SA Firefighter General / Re: Vic Bushfire Inquiry - Sirens

I like the outcome that would hopefully be achieved there Pip. But I do not want people in the brigade for the soul purpose of ticking a  box to stay in their new house.

the DVD i saw said the jet engine on the tank worked more because it "blew" the fire out rather than used the cooling effect of water. Although there was many hoses being used at the same time so there might have been some similar effect created.

the fun factor is cool :-D

the short of it, or my 2c, is small particles are better than 1 jet especially in confined spaces.

Especially in confined spaces, or almost exclusively in confined spaces?

I've seen videos of Europeans using this type of technology in compartment fires, and my God it looks impressive...

cones and fogs work well at scrub fires.

I am starting to think along the lines of we either need to be completely responsible for the community fore example with forced evacuations. Or be the opposite and do nothing this half and half situation seems to cause confusion.

Although at this point i support stay or go.

That was interesting.
The researcher is called to give evidence on page 28 or so

It did point out that people had to be active in defending there house, and a mop or similar wasn't enough.

This thread will be closely watched

it would be interesting to make the Senior firefighter position a time/academically obtained position.....eg  6 years and done the training courses needed, and heaps of Refreshment.   Instead of a position won by vote, make it a position won by effort.

Positive affect for the rest of the brigade? sure is....a shorter AGM on election years. ;)

But then we wouldn't have anyone suitable, assuming that frequently attending brigade meetings and call outs is a requirement.

Hi and welcome,

If you live in the CFS areas then the answer is a probable Yes Depending on your brigade check out www.fire-brigade.asn.au for more info on that.

If you are actually think of getting paid employment in fire fighting then it is pretty much a Full time career. Rather than a gap year job. in SA this would be with the SAMFS and i'll let others tell you about this.

Then there are DEH summer fir crews which are available and they tend to be from october to aprilish??? I think.

There are others on here who can tell you more detailed info but that is a general start.

I don't have much of a problem with this and think it is a good way to get community involvement etc. however if your brigade is putting kids on seats then is the appliance "off line" etc?

you have on option other than to use doctrine other than 50 is it. Yes i agree it is stupid and may cause difficulties etc.

But for example if there was a bad day and an FDI of 53 and there wasn;t a fire ban called and a fire called a death there would be huge consequences.

I would think it is just luck of the draw. My brigade is up, we have already done what we did last year and have had half as many AFAs.

Recently we have discovered that these firms that have large buildings in our area have been very welcoming for us to come and visit and do our own inspecting etc.

Well if it was unsafe it would have been thrown out as it was worn out an the active FF been issued new gear.
the 2nd hand gear i mean is the stuff you buy for someone who lasts maybe 2 years then leaves, his/her gear is perfectly safe and good.

I think it is a waste of resources of whoever does pay if all new members get brand new stuff then only end up staying for about 6 months or so.

Good to hear Matt, did those companies provide the training as well or was that outsourced?

My brigade attempts to issue 2nd hand gear at the start of a recruits journey however this hasn;t worked of late as we have run out of 2nd hand gear so a fair bit of new stuff had been ordered. I think it is a good move soley to attempt to save money.

OK mod hat on

We have had some complaints about this thread, as there haven't been any personal attacks and i believe it is all in good humour, i'll leave it but lets get back on topic and discuss training frequency.

com'on i can guarantee we would be able to safely roll to all the tree downs  :-D :-P

But seriously, I think although people scream "Its voluntary  so I'll come when it suits", but then go and play local sport and Never miss a training, they should be able to apply that commitment to CFS.
