All Equipment discussion / Re: New 14
« on: October 21, 2005, 10:37:42 PM »
I think that one of those new CFS Rural Light Tray 14 QA vehicles would be a big benefit for Kalangadoo CFS as all of our callouts during fire season/summer are to grass, scrub, haystack and forest fires

By having a Light Rural Tray 14 unit to co-inside with our current 34 appliance Kalangadoo brigade volunteers such as myself who dont have a MR licence and turn up first on reciept of a pager call can respond and first and try to knock the fire down then call for Kalangadoo 34 as back up

it was a pretty intresting job as every man and his dog rocked up shortly after Kalangadoo 34 with myself and my mum as the OIC's until one of the Wattle Range Deputies arrived on scene

When i mean by every man & his dog we had Glencoe 34,SAAS,SAPOL,SAPOL highway patrol,SASES from Mount Gambier and local landowners from around Kalangadoo

We had a big obstacle while responding to this truck rollover as the fog was so thick you could use a knife to cut it, of course this was my first or second time as 2nd OIC of Kalangadoo 34

But unfortunatley our brigade very rarely gets called to RCR's as first response only when fire cover is required for an RCR crew who is doing extraction

Country Fire Service / Re: Experience markings
« on: October 18, 2005, 07:28:11 PM »
Kalangadoo used to have the qualification patches such as RCR, BA and First Aid sown on the overalls but after Millicent and Penola groups merged to be now know as Wattle Range Divsion and for safety reasons the issuing of patches that signify what your qualifications are were discontinued

It's a real shame as that very year when the patch issuing was stopped i attained my Senior First Aid certificate while doing Youth Conservation Corps training

I think that they should bring back the experience markings as I've been a senior first aid officer for 3 years having just gained me re- accreditation while doing Green Corps earlier this year

Plus it would prevent confusion if a brigade say for example Kalangadoo was paged to an RCR and first aid officers were appointed to treat the patients prior to SAAS arrival, having experience markings which say that the first aid officer or officers have first aid training the patches would give paramedics a clear idea when they arrive that the first aiders have training in first aid

Kalangadoo 34 was paged to a interesting and very unusal RCR early-mid last year, our initial pager message said it was an RCR on the Kalangadoo-Glencoe road turn off no entrapments

Not brag or anything but the person who reported this accident to 000 also called his mother who is my parents family friend she called our home phone and told my dad about this accident

After getting dressed I was halfway out to the incident in my car when the pager sounded resulting in me doing a quick U-Turn to respond but despite being halfway out of town on receipt of this pager message i some how was the first person down at Kalangadoo base

On arrival to the incident we seen a semi trailer truck which was carrying crates of apples rested on it's side in a paddock with apples scattered out among broken crates... of course the upside to this was that i got a free breakfast of fresh unbruised apples

You are very right kat i have been a senior fire fighter with Kalangadoo for 6 years this December and at the last brigade election i was nominated for 3rd lieutenant & Bushfire prevention officer but was pipped out by volunteers who are on the captains good books

Hopefully next year we'll have a new captain and I'll become either 3rd lieutenant or equipment officer as I've been trying to get these 2 postions as well as Bushfire prevention officer for the last 2 1/2 years

My name is Robert and I have been a member of the Kalangadoo SA Country Fire Service for 10 years in December....ever since becoming a Senior Fire Fighter in 2000 i've been to a handful of grass/scrub fires one of them being the Kalangadoo-Glencoe Road grassfire in 2001.2 house fires, between 5-10 Industrial Fires including the memorable Carter Holt Harvey Nangwarry mill fire a couple of years ago where i was 2nd in command of the Kalangadoo 34 crew despite being only 19

I've also been to 2 RCR's non entrapment,1 Land Search and 4 strike Team Requests one of them being the Monbulla Grass Fire also a couple years ago

To date i have my level 1&2 certificates, SAGRN Operators certificate, Senior First Aid and a Emergency Response Warden Statement of Attainment Certificate as well

My interest of becoming a fire fighter was brought on by my father who is the only active member of the original Kalangadoo 44 crew that fought the 1983 Ash Wednesday Fires... being an active member of the SACFS was my strong point during High School as i was given A& A+ nearly every semester in Community Studies because my teacher then is a current active member of the CFS as well

However i am still waiting for the chance to be apart of a CFS deployment crew to go and fight fires interstate

Country Fire Service / Re: Deployment Uniforms
« on: October 15, 2005, 08:56:18 PM »
During my 9 1/2 - 10 years service with the SA Country Fire Service i missed out twice being deployed to fight fires in NSW&VIC because the fire fighters from Wattle Range Division who had been there and done that before got first preference

Still i think that deployment uniforms are a good idea for South Australian fire fighters who respond to fires interstate as every state fire service wears the same yellow overalls so by having deployment overalls of a different colour would prevent confusion

I'm very much hoping that the Lower South East doesn't get attacked by a
Black Tuesday style wildfire this coming fire season... however should a fire like Black Tuesday occur in the LSE lessons learned from Ash Wednesday & Eyre Peninsula will help South East fire crews avert another tragic bushfire from happening

I agree CaptCom because you seen the horror/nightmare of Black Tuesday being on the frontline when it ripped through Eyre Peninsula showing no mercy in January this year

But still i think that those people who were taken tragically by the fire could have saved their lives by having a bushfire action plan like many South Australian families have

Then again you're right about the misinformation factor that happened during and after the Black Tuesday fires...like i said in my earlier post the fire was very much unstoppable because of the fire weather factor on that particular day

All you have to do rescue5271 is give LITA Recruitment Services a call at their training office in Mount Gambier and find out when the next 2 day chainsaw course is being held

If you read this reply sometime early this afternoon around about about lunch time or 1:00pm you might be lucky enough to get into the chainsaw course which is being held Wednesday & Thursday

Here are the details for this weeks chainsaw course

Dates of course: 12-13/10/2005
Location: LITA Recruitment Services training office
Time: 8:30 am-4:00pm
Cost: $200.00
Contact number:87 35 14 74

I'm not saying that you wont get into the 2 day chainsaw course being held this week rescue5271 but if you're unsuccessful just ask them when the next course is being held and they will put you own on the list

Ok $200.00 may sound like a fair bit of money just to get a ticket but if i am going to get my brigade issued with a chainsaw this is the only to do it

I agree strikeathird but whenever our brigade asks about when were going to get a new truck the GO or DGO say were on the high priority list to get a new or refurnished 34 appliance

Plus if Kalangadoo were given a Rural Light Tray 14 Quick Attack unit the brigade members such as myself who dont have a MR licene and turn up first to the station for a fire call would be able to respond first and give a sitrep on arrival to the scene as well as do fire supression

Other Government Agencies / Re: What the SES does
« on: October 10, 2005, 02:03:11 PM »
The SES does all those tasks but it's very hard to get into the State Emergency Service if you live 20-25 mintues away from one as i've tried to join the SES during winter but have had my applications rejected because of response time from Kalangadoo to Millicent

Im hoping that my latest letter to the SES gets me a sub base membership so i can respond to emergencies around the Kalangadoo township which my brigade dont get paged to

That's very true strikeathird we only had 4 callouts last fire season and one of them caught me off guard completely as i had just got home from a busy day putting up fences in Canunda National Park with Green Corps and was just about to take a can of coke out of the fridge when my pager sounded

We could had more callouts had of we've been called to Comaum where that forest fire was or dispatched to help out at Padthaway with their bushfire

Our appliance Kalangadoo 34 is 19 years old as it was given to Kalangadoo brigade in 1986 it is an open back 34 appliance and is the oldest truck in the Wattle Range Division

We have been told that were due for another 34 appliance & a new station maybe next year after the fire season or the year after but i would like to personally see Kalangado get a new 34 appliance as well as a Rural Light Tray 14 quick attack unit too so we can deal with grass fire before they get out of hand

Country Fire Service / Re: You'll Pay, Black Tuesday Victims To Sue CFS
« on: October 08, 2005, 04:14:15 PM »
I understand fully the pain in which Eyre Peninsula residents have suffered because of the Black Tuesday fires that claimed 9 lives but suing the CFS over this fire should have never came about

Before the EP residents decided to sue the SACFS over this tragic fire what should have taken into consideration that they (the Eyre Peninsula residents)might not have been adequately prepared themselves for dangerous bushfire weather ahead on that Tuesday when the fire sprung up

Even though the fire itself was unstoppable good preparation and no fleeing by house owners/residents would have saved many houses from being gutted and burnt to the ground

I think its 50/50 blame factor

SA Firefighter General / Re: Early start to Fire Season
« on: October 07, 2005, 07:49:36 PM »
Basically oz fire the Kalangadoo brigade hasnt done any actual preparations as fire season is normally the 2nd quietest time of year for Kalangadoo CFS if theres not many fire calls but when it does get busy my brigade is always flatout responding to fires

The reason for this is because Kalangadoo brigade has a large response area and is always a first response brigade should a fire occur in grassland on farming properties in or around Kalangadoo township and we also get called to assist Forestry SA with fire supression in forest plantations

While the other Kalangadoo brigade volunteers have been going about their daily routines such as work and not worrying about the upcoming 2005/2006 fire season i undertook a Emergency Response Warden's certificate course up in Adelaide during September to further my currentfire fighting training and learn something new

This week coming i am going for a chainsaw ticket through LITA recruitment services so Kalangadoo CFS can be given a chainsaw to use  for storm damage incidents and cutting fallen trees off of roads even though im the only one who will be allowed to use it the other brigade members will be asking me where i got my ticket from

Country Fire Service / Re: Use of fire sirens
« on: October 03, 2005, 04:10:49 PM »
Even though the Kalangadoo community doesn't show much interest in the Kalangadoo CFS but whenever there is a shortage of crew on a really bad fire danger after the pagers have sounded requiring Kalangadoo 34's response we hit the siren then let to sound continuously until extra crew turn up and plus this catches the attention of town residents

We had to sound the siren mid last year around 8:00-9:00 am because we didnt have driver after several attempts to contact our brigade auxiliary truck drivers failed,we activated the siren and surely enough a truck driver who was the son of one of our brigade auxiliary members answered the siren call and manned the driving seat enabling Kalangadoo 34 to respond. Also i must note that we were called to a truck roll over on this morning none of our drivers failed to turn up after we were paged

Basically what i'm saying is that station sirens are very handy as there will be times when a brigade has a crew but no driver and will need to activate their station siren in a bid to get one regardless if they are a Civilian or Industrial truck drivers it doesnt really matter as long as they have a MR or HR truck licence

Country Fire Service / Re: station numbers again
« on: October 02, 2005, 03:59:42 PM »
I hope that the interfaces are installed at Penola & Millicent bases before the fire season comes along because whenever Kalangadoo is paged myself or other brigade volunteers have to wait for 5 mintues and if no one turns up in that specified time limit we have to set of the siren manually

Plus it would be alot easier once the interface consoles are installed are installed in both Wattle Range Division operation bases so should a limited crew rock up at any station in this division all that is required to set the siren off is a radio call to Wattle Range Base or State Operations

I know this is very well off the subject but does anyone know if the 2005-2006 fire season is going to be very busy just like 2004-2005 fire season was as ive heard that this summer is going to be really hot

1420
Country Fire Service / Re: station numbers again
« on: October 02, 2005, 09:54:51 AM »
But still the days of press button siren activation were very affective as our station siren in Kalangadoo could be heard a long distance... as for the station siren being set off by SOC that has since long gone as Kalangadoo brigade used to have the siren set off by either Penola or Millicent base for fire calls but this system isnt used anymore

Country Fire Service / Re: station numbers again
« on: October 01, 2005, 02:28:19 PM »
What ever happened to the fire phone system i am aware it was decommissioned because running costs but it's alot more better than getting paged by 2 communication centres up in Adelaide for the same incident

Serveral years ago before paging was deemed fashionable by CFS the Kalangadoo brigade had a fire phone number which was 393000,whenever a fire or accident was reported to this station number the call would go to any of the brigade phones and whoever answered would press a button and our station siren would go off automatically ensuring a full crew turnout nearly 100% of the time

As for being paged by MFS or SOC for the same incident is very confusing. Whereas before SAAS communications centre in Mount Gambier was shutdown any fire calls that came through 000 requiring Kalangadoo 34's response were directed to SE Comms as it was known and the SAAS communcations officer in Mount Gambier would page us in the quickest amount of time

Country Fire Service / Re: crew bag's
« on: October 01, 2005, 02:12:04 PM »
The crew bag i have in my car is those ones that are being advertised in the Volunteer Magazine... my fire uniform bag stays in the car 24/7 so in the event of me being first on scene of an accident or fire i am able to suit up while waiting for CFS crews to arrive rather than get my backside kicked by the Group Officer or Deputy Group Officer for not wearing full CFS PPE

Industrial & Private Fire Services / Re: private fire appliances
« on: September 30, 2005, 04:43:19 PM »
A wildfire which happened on the Kalangadoo-Glencoe a few years back was spotted by farmers in that vicinity who responded and restricted it to burning so many paddocks and a hayshed... think about what would have happened if these private fire units were non existent Kalangadoo and Glencoe would have been wiped out by this fire in a matter of hours

I would like to also note that when the call of duty was sent out for CFS fire crews to respond at the same time private fire units from other farms around the district also came to help out therefore proving that in a way these farm fire fighters are the real unsung heroes

Industrial & Private Fire Services / Re: private fire appliances

I'm a fire fighter with the CFS in Kalangadoo and when ever we get a call out to a grass or scrub fire near Kalangadoo there is at least 3 or 4 private fire units already combating the fire prior to our brigades arrival

Private Fire Units are the backbone of the CFS if we didn't have these units our chances of knocking down a real big fire in scrub land shortly after it starts isn't very good regardless of how many brigades are on scene and plus these private 14 units can go some places where normal 34 or 24 CFS trucks cant go
