SA Firefighter General / Emergency HD game on Andriod and Apple Devices
« on: January 09, 2014, 02:26:56 PM »
G'day everyone gee its been a while in between drinks since i actually last posted a new topic  :-P anyways for all of those who may remember the PC game Fire Department shortly before christmas i went out and placed an ipad mini on my radio rentals account as a present to myself

Anyways after a couple of days of getting use to the mini version of ipad i came across an interesting app called Emergency HD much to my surprise after downloading its an exact similar version to the game i had on the old computer years ago

It has 12 missions from a car vs train to a zepplin air ship crash/fire and even an Alien Invasion as the bonus mission and theres an add on for an additional 99 cents im currently trying to complete the 2nd level on the add on as its tricky

So if you are looking for an interesting game you cant go past Emergency HD it also in a way doubles as a perfect training game too

OFF Topic / Storm Chasers Final Episode Next Wednesday Night
« on: March 04, 2009, 08:09:51 PM »
For all of those who have been watching Storm Chasers on Austar or Foxtel the final episode is next Wednesday night due to it being the final day of chase season

Tonights episode was pretty good and hair raising when Josh and the DOW lost radio contact with the scout and TIV for a short period of time due to the teams being caught in the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraught)but missing out on intercepting a tornado cause of no radio contact with the DOW

Next week is building up to be exciting according to the episode preview cause not only does the scout,probe and TIV team get caught in the path of a twister but Reed's team also does too  :-D

Is anyone else watching it

Other Government Agencies / Summer Crew Jobs 2008/2009 Fire Season
« on: August 04, 2008, 10:56:14 AM »
Ok Ok i know im getting into that habit of posting this topic around the same time every year  :roll:

Anyways seeing as how the year has already gone past us real fast :-o and with the fire season just 3 months away its time to ask that question of which company everyone is going to try and get a summer crew job with this season... seeing as how im posting the topic let me open the floor  :-P

After narrowly missing out on numerous summer crew jobs last season im back at it again this season coming but now have the addition of my full certificate 2 in Conservation And Land Management of which i have almost completed at TAFE SA Mount Gambier campus

The bonus part about the full cert 2 in CLM (Conservation&Land Management)is that one of the units is operate and maintain chainsaws of which is safe to say i've successfully completed having passed the practical on the 03/08/2008

Heres a list of companies i am going to try and get into for this season

* Integrated Tree Cropping
* Auspine Forestry
* Hancock Victorian Plantations
* Forestry SA
* Green Triangle Forest Products
* National Parks & Wildlife (DEH)
* DSE Victoria

Now its everyone elses turn  :-)

Oh yeah the chainsaw i had to operate and maintain during the unit was an ECHO and believe me that chainsaw had alot of grunt and i dont mean it grunted like a pig does  :lol:

Heya everyone this has been playing on my mind for a while now as its happened quite a few times with my brigade's station siren.... everytime theres a short power failure of anywhere between 5 seconds-1 minute the station siren goes off as soon as the power comes back on

We had a small backup battery hooked up so in the event of a power failure the battery would serve as a temp emergency supply but it goes flat until someone either gets it repacked or replaced

Is there a way to get the pagers activated whenever there is a power failure so someone can respond to the station and isolate the siren so it doesnt go off once power is restored as well as to go off when the power comes back on and the siren is going as result of the power failure

I know for a fact most brigades in the Adelaide area have their pagers activated when the power goes off at their station then comes back on setting off the siren automatically.... how does my brigade go about getting this arranged  :?

SA Firefighter General / Online Fire Fighting Game
« on: May 10, 2008, 03:42:22 PM »
Heya everyone while browsing the net for online games to play out of sheer boredom i stumbled across this online game called Fire Boss where you are incharge of dispatching fire crews to a fire in a forest reserve and have to prevent it from invading a camping ground and getting into grass land

I had fun playing this game and its a real challenge as the main aim is to build fire breaks around it to stop the fire from getting any worse  :-)

This is the website link to play the game and whats even better is that you can download it onto your own computer and play it offline  :-D

Enjoy

Hypotheticals / Multiple fires caused by a dry lightning storm
« on: November 28, 2006, 08:36:05 PM »
Ok everyone heres another hypothetical for you

Time:11:00am

A band of slow moving dry lightning storms move across the state now while the majority of strikes are cloud-cloud half a dozen manage to reach the ground and start fires in more than one spot

There is significant fire already occurring in scrub land just outside of Mount Gambier at the time of this dry lightning storm with crews already committed to the fire there is a shortage of brigades to respond to reported lightning strikes

However despite a shortage in brigades there are farm units & private forest company units who arent involved with this available for dispatch to the lightning strikes

These private forest companies are

G&R
Moreland Holdings
Dohnts
Tabeel Trading
Mc Donald logging
Woakwine
ITC
Timbercorp
Green Triangle Forest Products

Each of these companies have their own fire crews..... since there are multiple lightning strike fires in Kalangadoo,Beachport,Penola and outside of Mount Gambier close to SEAC park where you would dispatch each forest company too

Also as an added bonus you have assistance of a water bomber and several farm units so take that into account

OFF Topic / New CAMS grades & categories unveiled
« on: November 28, 2006, 02:12:48 PM »
This might be something of interest to all users on this site who are CAMS officials  :-)

According to an article in this months edition of CAMS magazine the National Officiating Program Review (NOPR)has unveiled new grades & categories to replace the current ones

Trainee-Trainee
Grade 4-General Official
New -Club Chief
Grade 3-Bronze
Grade 2-Silver
Grade 1-Gold

In other words if you have a E4 licence you'll no longer be classed as a Grade 4 Official as this has been updated so E4 officials are classified as a General Official

All E3 licence holders will be classed as Bronze Officials and are capable of officiating as chiefs up to and including state level events as well as

*Assuming a team leader role and taking responsibility for other officials

* Officiating without supervision and ;

* Acting as a General Official at any level event

Im in the process of going about upgrading my General Officials licence to a Bronze Officials licence all i gotta do is fill out a Fire & Rescue RPL/CE form get a written reference from a SEAC senior official about my fire & rescue duties as well as fill out an upgrade licence form before sending it away

What is everyone else's thoughts in on it

Other Government Agencies / Summer Crew Jobs
« on: August 26, 2006, 01:11:11 PM »
Hiya everyone i decided to introduce this topic to answer Jono's question in his topic from what i have read in today's Career One section of the Advertiser, Forestry SA Crawford are now seeking people to fill Summer Crew positons for the 06-07 fire season at the following depots Kupito,Brookman Road,Mount Crawford,Warren Road and Williamstown forest depots

Anyone on this site who lives up that way or near it and is interested in doing summer crew work for Forestry SA can call 08 87 24 28 04 to get an application form and information sheet posted out to them but remember to do it this week as the applications close on the 08/09/2006 at 5:00pm

For everyone else who would rather do summer crew work somewhere else such as in Victoria the Department Of Sustainability and Environment are after people to fill summer crew positions for the 06-07 fire season there all you need to do is call DSE Victoria and get an info pack sent out to you  :-D

I have already rung up and expecting an info pack/application form in the mail some time early this week coming... i can tell you this the DSE summer fire crew jobs offers good pay  :wink:

Hiya everyone its me i figured that now would be a good time to get everyones thoughts and views on yesterday's weather conditions which caused a few burn offs to go all haywire and get out of control resulting in brigades being dispatched

Down here in Region 5 the winds along with something else were not quite sure what it was  :? started a scrub fire just 1 km up the Wandilo road coming off Kalangadoo-Glencoe road which resulted in Kalangadoo,Millicent,Mount Burr,Glencoe,Tantanoola,Wandilo and the Mount Gambier Forestry Depot being dispatched

Did anyone else get called out yesterday to anything that the winds caused

Hiya everyone since I'm so bored today due to having nothing to do i figured it would be the best time to bring up another topic to add to my number of postings on this site

Its not often that you hear on the news or see in a newspaper about CB or Amateur Radio being used during large scale incidents but these types of radios are often operated by operations support or organizations like WICEN,ACREM,ACBRO behind the scenes of an incident

27 MHz,HF,Amateur & UHF CB Radio are radio systems that would come very much in handy should our SAGRN & VHF Fire Ground radios fail in a major disaster like a big rural fire

What is everyone else's thoughts on this topic

Other Government Agencies / EMS Ambulance Service in South Australia
« on: April 08, 2006, 06:02:12 PM »
Hiya everyone i think its about time we visit the topic of other emergency services that are never mentioned on tv or seen at incidents

A couple months ago i managed to watch a little bit on A Current Affair about an Ambulance Service which is called EMS and its kinda like SAAS community first responders with the first response to medical emergencies

Last Year when i went to Adelaide i can recall my bus went by a medical center and it had Private Emergency Service sign on its front wall with a depot underneath of it

Any thoughts on this as I'm stumped completely and need someone to shed some light on it

SA Firefighter General / Ash Wednesday Memorial Services
« on: February 15, 2006, 08:16:52 PM »
Hiya everyone this topic is a special one for tomorrows memorial of 1983 fires

Like every other year i have the sacred duty as a 3rd generation fire fighter to raise the Kalangadoo CFS flag halfmast and lay flowers on the memorial plaque to remember the residents of Kalanagdoo who got taken by these fires :cry:

Of course ill be doing it around 6-6:30 am tomorrow morning and to a tribute song titled The Time Has Come this is off one of my Pokemon CD's... there are time i wish that it could have been used at the last 1983 memorial service Kalangadoo had a few years ago

25
This topic has been in the back of my head for a while now and i figured it would be best to talk about it....In my primary school days passing by the front office to go into the library on a hot day i used to hear CFS radio traffic coming from the little handheld scanner mounted inside the office

This little handheld scanner was eventually replaced courtesy of the Kalangadoo Country Fire Service with a 16 channel desktop scanner so Kalangdoo Primary School staff could monitor CFS Radio Traffic, and in the event of a major fire happening they decide if it's wise to send out of town students home on the bus or not

A classic example of the Kalangadoo Primary School scanner being used for emergency decision making was the Kalangadoo-Glencoe Road fire a few years back,on hearing that the fire was running rampant school staff did not allow the school bus to take out of town students home until the fire was contained

What i am getting at is every rural kindergarten,primary & high school that are in a real high bushfire prone area such as Kalangadoo should be issued with a handheld or desktop scanner programmed with GRN & CFS VHF frequencies so the staff can montior all emergency traffic during a major fire

What are your thoughts on this issue  :-)
