Thanks Ringer the idea of me and Robert spending the summer together spotting fire towers ????? (I don't think there is an image showing someone rolling around with laughter is there?)

:-DOr a good looking trainer can keep you interested or at least awake for the whole course (I do remember paying particular attention for a whole module one time because the person taking it had the nicest butt out )

So does anyone here actually have summer seasonal jobs (either up a fire tower or on other paid (Oh I do like that word) jobs relating to fire fighting?

well the weekend before was more enjoyable as I went and played down at Kalangadoo (and no before anyone asks I did not see Robert at all) but that was about the end of my thrilling Saturdays. Though I will admit the one the other week will probably last me a couple of months

But will any of us pay to see this movie Bill????? Umm count me out!!!!

Because if you don't tell them no you can spend an awful long time regretting it as some brigades have found out

Got told Penola gets there's within the fortnight, I knew things had been put in pipeline but was starting to think was actually dreaming and that it would never actually happen

I hear that Penola and some other stations in Wattle Range might be getting some new trucks (or are they getting new second hand ones???) who else is getting new trucks around the place or is it like shuffling a deck of cards and only 1 station getting a new truck and then we just move the rest around?

And to be quite honest Robert as someone who has done a lot of hiring in the past I used to sit down with all the applications and do a quick run through the qualifications and the one s who all met the minimum requirements went into a pile, another sift through to see if anyone had working experience in a similar area and they joined that pile and the ones who met all the job criteria went in there of course, anyone who couldn't do that missed out. Sounds like what Bill said it is a course you really need to do, better go and have a chat to your Brigade Training Officer because I am sure he will be able to set you straight on that one (I'm sure he has the experience in that sort of area as well Robert so would be the perfect person for you to talk to)

This is happening in everything. I was offered to be given a bit more training in a course I had only just done to then become a trainer. I couldn't believe that was the way they wanted to go. I had no experience, had only just undertaken the training myself and they were going to let me loose training other people. I can remember when chainsaw training first came in for vineyard workers and everyone trotted along to the TAFE trainer to learn all about chainsaws - the fella taking the course trotted out with a very tiny chainsaw (it took me a while to work out it was a real one and not a realistic kids toy for the toy shop) and proceeded to instruct, he had no idea and was being paid huge money to deliver this course.
I will take experience over paper work only anyday. And even better experience with some paperwork.
Any trainers care to comment??

Yeah and the fat controller would love me for that!!!!! Would have taken several things for that to happen - would have actually had to have been told about it, that would be a good start. If they don't ask for people to help in all the regions and brigades then how can it be said there is not enough volunteers as we havén't all been asked.
Also the idea of leaving enough crew on the ground is another issue, the last few jobs there has only been me for the first part of it so that would definately cause a problem and quite often the ones that are available to do things like that are the crew that is most readily available for jobs as well. Some of us also can't just take time off and still get paid for it, that means we lose income

Actually Ringer might have a point Robert.
You should see your Traning Officer with your brigade and get a nomination form in as soon as possible
(not to sure when the next one is being done but if they have a few people nominating they might run one soon)
And from memory isn't your training officer actualy a Plantation Trainer anyway so he would probably even take the course
Or am I mixing brigades up again?? Can't quite remember but I would certainly get your nomination form in as quick as possible and thn you might get that one done quickly

Hmm, but just a little bit to far for me to travel as a volunteer to do something to life the profile of CFS. Don't know if you've noticed the price of petrol these days but I don't think I can come at the cost of that to get there and then the accommodation while up there

I personally could think of better things to do, watch my grass grow, wash the car, polish the truck etc etc.

69
Well at least you have the chainsaw piece of paper now so you will soon know if that was the reason you were not getting through the selection process. It usually pays to try and meet all the criteria with jobs like that as so many people apply and unfortunately the more experience you have the more likely you are to get the job

70
Yeah just saw that myself on the on line news but no further information than what is on the page

How do you get one of those done so quickly, ours seem to get sent off and come back via slow camel to Timbuktoo

73
  :-D

74
Maybe that's because they did a good job the previous summer so when they reapply they get rehired rather than risking it by hiring someone who hasn't done the job before and might not be competent and able to do the job.

Unless Captain Camo was in charge then I'm sure all would have been okay!
