Being in a position to be able to use both CCBA & SCBA regularly, a CCBA will never be suitable for your standard fire service. Reasons - cost of individual units, unit testing time's, replacement component price and practicality of storage. Also after 2 hours in a CCBA the o2 you are breathing becomes that hot it becomes very unpleasant.

ps BG4 all the way

Btw Single rope all the Way

Ah, single rope may be easier & quicker to work with, but filled with single points of failure.

In relation to rope rescue .... mfs did have sapol deliver, but then went private, through a great adelaide hills based supplier and training provider ... unfortunately this has all lapsed and there are very few with any competencies left

That company has one of the most knowledgeable people in the world on everything ropes delivering training.

CnD, every brigade i have been in did not allow -18s to attend an MVA & if they were on the truck at the time of call, they wouldn't be allowed near the car until the severity of injuries was determined. For fires etc everyone is there with the same goal get the fire out safely. You tell me everyone involved / at a stabbing/fight is there for the same goal, it is a totally unsafe environment for a 15yo ie uncontrolled situation. As for actively pursuing them to step up, we also left it up to them to decide if they were ready. Nothing like putting undue pressure on a junior.

Straps, it was mentioned in one of the first couple of post's. They may have been there, they may have not, its not the point, it has nothing to do with the fact they are looking at an open stab wound, a person has just been STABBED,its the risk of serious harm to the first aiders. Are the police usually in attendance first?

Lets skip all the narrow, over vegitated driveways, lets skip all the questionable appliance builds, lets skip the long response times on windy hills roads, the answer is simple to all these conundrums A TRUE ONE SIZE, FITS ALL APPLIANCE.......The Boeing, yes sir house fires BOMB IT,... Factory fires BOMB IT,... Car fires BOMB IT and my personal favourite, Cats up trees ....oh yeah the complete salvo,....... happiness truly is wheels up and a wet pussy! :-D

You are an ideas man JAFF,
but imagine the complaints when the guys cant get on the pilots emergency flying course because there all booked up or theres no funding. I can here the crying now. Then you'll get a certain crowd saying how come Burnside can have a A380 Airbus and we only get a crappy 737-400, its not fair. :-D :-D :-D

Its about time the Show management put on HealthCare Professionals at these events. Whether SAAS actually put a number of Paramedics there, or private companies get to tender with properly qualified personell.

St John rostered healthcare professionals on every day of the Show, this varied from experienced Nursing Staff, Paramedic and IC Paramedic staff through to Medical Officers. Many of these HCP's are also accredited under the National Clinical Practice Guidelines and from my preliminary discussions with a few of the HCP's that were on duty, there was 10+ hospital avoidances with the patient  either being discharged to home or being returned to the event.

For what it is worth, (and many of you will still have your own thoughts), any cadet at the show after 1800 would be most likely a Senior Cadet, meaning approximately 15+ yo and would have a senior first aid certificate. They are a great clinical resource and a risk assessment is undertaken before each event as to determine the role / scope for cadets at events.
Cheers
Shane

Who in there right mind would contemplate exposing a 15yo to a stabbing (as it were in this case). It is f*&king disgraceful that St John would allow this to happen.
If they are going to be used as a first aider at events this big, they should be confined to a treatment tent etc. under the strict supervision of a experienced, fully qualified adult (and by qualified i mean training above first aid and by adult i mean someone 25+).

Very funny Jaff. :-D Sorry I'm no priest. :-o

Worked with St John's volunteers today at the showgrounds and experienced no issues.

Their response times to the incident was very quick. Always a senior with the juniors.

SES and St John have worked out a working relationship at the coal-face so we each know our roles to support each other. It was enjoyable volunteering with them.

I did not hear the media discussion, but we all know the media will go for the sensational aspect of a high public exposure incident.....

I will look forward has a SES volunteer to working with St John people on Saturday.

So potentially a person 11-18 was exposed to that stabbing incident. :?

Ever been in the cfs? If so, i would think you would show a bit more repsect to them
Yeah, have been for 15 years  :-)

Same as Darren. After that amount of time your respect level for the majority of upper level CFS types drops dramatically, as much as you try you just cant maintain it.

In regards to competion mode i mean verbalising everything & i mean everything.

With the practicality thing, we did a skills event underground with a guy in a grader suffering an heart attack, our medic & myself decided to get him the hell out of there straight away to enable ease of CPR (if required) and for the purpose of the drill the ambos were waiting on the surface for him. It took us 3 min to get him out & 4 min to get him back to the fresh air base. We got docked points for not doing a secondary survey before moving him.

There were a heap of other things that in real life you wouldn't do, but in comps they want you to do.

Hope that clears it up.

G'Day All,

Well it was a great weekend, alot learnt by all from OD. The winners were Northparks (NSW), 2nd Stawell (Vic), 3rd Rosebery (Tas), Fosterville, Oscar1, Bendigo, OD, CSA, Angas. 4-7 were separated by 2% and 1st & 2nd by only .5%.

Overall for a green comp team we did well, for us its just a mind set of remembering to get out of practicality mode & into comp mode.

Talk is we will start training for next year ASAP.

Cheers

Maybe its time for the vol's to get behind Euan and tell him to speak freely, and if the minister tries to sack you, they sack us to. No Vol's, No Service. Not sure a minister would want a walk out of an entire service hanging over his head.

It wouldn't even require the whole CFS. I personally believe that just a walk out of R1 vols would have the required impact. Seeing thats were this originated. Some may say its holding the government to ransom doing it this way, but if thats what it takes to get the message through that we are not going to put up with it any longer, then so be it.

F*#k it, I'm starting a Facebook group. "http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=206554085695"

Well it's now nearly 3 years since we have been able to get someone on a B.A. course so no need to worry about people doing re-freshers. We were able to increase our maximum numbers on our SFEC for B.A. but that doesn't help us at all when the service only trains to the minimum, and unfortunately the minimum is not enough for our brigade.

Yes we have discussed this  with the Regional Commander and promises have been made but at this stage we still do not have any one on a B.A. course. When you are doing over 400 calls a year with many of them requiring B.A. it is certainly having an affect on our response capabilities.

We have offered to run our own courses (we have nearly enough B.A. instructors and course assistants within the Group) and even pay for the use of the STC, but that has so far been denied. So we are now looking at using external training providers and paying them.

I think the bottom line is that we need to run more courses.

Hey Matty,

Just be careful with the use of external provider, not because of the quality of training but because CFS has a shocking record of recognising external training, even though it is done under the National Accredited Competencies. I am going through a battle to get 4-5 courses recognised at the moment.

Cheers JC

Have no idea where  i went wrong, no idea when next recruitment will be, have no idea how many are being taken this year. Starting to wonder if after five years of trying is it really worth the trouble? :|

Keep your chin up mate, keep applying. I know blokes who tried 6-7 times before getting through & if in your late 20s, early 30s you have plenty of time.

Good grammar & English must not be a pre requisite for getting into the Army. As long as they can shoot a gun, there will be no need to know how to spell it.

Go easy on our "wanna be grunt", he's got issues!

1 he's always putting his foot in his mouth!
2 he's always shooting his mouth off!
3 he shoots himself in the foot all the time!

Gawler is becoming a 2 appliance station in the next 2 years Roseworthy Responds to most calls with gawler because all the houseing devlopments are Roseworthys area or in a dual response area i think roseworthy might have to upgrade into a type 2 pumper station with the new developments with the factories and housing being built its only a matter of time that the brigade will be one busy station CFS should really look at that
[/quote]

Mate i think Roseworthy should try for a skyjet or something like Burnside's new pumper or maybe just push to take Burnside's pumper seeing they don't need it according to other posts.

me thinking that mr army may have another account going on the annoying non punctual hard to decipher posts he has been submitting remember your not sending a text or in a chat room you can take your time and think your posts through if you have a spare hour or two lol

But seriously army if had an ounce of knowledge about what Burnside have gone through, put up with & fought for to get this truck, then that pea in you head may have a different perspective on things.

Time to start doing entrance exams when starting SAFF accounts.
