mm i say if you want to be more proffesional or whatever... then make yourself sound more professional on the radio while using proper CFS radio procedure... no hang-ons from the days of CB, no over and outs, no roger that....

ALL Rescue / Re: Disc Cutter
« on: November 22, 2005, 07:06:42 PM »
re: disc cutter.... are we talking about for use at vehicle accidents?? if so then i wouldnt generally think it was a good idea at all... as a disc cutter versus metal tends to create a hell of a lot of sparks... and i thought one of the main things we did at vehicle accidents was try to limit ignition sources...

i would reccomend a reciprocating saw instead...

whereas: if we are talking about verious other jobs excluding VAs then i would say a demo-saw or disc cutter would be fantastic piece of equipment.... roller doors, cement walls, steal beams, aaaahh the list goes on, SES use demo-saws for a hell of a lot of USAR roles, and they can also be used for salvage ops, like someone mentioned the whole cutting through a gutter gig...

No, we are complicated and call our appliances cra p names like 24 Pumper.  What is wrong with following suit and calling our appliances like -  831, 299, 919 etc etc.   Imagine.. State Hq, 831 is Mobile.  Or Adelaide Fire, 831  is K1.    That is so much simpler, sounds so much more professional and I believe is a more effective way of communicating.

Poor OCOs... can you imagine how many appliance numbers they would have to remember?? not just the various appliance types which they could handle im sure.. but the differant station numbers also... and how many stations are there??? i think thats rubbish.

whereas Nuff Nuff 24P tells them everything they need to know, where its from, what it is. sometimes making things easier... isnt making things easier.

thats my point... per CFS SOPs noones meant to use numbers as appliance identities or k-codes...

As for following SOP's considerng a lot of CFS don't follow basic ones like levels of response and appropriate resources anyway what does a simple K mean....

well for a lot of minga brigades it could mean telling state or there bases the wrong thing... cos lets face it, not everyone in the CFS is a rocket scientest, and a fair few ppl have issues with basic pro words like over or out, or over and out...

fire03rescue: only ever had about 30-50 calls out of the new estates ove past 3 years... but my point is it has increased population in our area by about 1600 people (id guess, if you said there were an aaverage of 4ppl per house; and there are about 400 new houses to cover...

a handful of gas leaks (i would atribute these to construction) - a few private alarms - and a fair few brush fence fires...

The area that our brigade covers behind Mt Barker is one of the fastest growing areas in the state, in the not to distant future Hindmarsh island will have more houses than Goolwa itself of which probably only half will be covered by hydrants!!

im confused... arent you Goolwa brigade... becasue thats nowhere near mt barker...

Like us... we wanted a new truck, becasue one of ours is about to fall apart due to rust, and were told that our hillbilly 24 is suitable for our area, because with that and our ten year old 24p we meet our SFECs... even though there are two brand new estates (huge... estates) that have gone up since our SFECs were done, altho they claim to have re-done them and we still dont meet new truck status...  :?

btw: i dont think it was ever a part of the act/regs that you required a police check.... it says fill out the correct memberhip forms, which happen to include a police check... but thats just the way i read it... (fuzzy was a while ago)

pretty sure we had the powers to do anything we deemed necessary to fulfill our duties... except light a backburn, unless under an officers request/supervision....

James my understanding was that you guys wanted a type two pumper like eden hills but your group would not support your application??(correct me if I am wrong). The other problem we have, that some regional staff(not all) make up there own rules before they come out of H/Q and this is also causing problems when it comes to what a brigade or group should have in the way of appliances.I could open a can of worm but have had my large rear end kicked enough this year :-D

believe the group didnt want eden to get a type 2 either, were more after the 24P......

Just a thought..... - How about HQ ask the government for a one off grant to fit out all fire fighters with PBI Gold....?

because they probably couldnt care less?
why didnt they ask for a grant to fit out all firefighters with nomex?

i think youll find... if you search really really hard, that PBI has been approved for all non-rural incidents... so:
fixed alarms, vehicle fires/accidents, domestics, rubbish fire, etc..

just not wildfires/grassies but i believe cfs are trying to get it approved for that..

i have never seen any SOP or the like that states its onyl to be worn to structure fires...

maybve imtalking crap though...

The CFS COSO/SOP document is clear and states that no K codes will be used by CFS on any talkgroup including SAMFS.

swear i said that... lol

canman:
one of the main reasons CFS dont use k-codes is probably because... not everyone lives/breathes/shtis fire service. there are way too many mingas that couldnt be expected to rememebr k-codes.. most ppl seem to have a hard enough time using normal langauge and pro-words on radios.

but on the other hand they are'nt supposed to use them on CFS channels but they still do.

there in the wrong there as well !!! lol

btw.. it is actually MFS that requested CFS EMA brigades dont use the k-codes... so really there is no arguing as far as i can tell.. the brigades simply shouldnt be making there own rules... i think one of the offenders do come from a certain group though...

im not sure what everyone else thinks...
but surely all the EMA brigades out there know that the  S.O.P. concerning mutaual aid states that CFS will NOT use k-codes when transmitting on MFS frequencys... i qoute "k-codes are not to be utilised by CFS resources"  ?? :???

just that i was listening to scanner and couldnt help but overhear a brigade (wont say which one in the interest of not getting flammed/bashed whatever... and to prevent embaressment to them) who was determined to use k-codes for everything.. and then even thought it was appropriate to tell adelaide fire they were available in an MFS stations area... (using k-codes of course "adelaide fire we're K6 ??'s area")

surely weve all read our sop's? especially the ones that apply directly to us...

EDIT to include :
LOL... perhaps im just cynical and like to stir ppl up though... sorry.
