They can't use the existing GRN or VHF's as the Vic & SA radio systems aren't compatible.

Pip

We had big issues with this at the Eden Valley fire with the NSW crews. Had to end up communicating via general UHF channels.

The VHFs are not completely incompatible with each other. Whilst they don't share the same channel numbers, some channels share the same transmit AND recieve frequencies. We discovered this at Bangor. For future reference playing with the radios for 5 minutes will save days of heart ache. Don't quote me but RFS channel 12 and CFS channel 5 comes to mind as able to talk to eachother. I've had a few beers since then so I could be wrong

It'd be interesting to see how that would go with National Parks firefighters also seeing as they to an extent come under the CFS banner. Not to take any shine off exposures by vollies but DEWNR firefighters, especially those who have been arond for many years are easily the most (bushfire) smoke exposed firefighters in the state. 30+ prescribed burns a year exposed to consistently heavy smoke for many hours a day, many days in a row, then add the standard fires that happen during the season account for a huge intake of smoke.

Damned if they do...
Damned if they don't.

Yes. The comments on these articles secretly amuse me. That is all

No worries. Thanks for confirming that ABS

I can see that people are saying people have been notified about the second drill squad.  But has anyone here ACTUALLY been notified themselves? Or are we all running on heresay as usual?

Seems the second drill squad gets a lot more warning in prep for PAT2 than first drill squad...

Not really, if you applied earlier this year then you were told approximately when the pat2 was gonna be months in advance.

Eh true that.

I'm still wondering if anyone has actually heard themselves that they're in.  Just trying to keep my hopes up

Sounds like phytophthora is spreading.  Don't panic people. There'll be no trees at all before long

I know when we first used the QAV operationally before it went to Upper Sturt it had a few niggles, maybe caused by unfamiliarity.  The one way valve from tank to pump can cause a big boom (which it did when I gave it water from an ol' dakka dakka) when someone inadvertantly tries to fill from the pump inlet rather than the tiny hydrant fill line and secondly the bleeder valve on top of the tank had to be lifted to bleed out the air before the tank blew up like a balloon.  The latter probably just a fault.  The one way valve could have been a problem moreso in the fact it would (and did) render the QAV U/S from a minor mistake by filling up from the wrong green inlet.

My only niggles would be the small diameter hydrant fill piping which didn't seem help with speedy tank fills, actually took a fair amount of time to fill the little tank and secondly that damn check valve...

My opinion only.

Interference from two pagers side by side corrupting data is a bit 1980's for my liking.

The two pagers recieve page data at the same time, process it at the same time and then alert at the same time. Induced interference from the digital processing of one pager interfering with the digital processing of the second pager is non-existant.  That's like saying one digital wristwatch will interfere with another digital wristwatch. They're all passive digital devices. Maybe the 100VDC @ a few thousand Hz running the backlight could induce something but the pagers would have already recieved the potentially corruptable incoming RF data. (That's why you get corrupt data sometimes now if you are in a basement or taking a dump) Once the RF data is received there is no going back.

Personally I'd rather see MFS and CFS have the same colour shirts since we're all on the same team if/when we head off interstate and if/when we dual turnout back home.

Rather looking like the motley crew (blue/green/grey/pink/tiedye/add description here) that we (CFS) presented ourselves through Melbourne airport enroute to the Vic Fires.

Cheap-ish LED torches on each member's helmet - fixes OH&S issue of moving around in the dark & leaves both hands free to work. People who want to spend much more for a 'proper' helmet torch are welcome to do so...

What torches have you been fitting?  I've been looking for something a little cheaper than the UKE 4AA eLED and mount for my wildfire helmet.

Country Fire Service / Re: Paid jobs
« on: October 23, 2008, 03:11:58 PM »
I know that jobs are advertised internally to the government employees first.  If they are not filled within a 'certain' period of time they are then posted publicly.  Obviously frustrating to the people left behind as they have to pick up the workload while the red tape increases the time for the job to be filled into the months.  State Government policy rather than CFS.

You can tell on the home page quick search bit where it gives the options for searching 'I am a current South Australian Government employee' or 'I am not a current South Australian Government employee'

Red Tape...she's a wonderful thing
