Country Fire Service / Re: colours
« on: July 19, 2006, 08:46:54 PM »
I read somewhere that white is the best color for fire appliances to stand out in poor visibility/night time etc. The only problem is many fire trucks are red cause its really hard to see white with a backdrop of snow (funny that). So hence the reason many fire appliances are red. But the CFS decided we dont have to worry about snow so we will go with the white.

Some brigades do have pre-requisites before you can stand for certain positions. Salisbury, 2 years in that brigade before you can be a senior, 3 i think for Lieutenant. Training officer has to have some instructing/training qualifications. This might not work for some brigades but is a good concept.

Many cfs stations are located within mfs areas around the state. Thats why the MFS would be called to these type of jobs and not the cfs.

Our station (MFS Mt Gambier) does a minimum of 1 hour per week for station duties, appliance checks and cleaning.

Thats right, samer rules all over the world though. They cant change it just for SA.

Who cares if a lot of calls are alarms. This doesnt mean that most of them are justified calls. The alarm usually activates for a reason. Yeah burnt toast may set it off but it is just doing its job and picking up smoke. A high percentage of MFS calls are alarms too.

SMS can never be relied on during an emergency.Sometimes it takes far too long from when a message is sent to when it is received. Our pagers may not be perfect are pretty reliable in most area of the state.

Country Fire Service / Turnout times
« on: July 09, 2006, 09:24:34 AM »
Some brigades set a benchmark time for appliances to go mobile in a cetain time from paged time. Does many brigades do this? When I was at Salisbury CFS they tried to get the first appliance mobile within 4 minutes of time of call. They monitored this over the course of the year for their own records. This would be difficult to achieve for many brigades due to travelling time of members to station.

Short answer no. If you are a retained firefighter and you get a full time firefighter role with the MFS you have to resign as a retainer. Otherwise they would have to pay you overtime rates for the calls you respond to as a retained firie. Apart from that we need a full complement of retained people as well as the full timers on the books.

good point. Just to say that cos an appliance has been at a quiet brigade and hasnt done many k`s doesnt mean that it can be extended to more than 20 years. That was the whole reason for bringing in this quideline in the first place. Too many rust buckets responding to emergencies in the 80`s and before. One of Woodsides appliances that got replaces last year was 20 years old and the pump/body on it were from an even older one.No wonder it was getting tired. lol

The full timers will only work Mon-Fri 8.30-4.30. Retained people will still respond to jobs as there is only going to be 1 crew of full timers. Outside of these hours and on public holidays will just be the retainers.

Country Fire Service / CFS replacement appliances
« on: July 08, 2006, 03:59:59 PM »
Wonder if anyone has dont the math on how much it will cost to replace all of the CFS appliances that are going to celebrate their 20th birthdays and beyond over the next 4 years or so. The appliances that are being built now are replacing the last of the `home built` custom appliances that were made pre-standard days and the rear entry Hino trucks. But diring the late 80`s the CFA built a heap of the Hino appliances 24/34 some orders were up to 90 at a time. It is going to costbig money to replace all these and a special budget allocation will be needed. Maybe someone in their wisdom will just say bugger it make the limit 25 years. Some of the appliances wont last that long.

With the huge number of BA cylinders the CFS has there is no way they can replace them before they are out of date. Would cost big $$. guess they will try and do it gradually

A brigade I used to be in had rules regarding voting rights. If you didnt attend a minimum of training nights and monthly meetings you were deemed to not be in touch with what was happenning. Therefore you couldnt vote on issues or for people in the elections. Does any other brigades do this and is it enforced (hard to do)

Looking back at older issues of the Volunteer magazine (80`s) I see of some groups who used to invite MFS regional stations to their field days. Does that still happen anywhere?? It doesnt happen here (MT Gambier)

Country Fire Service / Re: CFS adopting spare appliances
« on: July 08, 2006, 03:40:52 PM »
Have to disagree Bill that truck is too godd to sit around as a spare. They should have kept Eden Pumper as a spare heavy pumper. Would save brigades like Mt Barker having to use 1980 model IH ACCO pumper from MFS. Apparently it is no good anyway. We used some of these ACCOs at the Angle Park training centre and they are unreliable. They are ok for training but not to use operationally. CFS shoudl have their own ready spares.

Well we had a pretty big house fire yesterday down here in the Mount. All of our red trucks were there and we needed help. We got Moorak and Compton CFS to the scene and Yahl for change of quarters. Everyone worked together well and we appreciate having the help down here from the CFS when we need it.

Incident Operations / Re: Naracoorte CFS busy = two incidents
« on: July 03, 2006, 09:45:21 PM »
well 24P and 34P appliances still serve a purpose for brigades that need an appliance(s) to serve a dual role of both urban type incidents as well as rural type jobs, So type 2 pumpers arent suitable for everyone.
24P,34P = 500gpm pumps. about 1900 litres per minute
Type 2  = 750gpm pumps. about 3000 litres per minute.

so yes there is a bit of difference.

You are expected to then ride for half of the calls you attend. This includes riding the appliance or doing radio in the station, so thats not to hard to achieve. The rule is too that you must live within 10 minutes of the station (travelling time).

Well a Scania fully kitted out is about $450k but the Dennis fully re-furbished was only about $100k. So thats probably the reason why.

SAMFS / Re: Retained MetFS
« on: July 02, 2006, 07:17:47 PM »
Well yes it is possible. But in a busy station like Mt Gambier it would be very difficult. We did 524 calls for the financial year just ended and you are expected to attend at least 50% of these. So to do both you would have to split yourself in two. Especially with training, station duties and all the other stuff you have to do. If you go out to a call with CFS and then get a call from MFS you are stuck.
