SA Firefighter General / Seaford Responses
« on: August 29, 2007, 04:44:49 PM »
Considering that MV and MFS cover Seafoods behind all the time for their calls, then yes. The call only got a few appliances because Seafood managed to get out the door...

...So at the most you should be getting 3 appliances to a rubbish fire, where is the fourth coming from??

Two trucks from Seaford, one from Morphett Vale & one from MFS.

They drove past me while I was parked on Commercial Road.

Theres your problem... Seafood don't need to be responding two trucks to a rubbish fire when they know that there is another 2 appliances coming.

Odd that.

I'd be interested to see what you're using, as well sesrcr, as as far as I know, Lukas have a single spreader spreading around 46tonne, or 101,000lbs but thats the highest spread force I've seen.... have you got really really old gear?

Unless you're talking about shears, in which 70tonne cutting force, ain't that special, Holmatro produce shears that have 94tonne cutting force, 70 is pretty average.

And yes, looked at FAG, Lukas, Hurst, TNT and Holmatro.

Oh dear, don't go trying to put time restrictions on when to use sirens. If its 3am, in a heavy residential area, and I'm coming up to an intersection, red lights and traffic around the place, those sirens are going on and that air horn is getting hit. I don't really care about who I wake up, I'm more worried about the safety of my crew and the timely arrival of my appliance to the incident.

I understand and agree with not using sirens when not necessary, but there are more times than just "stationary traffic" that you need to use them.

So my brigade and group should get appliances, half of which they will not use in day to day running, just so on the off chance we go to Harrogate, we can use them.

Good work :)

I was suggesting that areas where you don't fight fires from the back of the truck, don't really need the crew deck and could do with more stowage space for Hazmat/RIK gear.

With any luck the CFS will look at a NSWFB Type 1 build for their Urban Interface 34P's. Pull the crew deck off, giving added locker space.

Crew decks are great for rural brigades that use them for running grass fires, but in a fair number of the Urban interface areas, you'll be running lengths of hose off into the wilderness. As such, there is little need for the large crew deck that the 34/34p has.

if the mfs is so good why are 90% of the fleet 2wd and cant get in where the cfs can...

Because, shock horror, 90% of the work the Metropolitan Fire Service does doesn't require 4wd appliances...

According to Section 78 of the Australian Road Rules:

78—Keeping clear of police and emergency vehicles
  (1)  A driver must not move into the path of an approaching police or emergency vehicle that is displaying a flashing blue or red light (whether or not it is also displaying other lights) or sounding an alarm.
Offence provision.
Note — Approaching, emergency vehicle and police vehicle are defined in the dictionary.
  (2)  If a driver is in the path of an approaching police or emergency vehicle that is displaying a flashing blue or red light (whether or not it is also displaying other lights) or sounding an alarm, the driver must move out of the path of the vehicle as soon as the driver can do so safely.
Offence provision.
  (3)  This rule applies to the driver despite any other rule of the Australian Road Rules.

There used to be an advertising campaign, if i recall correctly, that was all about moving to the left out of the way of an emergency vehicle. Although nothing is explicitly stated in law.

They are meant to merge left, upon hearing or seeing an emergency vehicle... But you know as well as I do that when you're belting down the road and the appliance is being driven in either the middle or left hand lane, it causes a great deal of confusion.

Freeways and large multi-laned roads are the big ones. Because SACFS offers no real driver training in terms of response driving, people drive the appliances with a civilian point of view - Eg: I'm on the freeway, I'm a truck, I'd better use the left hand lane.

It would be really simple if emergency vehicles traveled in the right hand lane, regardless of the speed you're going...

You use what parts of the road you can... I've been in appliances coming along the wrong side of the road upto an intersection on a blind crest of a hill. Not great, but hey thats what you do when the situation warrants it.

Sounds very interesting. I can't say that I'd stake my safety on a device that calls for punching a hole into the thin metal skin of a car :S Not to mention that it really only stabilises around one point, rather than the multiple points of the Holton Foot.

So as to not take the SES thread too far off topic:

How is the StabFast better/different than either the FARA Side stabilizer, Holton Foot, or Imporvised Holton foot?

From the pics here: http://www.safirefighter.com/boards/index.php?topic=825.msg29881#msg29881

It appears as though the straps are on magnets? To be adhered to any metallic surface..?

No such thing as three grades, well at least in terms of CFS and the Green Book.

Hmm, that StabFast looks interesting. Without taking things too far off topic, how is it better/different than either the FARA Side stabilizer, Holton Foot, or Imporvised Holton foot?

From the pics it looks like it would take a far while longer to set up and is more complex.

You could call all of us firies, then split into vollo and permo...

As long as by vollo you don't mean retained...

I agree with the people here saying that if you're a Volunteer firie, you shouldn't really be introducing yourself as a "Firie" Its like the neighborhood watch introducing themselves as coppers.

Isnt the real question "How will rescue be resourced under SAFECOM"

Get on the journey boys and girls, there aren't going to multiple services for long...

231- primary response for RCR
only has has RCR gear with some storm damage gear built on an isusu 550 base

What extra RCR gear do you carry on here (Other than the standard stowage)? eg. Air bags, spinal boards & first aid, air tools etc?

Combi Tool and a Ram... its RCR gear! ;)
