SAAS / SAAS MDT's
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:31:14 PM »
So I'm hearing a lot less radio traffic from SAAS with the introduction of the mobile data terminals. Wondering whether anyone has used one, or knows someone who has, and what their thoughts are about them?

My understanding is that info, warnings and all remarks are basically relayed to the mdt - seems a good idea.

Any thoughts?

Country Fire Service / Adelaide Now Survey
« on: November 15, 2012, 05:44:17 PM »
For those who are interested, Adelaide Now has set up a survey after the commencement of fire danger season in the Mid North, Murraylands, Riverland, Upper South East and Yorke Peninsula

The survey asks questions such as; should it be compulsory for homeowners to clean up before fire danger season and, another question which may raise some debate, should CFS firefighters be paid? I presume based on the MFS retain model.

So I thought I throw this survey out into the open and allow for you guys and gals to raise some debate about some of the questions - especially the paid question

For those interested in completing the survey, here it is below

SAAS / ECP Model to be rolled out on Limestone Coast
« on: October 21, 2012, 10:13:38 AM »
I found this interesting, but should be a good idea with the growing population on the Limestone Coast. I believe they will be based in Mt Gambier

LIMESTONE Coast paramedics are trialling a program intended to reduce the strain on medical services.

Three of the region’s experienced paramedics are undertaking specialist training so they can treat people suffering from non-urgent health complaints in their own homes.

Instead of arriving in a traditional ambulance, two of the specialist paramedics - known as extended care paramedics (ECP) - will arrive at the scene in a four-wheel-drive equipped to provide more than just emergency care.

While the vehicle will not be able to transport a patient to hospital, it will be stocked with supplies such as antibiotics, catheters and blood testing equipment.

Limestone Coast ambulance operations manager Andrew Thomas told The Border Watch he was hopeful this would prevent people who were suffering from low-acuity health complaints being taken to hospital unnecessarily.

“It’s a more community-based approach, and it’s been about three years in the making,” he said.

Mr Thomas said an example of the service could be somebody with a urinary infection who would ordinarily have to call an ambulance to access medical help being administered the appropriate antibiotic by an ECP.

The specialist paramedic would then write a care plan - to be shared with the patient’s usual GP and existing health providers such as aged care workers - to thoroughly tackle the issue and try to keep the patient in their home for longer.

“A traditional ambulance is usually at somebody’s house for 20 to 30 minutes ... these guys might be at a person’s house for up to two hours,” Mr Thomas said.

If the situation turned out to be serious enough to warrant a trip to the hospital, Mr Thomas said the specialist paramedics could always call for an emergency ambulance.

“It’s not replacing anyone - it’s filling in the gaps and providing extra clinical pathways for patients in country areas,” he said.

The pilot program will be tested in the Limestone Coast over 18 months, starting from the end of the year,

and will be regularly reviewed.

The initiative was made possible by the region’s successful funding application to Health Workforce Australia, which resulted in a previously reported $630,000 federal grant to extend the scope of its workforce.

Experienced intensive care paramedic David Dewar is one of the three South East men training to become an ECP.

He said he was excited by the program because it could give people with non-emergency conditions an option other than an ambulance or the hospital’s accident and emergency service.

“We might be able to avoid unnecessary long-distance transfers to the hospital, free-up emergency ambulance services and reduce the impact on our South East ambulance volunteers,” Mr Dewar said.

“It could also take the pressure off the emergency department at the hospital because we can divert patients away from there.”

SAAS / Volunteer Shift Work
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:09:18 PM »
Hi all,

Just after some information.

I understand all volunteer stations would run different systems of rostering, but would anyone know how rostering of volunteers work in some stations. Take Strath for a example, a busier station, do they roster people of from 8:00am to 6:00pm or are shifts divided into time slots

Thanks

SAMFS / SAMFS Work Experience
« on: February 26, 2012, 12:37:31 PM »
Hi all,

I was looking for some information or possible contacts. I am doing my year 11 studies at the moment and looking for work experience for mid June this year. My initial preference was hospitals and the ambulance, but most are full or unable to do this due to the privacy act. My second interest is the SAMFS or CFS. I sent an email this afternoon, however, does anyone know if the MFS or CFS HQ do work experience, ie comms work ect.

Dont hesitate to send me a pm too.

Cheers

SAAS / SAAS Pain Relief in the Country
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:31:44 AM »
Hi all,

This was an issue raised about six years ago regarding the use of medicine to help patients with pain relief. The main issue was that paramedics were prohibited from administering morphine; in turn being forced to use penthrane - a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

Hopefully this issue has been resolved (I dont know whether it has), and paramedics are able to administer sufficient pain relief in the country without having to wait for an LMO or an IC.

This leads to my last question: Should volunteers with advanced training be able to administer better pain relief in country areas if no IC, paramedic (if the use of morphine has been allowed) or LMO is available?

Would love to here your thoughts - especially volunteers

SAAS / SAAS Team Leaders
« on: July 01, 2011, 05:42:54 PM »
Hi

Just doing some research and I was wondering whether anyone would be able to give me some info on the team leaders. There are CTL's, RTL's, VTL's, MPS. Where do they decide to place a VTL/RTL what training do you need. Also are there CTL's that operate in places like Mt Barker and fringe metro areas? What are there call signs and where are they? Plus call signs like FP1; is that a team leader or spare.

Thanks, sorry for my lack of understanding of these terms and jobs.

Hypotheticals / SOP for a 3rd alarm Commercial Fire in Renmark
« on: May 31, 2011, 10:00:04 AM »
What would be the 1st alarm response appliances to a pager message like this (ie Tanker ect):

MFS:*CFRES INC45 31/5/11 13:21,RESPOND COMMERCIAL FIRE, RAL RAL AVENUE,RENMARK MAP 0 0 0 TG193,RENMARK HOSPITAL,MULITPLE CALLS.,REN618

***this is not a real pager message***

What would be the 2nd Alarm response appliances and the 3rd Alarm response appliances. Who would be most likely to go COQ (and to which station). And lastly at what response (1st alarm, 2nd or 3rd) would you introduce the D/O into the thick of things.

***If you're wondering why this thread was put up it is because i'm researching the MFS for a school project and I want to include the differences between regional responses and metro responses***

SA Firefighter General / MedSTAR and SOT paging
« on: November 28, 2010, 05:03:42 PM »
Would anybody be able to explain to me why MedSTAR is not seen on the online pagers. You can always here radio contact between them and comms but when there are incidents requiring the chopper, MedSTAR are not paged (only CFS or SES to prepare landing ground). And also, SOT are not paged for general messages and net calls test pages.  :?

SAAS / SAAS Rescue Paramedics
« on: November 09, 2010, 03:50:59 PM »
Been tracking around the city this morning and I saw a paramedic walking into the Wakefield Station. What I found interesting is that on his back it said "Rescue Paramedic". Are they the SOT's? Also he was not in an SOT vehicle, normal Emergency Ambulance.
