Why doing burnover drills now??? hmm, new members? some people been away for several months with work, now available again? refresh some minds again? Just part of the on going cycle of doing training? All reasons apply for one brigade that did burnover drill the other week

SA Firefighter General / Re: Will you Stay or Leave Early?
« on: February 23, 2009, 03:33:28 PM »
I think the biggest thing that people don't understand about stay or go is that it is really refering to a well set up house.
People seem to think that if they wave a garden hose around and dampen everything down that it will be okay to stay, and of course the fire truck will be parked outside there house (though I think this year that thought will actually begin to change - then again maybe not judging on some conversation my sister had up at Sprinton with locals who couldn't understand why she would not be staying - lets say transportable, surrounded by lots of large gum trees, no cleared area around the house duh!)
We wont be staying as our house used to be transportable so is up off the ground so is the number one reason for not staying!! Also next door (we live in Penola) actually on all sides of us are houses with real interesting cocktail mixes in their shed so would be pretty much expecting them to go up with a bang.

My assumption would be that a lot of the NSW crews would be up near their border the same as we go just across out border.

Thanks Pip!! You put it well, I had typed up something several times to go on there and just ended up as more of a rant so deleted it!! 108 dead is the toll this morning - managed to track all of our lot down and they're okay - they have no idea of their properties at the moment but will find out later on today.

Yes it does amaze me about people's attitude to fire and how it will be all okay and lets leave it until the flames are at the gate (or throwing buckets off water wearing shorts only - and yes I do mean no shoes) BUT I have seen some footage and spoken to some people and the speed that this fire moved through was unbelievable. We were running small incident along the border when the Coleraine fire started up (we have the vic radio on and next to ours due to being right along the border) and hearing the first person on the scene as he was calling for trucks and issuing instructions you could tell it was moving fast and this was early in the day. There is nothing worse than being able to hear in someone's voice the stress (and I will state that this was coming over very calm and together) as he was having to wait for more units to arrive

« on: February 03, 2009, 07:47:56 PM »
Sometimes the station open note on the pager refers to the group store being open for getting "stuff" from whoever is in charge of handing it out. Not so much a case of actually getting into the station (I have not idea if that is the case with Salisbury but I know that is how it is with some of the other groups)

Yeah we got friends who now have a good fire break on one side of their property - it burnt right up to the road and was held there, they have chosen to stay and defend (well protected) their property.

The Doo didn't get out the door before a stop call was issued - well all other brigades called were fully crewed and mobile - the doo captain acknowledged the stop call - so maybe that is the .5

I'll stick to the radios/phones and the food can look after itself (unless I'm out there on the fire ground in a command vehicle and then it better be good LOL) Well on the food side, it involves making a phone call to bakery/fisho or wherever I can find it depending on the time of night but don't ask me to cut sandwiches

Yep that's what started it all (once bun fight finished and smoke cleared from the air kids and family were allowed on vehicles but many a person has a nasty taste in their mouth from the whole situation)

I guess I'm going to wait and see how it goes for a few weeks, see what bugs they've ironed out and how they go with current incidents and the details they provide (I kinda like the cfa site with the fire details but have only had a quick look at that one as well)
Some things about it's appearance I find kinda irritating but will have to wait and see

We don't exactly have a high crime rate here in Penola but I caught someone coming out of the station and he had already been into at least one car parked outside (nothing taken at least) so I don't know that I would go making such sweeping statements, it might have nothing to do with the area you are in but who is passing by at the time
