Country Fire Service / Re: Blue vs. Green shirts under turn-out gear
« on: January 16, 2010, 08:38:38 PM »
The blue long sleeve level 1 shirts purchased by some brigades does meet the requirements because they are worn as a level 1 shirt in place of a structure jacket at incidents that do not require them ie: mva rescue, grass fires, getting cats out of trees.

Strength in unity....

A friendly reminder to them, no volunteers, no CFS.

Yeah cannot have a group officer who is smarter then the staff in the regions.

I heard it was region one commander....

Do they not have more pressing issues like lack of volunteers, lack of training and brigades not turning out anymore, would this not be more important then  fixing their own little grievance with staff members...

Well said Rainer...

I am very disappointed and saddened to see what the CFS management are turning the CFS into. How can brigades get shot down when asking for basic needs for the day to day running of their brigades. We need more hose, well sorry you do not need more then the standard stowage?? We need to replace our airbags on our rescue truck, sorry you do not need airbags to rescue people just make do with the 20 year old rescue gear yo have? We have new member and need more gear and room, sorry we do not have the money for that. It is not very encouraging to new members joining that we cannot fit them out properly and have no money to support them.

It is about time to stop the so called in fighting between brigades, groups and the like and stand up for the basic rights and needs of brigades...

SAMFS / Re: MFS COMMS STRIKES AGAIN

(Well, only in SAMFS, as they apparently never ever did when the SACFS heroes ran everything out of SOCC  )

Grow up ladies and gents...

Numbers the difference is when the ladies and gentlemen of the SOC got things wrong they got their butts kicked by not only the CFS management and regions but also the volunteers.

Have to go with numbers on this one, do not understand why you would not carry both make the bigger jobs so much easier. MFB rescues carry the tirfor but have the front mounted winch rated up to 8.5 tonne with the nylon being put on the new rescue winches to bring it up from 4 tonne with the old metal cable. If you can carry them all and lot of chains, hook, slings, d shackles etc etc to go with them why not.

Big Al your best bet is to contact the cfs fire safety department through the region. They should come out and tell you if your appliance is sufficient for the task at hand. Then from there it may give you more of a reason to look at a more urban suited appliance. Having boosters and suppression systems is just one of the things CFS look at, if you have lots of money in your piggy bank or have a chief in your brigade is another.

Hi all,

Thought i would have a say too. MT the CFA operate a course for the volunteers for every type of pumpping appliance they have. So as JC said if your in on of the 95% brigade with the old dakka dakka pump then you do the tanker course, then if your in an urban brigade you do the pumper course. It does not take 16 weeks to do but at least from the services point of view it covers them to say yes Joe blog knows what he is doing not only to pull some levers but the whole operation of the truck as a pumping appliance. Also having operated Dennis a few time with 2 supply lines and multiple lines out it did become a pain having to step over and lean over all the hoses to do stuff, so clearing the way for the pump operator is the way to go.

Big Al, problem is brigades need to allow for boosting in their SFEC which seem to not exist anymore, if a 34P does not have enough flow then they are supposed to be given a pumper. haha. But also i say if you have a type 2 and a house fire if used correctly it can supply up to 4 lines and a reel into the job and have other appliances supply it with up to four lines. I hate seeing jobs where each truck parks in front of the house and runs one line each. It has been implemented at a few jobs Mt Barker and Happy Valley have gone too, run a reel and up to 3 x 38mm lines with the 2nd truck assisting with a supply from a further hydrant. Seems to do the job quite nicely. You can have another truck nearby on standby with lines in case your pump dies.

Alex having been in brigades with the type 2 pumpers and older style cfs pumpers flaked hose is not a new thing. I remember having flaked 64mm on the old 32. The Type 2 pumps generally have a forward and reverse lay 64mm in the trays and then a 38mm attack line. Most fire services in Australia do operate flaked hose and can deploy them as attack lines just as quick as a reel. Reverse and forward lay can work very well if your crew know what they are doing, if you do have a well oiled crew someone can be dumped at the hydrant and lay into the job, if you know it is a going job and you have a good crew this should not delay anything. If your the second truck in you can reverse lay from the first pumping appliance back to the next hydrant or set yourself on a cross street/main road to supply water.
Having been to the states and seen first hand how the engine companies operate in many departments, yes there are a lot of things that are set up for the USA but a lot of good points in knowing you role at a call, knowing your gear, and knowing how to actually drive and operate a pumping appliance.

Fire Fighter Training / Re: first-aid training
« on: January 05, 2009, 10:54:19 AM »
Hi Guys

All you need for this program to work is as Robert said advance resus and the use of AED with maybe OP airways put in there. The MFB has had over 100 saves now since starting the program and for those fearing the rise in calls or the difficulty of training  do not stress. The MFB and CFA vols are at times lucky to attend 1 EMR call a month and sometimes you may get a run of them, it is on for CAT 1 cases where an ambulance is more then 7 minutes from the scene, most of the time your called off the job or only assist with compressions. This program is vital to get resources to these incidents quicker to make a difference.

Country Fire Service / Re: New Mt Barker website
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:04:40 AM »
It is aimed at the local community with updates on brigade activities and incidents but also community information and fire prevention tips. I was saying it is aimed also at an American audience because Mt Barker have built up some good relationships with other fire departments in the states who like to see what is happening in Australia.

We tried to write our stories using typical CFS terms as such but it really did sound strange and very unprofessional in a way, plus a lot of our audience of this site is American so had to come half way with the wording. If you have any other comments please feel free to PM me.

Most of the appliances are hand me downs or are new and there for a few years then moved on for political reasons.
