SA Firefighter General / Re: Retrofitted cab deluge system
« on: March 22, 2012, 12:21:15 PM »
Meh personally what a waste of money on a single cab appliance..

Is it still a waste of money of it saves a life (or 6)?

If SMD 1 is performed correctly the halo system isn't needed...

If we're not in the wrong place, at the wrong time, SMD's 1 and 2 aren't needed.

Meh, shut the road till its safe.

Genuine curiosity...how do you bring cars to a stop from 100km/hr without leadup signage when you shut the road, compared to slowing them down to 40 or 25 ?

eFlares attached to cones if there's a bend in the road.

Otherwise, Mr/Ms Public should see the flashy/blinky lights on the big truck(s) from a goodly distance.

General rule of thumb is to give the punters four seconds to wake up and do something.

I've seen something, somewhere that says if the speed limit is 100 km/h, set your first sign 150 metres away (i.e. 1.5 times the speed limit in metres). Seems pretty reasonable.

Advice I give people new to traffic control, "Always assume the public are drunk/stupid/homicidal and have at least two escape routes."

As OIC, if I don't like the scene, the road gets closed.

Safety of my crew is more important.

have the vollys on here had a look at the new certificate 4 manuals on SAASnet?

one of the ESS guys was showing me the other day. alot of the A&P stuff is at the level we had to be at when I did my diploma in the 1990's. I was reading the IV and medication one and noted that cert 4 guys can now flush IV's and start IV's on people already cannualted with a bung insitu under consult. Plus RN's who volunteer with SAAS can now cannualte , give morphine, follow paramedic protocols ect (again on SAASnet).

SAASNet is difficult to find anything on at the best of times, do you have a link to the manuals or the policy recognising nursing qualifications?

Bill, it's been a stated CFS and MFS position for ages that crews will not be paged for non MVA Medical First Response, thats SAAS's role.

Happened a couple of weeks ago, in Peterborough, if I recall it correctly. Lady in cardiac arrest, ambulance coming from Jamestown or similar.

I listened to a instructional cd on how to encourage people trapped in high rise situations, was very interesting, went something like this. " I was walking down the street one day, when I saw a house on fire, there was a man shouting and screaming from a upper story window, to the crowd gathered there below, for he was so afraid".....Cant quite remember the rest!
The cd is still available for sale, I think the narrators were...English and it was Clive someone and Derek someone!

There waaaaaas no blanket!

Best album evar!

Tonto, have you read this thread? read Pipsters post above.

1. Yes.
2. I did.

My thoughts were (and still are) my own.

Yours may differ. That's OK, you're allowed (first rule of Kibology).

hmmm, whats everyones thoughts? since we dont know the details might leave out presumptions.

Initial thought: gross misuse of resources. CFS have no training for this type of thing. Police should have been responded, NOT CFS.

Subsequent thought: "PROCEDE" is misspelt.

It is a turbo 4!!! The local crew reckon it's gutless compared to the previous mercs. but they like the reversing camera

The reversing camera is great.

The 4 cylinder can't handle hills. The 5 cylinders were better. Both overheat when climbing hills in Summer.

The drawer is a nuisance.

The Mercedes are much better for attending patients than the Fords' more headroom, more space in the airway seat.

The Fords were overrated. The V8 sounded great but the vehicles were invariably tail-heavy and prone to understeer and body roll. Communication between front & back was difficult because of noise.

Naturally, all the above is IMNSFHO.

Remove that front part and that thing would work a treat on the hill at Adelaide oval, chuck in a blow up pool and 40deg days at the one day games would never be the same.  :-D

For "blow up pool" read: "buoywall portable dam"
