The issue of taking pics at incidents came up at a group meeting in my region recently, where the a group officer stated that they didn't approve of photos being taken at incidents, and that they had been told by a coroner that photos of mva's were a definite no go in the eyes of the coroner. Now i'm one who likes to take a fair amount of photos, at training, on strike teams, etc, and i've found that they do come in very handy for training purposes and for those members who didn't make the call. I always make the effort to try and take respectful photos if there are deceased involved. (ie - no recognisable features or gory stuff) Does anyone know if there is a COSO or SOP regarding photo taking?

I'm with you there PumpRescue, CFS management (or some of it) is full of it. I heard from reliable sources a year ago that a replacement appliance was on the way to replace our ageing 2-4, and a year later.... nothing. And secondly, when talking to a Regional Officer not long ago about getting a 2/3-4P to help in dealing with the multiple B risks in our area instead of a 2/3-4, i was told that it wasn't an option because we don't have any boosters to use it with. While i concede that this is true at the moment, i also see that it will occur soon on at least one site, and at the moment i am looking at the other options a 2/3-4P gives us - Clark mast for better lighting, user friendly BA mounts, Dual cab, blah blah blah blah etc, oh and by the way - an underweight truck that doesn't lean to one side and is safe to drive and doesn't need repair work every two months, and that the crew have confidence and feel safe in. Oh and by the way, how about making the region spares a bit more up to the task of being used as a spare appliance instead of being the disgraceful looking, and fitted out, and equipped, pieces of turd that they are.

Anyway i've had my whinge and i'm happier now.

I believe that you will see these courses being available or having RPL availability in the not too distant future. That's the word from inside the STC offices.

PUAFIR309A - Operate pumps
PUAFIR206A - Check installed fire safety systems
PUAFIR302A - Suppress urban fire

Fire Fighter Training / Re: BFF1

As a T/A it never ceases to amaze me how much people will whinge and gripe about things. BF1 is designed to give you basic skills in all areas so that you have an understanding of all areas of CFS duties. So get over it and just do the course. Everybody complains about having to do induction at a new job or OH+S training on a regular basis, but you still do it don't you??
I admit that i don't agree totally on the format of the BF1 course, however, changes ARE being made at the moment, and it will remain to be seen wether things improve from a content point of view or not. In regards to length of course, i'm afraid that you're just going to have to grin and bear it. In the long run it looks like it's going to get longer, but with more pre-course work to do before attending the course proper. Personally i have co-ordinated and instructed on several courses in the past couple of years and not heard one complaint from the students (apart from the obvious mistakes - driptorch fuel ratio etc,) Get some decent engaging instructors with charisma on your courses and the students will love doing the course. Maybe it's just the case that all you old hands have the problem with course. How about you stop complaining, and start embracing the ideas and the efforts that are put into providing better skills to new members and a better service to the community.

Anyway, didn't mean to offend anyone just got a bit carried away etc.
I hate people being critical, and not actual being helpful. :-)

PS. I think that the Tatra looks pretty good, needs a decent bullbar, some driving lights and other mods. But lets face it, anything that can hold its own in the Paris-Dakar rally absolutely shits all over anything that the CFS currently has.
I'd take one at my brigade any day.

I've just read this thread from start to finish, and I don't know guys, it seems to me that you lot should be running SAFECOM and not the other way around. lol  :-D

I will say that from what i've heard from a couple of Burnside members, that your current truck is pretty well stuffed. How long is it going to be 'til you get your new truck?

Country Fire Service / Re: Brigade Elections
« on: February 28, 2008, 10:32:05 AM »
At one of our elections we voted a member in as an equipment officer and senior FF in their abscence. They had expressed interest in the jobs before the meeting, and on the night the member was called up on the phone, confirmed their interest, and everybody voted on it.
I personally think that if a majority agree and vote on something then it is in essence 'constitutional' because the majority agreed at the vote. I don't believe that a piece of paper and written 'rules' should always be taken so literally. If everybody is happy then what's the problem. - Don't know if that helps you though. :?

I think that basing rego/esl on training attendance is probably a more efficient way of judging whether someone qualifies. Being efficiently trained and maintaining that level of training to CFS standards should be enough. An alternative would be just to have the Captain or Admin officer sign off that the member is active and attends 'enough CFS activites' to qualify.

Congratulations Senior Firie you just confirmed that 50% of the last intake was in some way connected to the MFS. 5 ex-retained and 2 who had fathers in the service. Out of the hundreds of applicants that applied do you think this represents a fair percentage of the cross section of the community that applied? Of course not. Nice try at pleading the MFS's case though.

Country Fire Service / Re: Should CFS be Paid For COQ?
« on: March 02, 2007, 10:03:53 PM »
I think it's quite simple, at the end of the financial year (or other agreed time) Safecom pays you for your effort. this keeps admin costs down. if you don't want the money donate it back or donate it to your station. That way i'm not out of pocket, and you stalwarts of the negativity will be happy with yourselves for not accepting the cash!!!
We all have our opinion on the subject, and we could go on forever. Let's agree to disagree and move on. Next topic?

I don't think it's just an MFS thing? I think it's to do with all super and certain ages but i'm not sure. A couple of Mets guys i know mentioned that when the super changes take effect that a lot of old guys are gonna leave or retire, rather than stay and cop the super penalty.

Yeah we were told to strip our old truck when we got our new truck too, and all the cabling and mounts were pre-done when we changed the GRN over, so yeah it only took a couple of minutes. As for there being no more MTS2000's, i got a brand new one back a couple of months ago when i had one repaired. Also i heard that roll-out for the digital un-encrypted system is more like 2011?

Bring on the SAFS where everybody gets paid for their time and effort, everybody has the same color truck, same gear, same training, same qualifications, same admin, same.....
And its all one big happy family.
Yeah right. LOL

To be successful with getting accred/RPL you should get a copy of all the learning outcomes and competencies within the certificate that your going for and then address each one and show where in your current certificates course this was the same or better than what is required on the cert you are going for. Of course if your cert is too old then you will run into problems with proving that you are still competent. Its all a big pain in the backside, and i recommend just doing another course. It's usually easier and you end up doing less work. Personal exp was that i ran into all sorts of problems trying to get RPL when joining the CFS from interstate, and i didn't really see what the problem was until i did a Workplace Assessor course and everything became crystal clear.

The Mets are expecting a lot of the older guys to leave when the super changes come into effect. If they stay in then they end up losing money on their super, so the word is that there are going to be a few retirements in July, added to this the new stations and your usual leavers..... = quite a few empty places?
