It wouldn't be a fire season if we didn't see at least one of these.  :-D

Didn't they already have 1 crew out with a strike team to Tunkillo already.  That and being a Friday night, I think this comment may be a little over the top.

SAMFS / Re: New MFS station for Salisbury
« on: March 08, 2013, 07:57:33 PM »
After seeing the price of $1.3m for our new SA state logo, I take everything I said about the new station back, at only $7m what a bargain.

Being ex member of the Barossa Group I have some inside understanding.
The brigades have been requested to page to the groupies when mobile and when back in station, and most brigades there page when station closing.
The pages for mobile I found as a member helpful. If I was a distance away as was heading there for the callout and was told both appliances had left then there is no need for me to 'rush' to the station, instead I could make other stops as neccesary.
Same for paging back, no need to drop past station to see if needed.
All the rest always seemed a waste of time, energy, batteries, patience, etc.

In a previous life ie 2 brigades ago, we had a firie that use to turn up for a call then ask what it was.  In those days the alarm tone was the same as tone 7 on the pager, so we set the pager alarm for 3am.  She was feeling a bit odd when she got there and no one else turned up.  After that she never just turned up on the tone or if she did she didnt ask.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: Training Night Ideas
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:50:43 PM »
We did something similar to that too Pip but from the crew deck on the trucks and on a hill.  The idea was to push the ball up the hill and back down keeping it under control at all times, with one truck either side.  Great for team work, communications, hose skills and driver training all in one. But yes much better done on a warm night.

With my earlier post, I was not begrudging the MFS boys and girls of a top notch facility, I more inclined to believe the govt are being ripped off.  Does it really cost this amount of money to build it, is all I'm saying.  While were on the history trip, my father used to work for the PBD in ages past, pity theres not something like this still around, then Salisbury can have there new station and region 2 HQ could be repaired.
But then maybe I'm just ignorant to the price of things.

Driving back to Adelaide from north of Clare, first spotted the smoke from just south of georgetown, so very suprised to see that page later.  It was quite a decent smoke column by the time I passed the area.

I would be interested to know what you get for 7m.  Even with the fit out of kitchen gyms etc it sounds like a hell of a lot of money unless new trucks are included. Now i'm no builder but if you can build a common house for $200,000, land not included surely a large construction like this can be done for half the price. Is it good value for money or just a case of it's Government lets jack up the price.

Sounds like it will be an impressive one, for $7 million you'd hope so.  Looking forward to seeing it progress.

:? Well I'm stumped this year, just been flicking through the adelaidenow site, they are talking about huge fires still uncontrolled in the 10's of thousand of acreas, threatening towns etc in NSW, Vic and Tassie.  What has me stumped is why no request for assistance from here, I know we have upcoming hot days, but shouldn't you fight the fight you have now and leave enough to cover if needed. I would gather many firies in the eastern states have been going for a week or more, most of the firies here are fit and well rested.

Just my opinion

On the topic of weather, for those who have access to the restricted BOM site, does anyone know what happened to the lightning data pages.  Have they been removed, moved or is it a short term fault.

Cheers

SA Firefighter General / Re: Diesel Shortage
« on: December 12, 2012, 05:49:37 PM »
There was a page out earlier in the week to one of the groups bordering Victoria, warning brigades to fill appliances due to a shortage in Vic, and the potential for trucks to cross the border for fuel.

With a state hazmat appliance being there I cant see it either.  Is Glen Osmond 441 based there whilst their new station is built, and could some people have seen this and making their own conclusions.
