There were dozens of posts on the Facebook petition site to save the blue drill shirts, including firefighters comparing the new all yellow look to the yellow member of the The Wiggles.

"RFS Wiggles," one member wrote.

Another wrote: "Hope this (petition) works. The yellow life saver shirts are filtered ugly."

An RFS spokesman said the shirts would be issued to volunteers free, unlike the navy ones which members have to pay for and which will remain for sale.

He added that while first yellow shirts issued were of thinner fabric, the next ones due to be issued would have pockets over the chest and would not be see through when wet.

"The colour yellow has been used due to its high visibility. Also, during independent testing in Alberta, Canada, it has been identified that the blue coloured clothing absorbs more heat," he said.

Incident Operations / Exeter house fire
« on: July 12, 2009, 10:24:24 PM »
Fire guts Exeter house

It is understood the fire started in the kitchen of the house as the occupants prepared the evening meal. The timber house was burnt to the ground.

The two occupants were able to escape the burning building, one running to their neighbours for help.

A neighbour, identifying herself only as Kathy, said her home was in the path of the wind-fanned flames.

"I just heard Betty come running out screaming "call 000 - fire"," she said.

At the height of the fire, flames reached 20m above the house and the wind was blowing them over a neighbouring residence.

"There was all these flames shooting out and we could hear bangs - something exploding," Kathy said

"The firefighters were fantastic - the first thing they did was put water on my house and they undoubtedly saved it.

"But the water kept cutting out on them.

"It would pour out really fast like you'd expect - then it'd just stop - then start to trickle again.

"But they (firefighters) did a fantastic job - they saved our house."

The MFS had to tap water main from nearby streets to obtaining sufficient water pressure to tackle the blaze.

SA Firefighter General / Not happy
« on: June 08, 2009, 08:49:48 PM »
I have just seen something that i find unacceptable.
I was walking my dog with a friend in Gawler and heard a siren which i recognised as an MFS truck, i also heard another siren intersecting with that one. I then noticed the fire truck approaching me. All of a sudden, just before a bend, on a dark, wet and uneven surfaced road, a police car o/takes the fire truck.
With all the accidents happening lately and the weather conditions, aswell as the appliance with its lights and sirens going, i think it is unneccessary for the police car to do this and risked unnecessary threat to the public safety.

What is every ones opinion on situations like this?

SA Firefighter General / Fibre optic cables
« on: June 05, 2009, 04:06:01 PM »
DAMAGE to fibre optic cables which left several State Government offices without communication on Budget Day is being investigated by police.

The underground cable was cut during the early hours yesterday.

Crime Scene Investigators tested the cables for fingerprints after the damage was discovered at about 6am.

Contractors were called to repair the severed cables but hundreds of government staff were left without email, internet and telephone services for the day.

Most services were restored by the time offices opened yesterday.

It also affected the MFS communications

OFF Topic / Horny firies!
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:43:20 AM »
FIREFIGHTERS are using taxpayer-funded computers to view pornography and gamble online while working, a leaked email has revealed.

And one veteran officer, sacked for viewing porn, is fighting his dismissal on the grounds that his behaviour was an "accepted culture".

The Metropolitan Fire Service sacked senior firefighter Shane McInerney after an investigation found he had used computers for his own "vouyeristic, sexual interests" over a two-year period. He is challenging the ruling in the District Court in a bid to clear his name and to get his job back.

His battle comes as the extent of the unauthorised behaviour has been revealed in an email, sighted by the Sunday Mail, which was sent to all MFS stations last November.

District Officer Kevin Eckermann wrote to firefighters saying many personnel were using the internet for "well over 10 hours per month".

"Gentlemen. Following the latest issue of monthly internet usage, it appears that many Fire Fighters are accessing in-appropriate sites," he wrote in the November 10 email, addressed to station officers and to Command District Officers.

"These sites are varied with the following catorgay (sic) being used many times, Gambling, Games, Communications, Chat, Business Services, Entertainment, Vehicles, Real Estate, Sports, Financial and even XXX sites.

"Could you please make all crews aware of Policy 43 Internet usage and ensure they adhere to it."

Under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005, a firefighter must not use property for an unauthorised purpose "without proper excuse".

Mr McInerney was sacked on August 3, 2007, after an investigation by the MFS Disciplinary Committee found he had viewed more than 400 "vile and degrading" pictures on a computer at the Port Adelaide Fire Station between August 13, 2003, and November 15, 2005.

Among the images, discovered in hidden folders, were graphic sexual acts, dismembered and mutilated bodies and even one of a naked young child milking a goat, the court documents show.

In its 142-page ruling the committee, headed by Magistrate Bill Morris, said the firefighter of 18 years' experience had used the equipment merely for "personal, sexually, salacious entertainment" and to satisfy his own "vouyeristic, sexual interests".

"To use the computer systems in this way for mere personal pleasure and purient sexual interest is serious misconduct and must have serious consequences," it said.

"Some of these images were vile and degrading, some might be described as child pornography. It is incomprehensible that an employee would not know that this conduct was unacceptable."

The disciplinary committee also said his motive for viewing mutilated bodies "could have been" as a consequence of an "unwholesome personal fascination, or obsession".

"We consider that in the public interest, the employee's motives in viewing such images should be a matter of grave concern," it said.

Three colleagues were also reprimanded during the investigation.

In his defence, Mr McInerney's solicitor, Anthony Kerin, had asked the committee to take into account his client's record and years of service.

The committee heard that Mr McInerney had rescued numerous people from burning buildings and had volunteered to assist in devastating bushfires in New South Wales in 1994 and 2001.

Mr McInerney would not speak publicly about the case but he had told the committee that viewing pornography was "accepted".

"It was something that everyone, everyone does, and I guarantee I've seen a hell of a lot worse on other people's emails," he said during cross-examination.

He confirmed he may have accessed images of dismembered corpses but only to "harden himself up" to the possibility of viewing human remains.

MFS senior public affairs officer Nicole Ely said the organisation had a "zero tolerance" towards the use of inappropriate sites. "All staff internet usage is monitored, making us confident our workforce does not misuse the internet," she said. "There have not been any such disciplinary or dismissal cases in the past 12 months."

I noticed elizabeths original 331 wasn't online but an older scania was in its place, guessing 331 was being serviced. 2 days later, it had a f7 volvo in its bay and just yesterday it had the older, relieve pumper again. Does anyone know why the relief pumpers are being juggled around?
P.S, 332 was at the station on all occasions, so the difference in trucks wont have anything to do with a COQ's.
