Country Fire Service / Re: Foam for the CFS

Spoken with a friend who is a ROPO and I can confirm nothing is changing with B class foam. Only certain stuff should be handed in as per my comment above.

Everyone noticed their is a new PID plus MFS took delivery of 5 new pumpers so they should have some available for training. I guess it comes back to funding, the number of retirements and trainers available.

I would say just the rumour mill at work again. In Nuriootpa there is over a million litres of ethonal stored so CFS can't just stop supplying it. Some B class foam was recalled recently as it was found to have an increased cancer risk from it but I'm not aware of it not being supplied anymore.

Country Fire Service / Re: Barker Rescue stepdown???
« on: June 04, 2014, 05:31:52 PM »
It won't happen over night but yes places like Mount Barker and Nurioopta where a fully time crew would be beneficial backed up by volunteers for the large incidents that require numbers on the ground e.g. Bushfires, floods, earthquakes, large structure or hazmat incidents. People who say volunteers and career crews together under one roof doesn't work may need an ego check, it does work if everyone works as a team and if the extras like training, equipment, admin are looked after by the career crews but yet career crews are their training and trying to interact with the volunteers the one service system works.

All Equipment discussion / New CFS Uniforms
« on: March 28, 2014, 10:02:47 PM »
So our cadets received the new proper yellows (or should I say oranges hehe) a couple months ago that CFS designed and asked for (Not that press stud carp that opens itself up while on the fire ground and massive neck flaps that exposes your neck to easily get burnt) but of course cadets don't go on fire grounds so we haven't been able to put it to the test.

Has anyone received the brand new stuff and is it living up to what we asked for? e.g. fits crew leader folders in jacket pockets easy? Haven't damaged the centre jacket zip yet as it does appear to be smaller then what was on the previous gear? What are your thoughts?

I am totally behind you, CFS is a professional emergency service even if we are volunteers and everyone in CFS needs to remember that, ok some brigades may feel free to cover burn offs but after all we are all accountable to the chief officer and the South Australian community hence as we are volunteers of the CFS we MUST follow Chief Officers Standing Orders at ALL times.

Ok your community may accept the local CFS does favours but what about the great SA community and if someone does in an emergency and the SA community finds out oh hang on the local CFS were out looking out for themselves, we all know how bad the press can be sometimes then try and explain that to the Regional and Chief Officer.

Besides the swim test has anyone been able to find out if AirServices have any further swimming testing or training?

One thing is don't get your hopes down, last year I did the testing and a week after you had to do it I was emailed sorry you were unsuccessful then two weeks later they called me up to book a phone interview, when I asked why I was back in the recruitment process they said the previous applicants were not what they were after.

I don't know about MFS but the online testing had a couple of short stories you had to read like Mike works for a clothing store and has sold 20 red shirts, 15 blue shirts, 10 yellow shirts and 5 greens shirts and the question would be something like out of the information above which would show greatest potential for future growth. This isn't a real question but was the best example I could think of off the top of my head, I thought they were a bit silly as they had nothing really fire related.

The personality profiling questions were good especially if you had previous CFS or SES experience as they asked questions like if you had a new crew member in your team and you were responding to a first aid emergency and they were feeling under confident in their skills yet they operated well under the situation how would you boost their confidence:
A) raise it in the truck on the way back to the station and congratulate them on how well they did?
B) Quietly say something when back at station to the individual on how well they did, Or
C) Mention it to your senior ranking officer they were feeling under confident on their skill however they operated to standard.

Justme the phone interview is really casual, I applied for Perth late last year but had to withdraw from selection, they ask roughly a dozen questions like have you worked in a team and what examples can you provide, have you had to follow orders and have you had to question those orders.

Their is a face to face interview later in the process when you do a medical.
