The Death Zone? A lot of MVAs or poor coverage?

There was a double degree offered a few years ago, but it is no longer around. You can do the fast track program which I was going to do, but tbh its getting very hard to get into the Paramed degree, so I want to get into it ASAP and then I can come back and finish my nursing later.

Also, I don't think that 'life experience' has much to do with it. Life experience is not something that is quantitative and just comes with age. I have far more 'life experience' than many people my own age and probably older. It would be wrong to assume that younger people don't have any 'life experience' purely based on their age.

The other day while I was driving to uni down Belair Rd I saw a black VE Calais with grill and dash LEDs and a guy in SAAS greens driving it. It did not have any ambulance markings. I've never seen it before, let alone any coloured SAAS cars. What could it be?

As far as I am aware, it is getting harder to get an internship and a job at the end of the degree in SA.

I too am trying to get into the Paramedic degree, I am currently an undergraduate Nursing student at Flinders and I work at a major metropolitan hospital. I feel I should be in good stead to get a position pending I get into the degree, but that's not to say I will! I suppose I really hope I do! haha.

I am sure some of the guys who actually work in SAAS will provide better information than I can anyway.

Women of the Fire Industry / Re: Women in Combat

"I heard their periods attract bears. They can smell then menstruation!"

That's from the Will Ferrell movie Anchorman in case anyone was wondering, just a joke.

On a serious note this really stems back to a sociological issue which basically stereotyped men and women. Women were carers and looking after everyone where the men did the high risk work.

Lately this has been changing, for good and bad. For good: the acceptance of women in high ranking corporate roles, the fire and other emergency services, media and many other positions. This is mostly due to the world wars where women had to take over the dangerous work roles because the men were off fighting and this proved that women are far more capable than what they had been secluded too.

For bad: in the last few years there has been an increase in the number of females killed on the roads while the male toll has been decreasing. The number of female prisoners is increasing. The incidence if alcohol related crime is skyrocketing (around 40% of people detained by SAPOL are under the influcence), esepecially in young women/girls where violent crime has doubled. Men are still worse in all these areas, but it is interesting to see this increase in women.

To me, this might be an indicator of what's to come. I think the gendered stereotypes and 'sexual division of labour' is starting to fade away and men and women are becoming more alike.

SAAS / Other emergency ambulance service?

I have seen (twice now) a white Sprinter that has Rescue Ambulance written on it (red and yellow livery) with red/red roof lights and the wording about mine maritime industrial rescue on the rear quarters.

Who is this company? Are they allowed to have red lights since that is an emergency vehicle colour?

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't the theory of lights and sirens to signal other drivers to move out the way and to allow emergency vehicles right of passage through intersections etc and not to drive fast. In the above scenario, could the crew still stick to the speed limit and use lights and sirens to clear traffic? I have seen SAAS do this many times, for example it's late night and there are few cars on the road, so they might do just above the speed limit with just the lights on and use the siren through intersections.

There are a lot of reasons to get rid of the diploma. The biggest one I can think of is professional recognition and wages. When you have degrees you can have things like ACAP too.

Obviously the diploma would have had it's advantages too.

I have not seen the bike, heard about it though. A friend saw one on the road. Any pics? It truly is a huge truck, especially when you see it next to the SOT truck which is the size of a normal Amb. I drove past MedSTAR to have a look at it and it is HUGE. Would be cool to see it next to the MFS one.

That is probably a good idea because transfers do make up a lot of the vollies work. Sometimes these volunteer crews get stuck in the city. For example, all the volunteer stations apart from Strath were stuck in the city one day and they had to cover from Mt Barker to Goolwa.

So what would a Paramedic Intern be looking at?

And what roles are you guys in? ICP?

It's good to find all this info out, thanks for the help. I just got to hope I get into the degree!
