Country Fire Service / Paid Service or not
« on: April 25, 2005, 10:52:09 AM »
Hi there all

I would like to see the service stay as a volunteer organisation but some sort of exeption from the leve or tax breaks would be nice.  (but how do we police it?) - another duty for the Officers?

What I would like to see is for a full time paided admin/station keeper etc for each of the busy stations - or even one per group to help decrease the huge amounts of paperwork being distributed & processed.  In other word try and take some of the politic's out of the brigades.

This is just my views and I am asking the forum for feed back?

Thanks

Wayne

Industrial & Private Fire Services / Private Units
« on: April 25, 2005, 10:19:59 AM »
Hi there all

There is good and bad issues with private units.  There is already a CFS standard a private unit has to meet before assisting.

In our area with the national parks the private units are paramount with the majority of incidents.  For Example - a fire in the Hills South of Melrose early in the year private units out numbered the CFS fleet by 2:1 - some time cordinating them possed other problems.

Obviousley it would be difficult to check private units for standards whilst on the fireground - so we do it this way.

Prior to the start of the fire danger season we have a information night followed with a BBQ - the soul purpose is to notify the standards (its all common sense stuff) they are to required to meet with there vehicles whilst on the fireground.  The discussion durring the evening also keeps them up to date with changes and we strongly strongly enforce they notify base before leaving so we can keep a record who is on the fire ground.

Thanks

Guys

Thanks for the response - when you get the phase 2 up and running let me know as I have three vintage appliance to add.

1955 Land Rover S I (fire engine - small rural)
1958 Land Rover S I (Ex Woomera (WES)
1964 Land Rover S IIa (Ex army Fire Tender)

I May need some help with posting pictures (still a learner)

Can we also add an additional section - fire engine parts for sale - there is alot of restorations going on and it would be good to have a section where you can either sell or post wanted adverts.

Sorry to pile all this work/surgestions on to you but if you dont ask you will never know - feel free to contact me via PM or e-mail.

I have been currently using a site in QLD - not a bad site for tracking down that missing part/parts.

I will also have a look at the other web site.

Many thanks

SAMFS / Services MFS - CFS - SES

Hi there all

as kat said above "Very complex issue studied by learned scholars, committees and parliamentarians for years and years and unlikely to be solved by us on this forum.  - HOW VERY TRUE.

I have been involved with this issue for some time - and I do not like raising a problem unless there is answers.

I have been fortunate to see the CFA way - with the VFBA (Volunteers - Retained - Fulltime) I dont think we should be heading down this road to quickly.

But the dual - co-location issue is very ripe in the field and all its doing causing volunteers to throw there hands in the air in anger - we dont need power play - but I also dont know the answers.

Thanks

SAAS / Patient lifting.
« on: April 25, 2005, 08:06:45 AM »
Hi there Mike

You have raised a good point.

We are lucky within our rural brigade as we also carry SAAS gear on the appliance as we are deemed "first responders"

For those whom have not heard the term "first responders" - its a group of CFS volunteers whom have been trained to deal with the issues of Ambulance care (By SAAS) - as we are usually first at the scene (as Ambulance response can be timely to our location)

Therefore we are trained for patient care & lifting techniques.

SA Firefighter General / BA Issues - financial
« on: April 25, 2005, 06:46:13 AM »
Hi there all again.

Well I would hate to burst your bubble - there are still brigades within our state whom are still struggling with money issues.

I also take into consideration - this could be also due to poor managment of finances in the past.

I will agree with the statement Brigades are far better of with the current finance situation - but it will take time.

Thanks

SA Firefighter General / BA Issues
« on: April 24, 2005, 05:55:59 PM »
Hi there again.

How true - its a Group responsibility to suply PPE - With limited funds we are still getting our heads above the level 1 PPE equipment requirements.

The main objective: I was possing a question for the forum - should the BA sets be left of an appliance if the brigade has NO BA members?

Country Fire Service / Fitness
« on: April 24, 2005, 05:46:47 PM »
Well it been a really topsy turvey documented discussion above.

Fitness is an issue - with my work we now have to partake a fitness assesment every year, part of my paid employment.

With the volunteer services how far do we go (Mike I do agree with what you have stated above).  As a brigade - group leader you have the final say with who goes and stays.  An incident is the same you know the people within your crew whom can handle some things and others whom canot.

I was asked when commiting crews to interstate (Group level) the question of fitness - it was asked at region level before commitment.

There is a job within the CFS for everyone.

Thanks

SA Firefighter General / BA Operators
« on: April 24, 2005, 05:27:58 PM »
Hi there all - again top web site.

I would like to document my opinion regarding BA Operators.

We have a shortage of BA operators  - but I dont believe they have every yet been used in anger and hope they never are.  When I first joined the brigade 3 years ago I had the only set of level 3 PPE? (Not much has improved over time)

Who checks this - is there an audit process - we have one of the three brigades within our group whom are demmed BA brigade.  Dont have any current BA members -  under a duty of care should  these sets temporary relocated to the next closest BA brigade until BA qualifications for the brigade are met? (Just a question I will throw into the forum)

Thanks

SA Firefighter General / Hi there
« on: April 24, 2005, 05:01:47 PM »
Crew turnouts -

I am a volunteer with a small rural brigade - I am amazed with the amount of volunteers whom turn up at the station when the siren is activated (and pagers) its not abnormal to get 10-15 people and not long after the appliances have left (24 & 14) then the private units turn up to assist.

We live in hilly country (surounded with national parks) you have to nip these small incidents in the but before they escalate.  To the locals this land is there lively hood because there properties are usually ajoining these park lands.

In saying that I have been member of a brigades with simular problem people have mentioned above - the lack of members especially day crews.  At the end of the day we can only do what we can do - I am passionate about the CFS but we do NOT wear our underpants on the out side of our overals-two peice uniforms

thanks for reading

« on: April 24, 2005, 03:33:28 PM »
Hi there

First time on the site - what a great site - exellent idea.

I would like to see a section on vintage Fire Engines/Trucks - there is alot around in the back of shed/stations .  It would be good if we could have an area set asside to display these great old vintage machines (pictures eg a gallery)

I would like to start the section with three vintage fire vehicles.

many thanks

Wayne
