SA Firefighter General / Re: Urban Fire Brigades Are Better...

As volunteers we deserve training and equipment to an equal standard of those whom get paid. However i disagree with the thought of having hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars spent on stations that get used relatively little. It's a whole new world having to eat, sleep and keep ones self occupied while on duty for 10, 15 or 24 hours at a station, then you need an appropriate facility to pass the down time and be comfortable.

Another case of MFS wanna be's..... Why shouldn't we then just give all those stations that do, say 120+ calls a year to the MFS. Why should vollies be so put out attending that many calls. This is the real world we live in....

I have been a part of the driving force behind getting Nuri to get there's onto a truck.... a bigger project than i could have imagined, i offered to write the SOP, write a training package find someone to endorse the package and get it into operation. Too hard says CFS we have to do it our selves, yet no one at STC seems interested in helping get a valuable tool such as this in place, along with OH&S angle etc etc etc.... Bugs me though that we get away with a PPV, without any official traing!

On the introduction of PBI, it was only to be purchased as the NOMEX gear required replacing over the next 5 years. The NOMEX is still acceptable PPC for offensive structural fire fighting.

A lot of CFS staff i speak to agree that the PBI thing was not done well, and CFS has hopefully learnt from it.

SACFS has put in a cabinet submission for $500 000 to equip every SACFS BA operator with PBI over the next 5 years.

What to replace your NOMEX with when it needs replacing..... 1 set of PBI and 1 set of NOMEX... does get a little expensive and brigades are now saying no PBI till extra funding becomes available.

And really, do you think PBI would be on the top of the list for most of our guys on the Eyre Peninsula.....

SA Firefighter General / Re: Responding to Incidents
« on: December 09, 2005, 01:26:52 PM »
You are right oz fire. The role of the GO, DGO is, as i see it a support role initially, assisting the OIC of the first arriving appliance. Until the incident escalates and the GO / DGO assumes the role of Incident controller or Operations officer. There is huge advantages in having an officer on scene minutes before the arrival of an appliance.

The Fire and Emergency Services Act, States, "....an incident controlleror, if an incident controller has not been appointed, the most senior member of SACFS in attendance, may assume control..."  I guess its a mater of brigades ensuring they communicate with their Group Officers and have a plan in place of how incidents will be handled in relation to the response of Group Officers to incidents. At the end of the day it is the Brigades that elect their Group Officers.

A lot of GO's and DGO's put up with a fair amount of crap too (From above and below), so it's nice to get to a job and do something every now and then.
