Country Fire Service / Future Focus
« on: October 25, 2008, 12:32:04 PM »
Ok....lets try and get some decent discussion happening.

The CFS has a tight budget but there are things that need to be focussed upon now to make the service better for the future.  Ive added a few in the poll of what i believe should be considered.

Vote for your favourite idea or maybe write down your idea below.  Remember though....the budget is tight so realistically only 2 options can be selected.

Country Fire Service / 52mm vs 38mm Hose
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:04:27 PM »
So what do people think?

Not being able to freely connect 64mm to 38mm will cause issues i believe, so perhaps moving to a 52mm hose would be of benefit.  It would also standardise the hose between the MFS and CFS.

That then leaves only 25mm on wajax for rural applications and any 38mm canvas some brigades use for forestry applications.

Country Fire Service / Recruitment Strategies
« on: August 09, 2008, 01:09:03 PM »
Gday,

What recruitment strategies have brigades used in the past that have worked well?

Or what strategies should the CFS use in the future?

Also is there funding available to brigades to help with recruitment?

Country Fire Service / Looking to the future
« on: August 09, 2008, 01:07:05 PM »
Gday,

What do you see happening in the CFS in the future as far as the structure goes?

What would people think if we were to remove groups from the CFS?  good idea or a bad idea?

Each brigade receives funding they require rather than groups dishing the money out to brigades.

SA Firefighter General / RCR responses in Port Augusta District
« on: July 05, 2008, 01:34:48 PM »
Gday,

Not being from the district im not really sure how things operate up that way so im hoping someone can fill me in.

MFS: *CFSRES INC022 05/07/08 11:01,RESPOND Vehicle Accident,STUART HWY,PORT AUGUSTA MAP 0 0 0 TG192,100 KM NTH OF TOWN CAR AND VAN ROLLOVER,- NIL ENTRAPMENTS,PAU519
-= MFS Port Augusta Response =-

MFS: *CFSRES INC022 05/07/08 11:07,RESPOND Vehicle Accident,STUART HWY,PORT AUGUSTA MAP 0 0 0 TG192,100 KM NORTH OF TOWN - CAR AND VAN ROLLO,VER - NIL ENTRAPMENTS - MFS RESPONDING A,S WELL,STLN19
-= CFS Stirling North Response =-

Fire Call. More crew required URGENTLY
-= MFS Port Augusta Response =-

STLN: *CFSRES: MORE CREW REQUIRED RESPOND STIRLING_NTH STATION 05-07-08 11
-= CFS Stirling North Response =-

Now it appears that both brigades are responding to a Vehicle Accident 100km north of the town.  Thus leaving Pt Augusta and stirling north reasonably unprotected.  I assume this because both were struggling for crew plus this following page -

MFS: PORT PIRIE RETAINED CREW CHANGE QUARTERS TO PORT AUGUSTA PER S/O MELIN REQUEST
-= MFS Pt Pirie Fulltimers Response =-

FIRE CALL ATTEND STATION
-= MFS Pt Pirie Retainers Response =-

Also on a funny note they paged the fulltimers instead of the retainers even though the page stated retainers!

Anyway what are everyones thoughts?

SA Firefighter General / Volunteer Week Commercial
« on: May 11, 2008, 09:25:57 PM »
Gday,

Anyone else seem the volunteer week commercial with the acrobats?  The pagers going off in tone 7, although a great tool to grab attention, isnt that nice for actual firefighters.  Had a couple of us looking at our pagers anyway.

CFS: SIG INC: FYI: CONFIRMING TELECONFERENCE AT 1530 HRS THIS AFTERNOON REGARDING FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES ACT. COMMANDERS & MANAGERS PLEASE ATTEND - REGARDS A.LAWSON. > 09/05/2008 9:39:32 AM CFS STC Info

Anyone know what's up with the act?

It was reviewed after being implemented for 2 years.  Was written in the act as a mandatory thing to be completed.

So id be guessing the teleconference would be to discuss the 49 recommendations for change?

SA Firefighter General / Future Technology in the Fire Service
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:42:39 PM »
Gday,

What technology would you like to see introduced into the service in the future?  Whether or not it exists doesnt matter - be inventful.  Just give a good reason as why this would be a benefit to the service and justifiable to spend money on.

One thought i had was pagers being able to transmit an acknowledgement to your station & comms so the brigade knew who was responding.  It would also speed up defaults.  If comms could see after 1 min or 30 seconds that only 2 people had acknowledged the pager response then they could page the default brigade.

It would mean quicker responses also as you wouldnt have to wait around once you knew you had everyone that was coming. Im not sure if this technology is available at all or if it is even possible or what the cost would be to the service but i believe it would be a great benefit to the service.

Fire Fighter Training / BFF1
« on: February 18, 2008, 04:02:38 PM »
Gday,

Quite commonly i have people complaining to me about the current state of the BFF1 course.

What are peoples thoughts on this issue?  What should be changed?

My main thought is - somehow bring the course back to fit into a weekend comfortably.

Country Fire Service / Private/Fixed Alarms
« on: February 14, 2008, 02:32:33 PM »
Gday,

Was reading through the SOP's and came across 4.5 Responding to Automatic Fire Alarms.

One line says "Crews donned in CABA will undertake investigation of the affected circuit(s).  They should be prepared to undertake offensive firefighting & rescue if required."

How does your brigade investigate a circuit that has activated?  Do you carry a fire extinguisher with you? Halligan tool? Ladder?

It is obvious you wouldnt be dragging hoselines through the building so what does your brigade do?
