Country Fire Service / Re: fire and emergency services act 2005
« on: November 20, 2005, 06:53:38 AM »
It sounds like they forgot to add all new members must have a police check rescue527 otherwise if that wasnt compulsury then anyone who has been booked for criminal offences such as drink driving, robbery, illegal growing of cannabis plants and so on can easily walk in to a CFS station sign up and off to level 1 training

I can tell you this Kalangadoo brigade doesnt let people in that easily they have to go through a Police Check then pass level 1

Anyway i havent even gotten the chance to read the new act but im hoping to try and locate it because my 10 years as a member with the CFS is coming up on the 4th of December    :-)

Yes CFS_firey even when SAPOL were on VHF long before GRN was even thought of it was very much illegal for bikie gangs, drink drivers, dope plant growers and home invaders to monitor SAPOL transmissions

However SAPOL didn't have a problem emergency service volunteers like myself monitoring their VHF transmissions because there were numerous occasions during the fire season/summer where Police officers were first on scene of a fire and radioed for CFS response

I can refer back to the Claywells fire just outside of Millicent during the 1997-1998 fire season i think it was..... anyway on that day i was monitoring SAPOL transmissions and heard that they were chasing after the fire to try and block off a road but couldn't keep up with it because the fire was moving too fast

On hearing about this fire i told my parents even before the pager sounded

« on: November 13, 2005, 08:49:45 AM »
Pump trailers like the one Kalangadoo brigade has would've saved emergency service personnel alot of time in early stages of the floods as the water could have been easily pumped out of flooded homes after sandbags were put in place

It's a pity that SOC didn't ask for CFS personnel from South East Brigades to respond and help out with sand bagging as i would've put my hand up straight away to help out

After all SOC paged SES personnel from the South East on Saturday as i was listening to Wattle Range SES respond to this callout on my scanner because they were at the Millicent show when paged

Would i be able to hear SLSA & Sea Rescue GRN TG's down here in the South East as Port MacDonnell & Robe have Volunteer Coast Guard Services that probably utilize the SAGRN...if this is possible Matt what SLSA/Sea Rescue talkgroups would they use

It's good to hear the scanner back online again Matt.. while listening to it i noticed S.L.S.A CH 1 come up on the screen is this SAPOL not using their usual Digital radios or is it another service

If it is SAPOL would it be possible that SAPOL South East is using Analogue mode instead of Digital mode as well  :-)

Every time Kalangadoo 34 responds to a car or house fire we have to park our truck on the side of the rod but before doing anything we place witche's hat cones around our appliance

In some cases like a few years back when we had an incident in  Kalangadoo 3 volunteers one of them being myself had to do traffic control by standing out on the road to direct traffic around the incident

Of course CFS traffic control is no different to my traffic control responsibilities for Limestone Railways as a train line crossing guard as this job is just as dangerous as CFS traffic control

But the added risks to my railway crossing duties is that I've got to stand a few meters away from the track while activating the auto warning signal and also make sure that no cars or pedestrians cross over while the signal is going

What area of SA do you live in FIREFIGHTER_SA... i live in the Lower South East and down here we have various businesses who can visit residential & industrial areas and give advice on what fire fighting equipment would be best suited for in your neighbors case rural area living

When it came to me installing an ex CFS fire hose onto my dads fire pump i called CHUBB Fire Safety and a guy came out to my place in Kalangadoo the very next day and gave me free advice on as well as fire hose fittings

It all comes down to what rural area of SA you live and what fire safety&equipment services are available there

Below is a few safety equipment providers in the South East who give advice as well site visits

* Mount Gambier Safety Supplies
* Safety Med Fire & Rescue
* CHUBB Fire Safety
* Green Triangle Fire Protection

the list goes on so all your neighbors has to do is look in the yellow pages under Fire Protection Equipment & Consultants

I would purchase both the book and CD if it had Region 5 frequencies, talkgroups etc...etc as well as freqeucnies for private forestry companies in the South East and media services too

Hey matt is there a chance you'll produce a book of South Australia scanner frequencies for SA scanner users in the near future as the ones i currently have are out of date

I would be one of the first buyers if the book comes on sale in the South East

OMGWTF is right on the money being that Kalangadoo brigade goes to sleep during the winter months when nothing is happening i need to have something to do such as respond to storm damage or land search

As for rivalry between brigades in the CFS kat,Kalangadoo brigade had a rivalry with Nangwarry brigade because we beat the pants off of them in a competition for their CFS trophy shield they a long time ago but now we get along just fine

« on: October 27, 2005, 09:30:09 PM »
Thats true OMGWTF i do live abit far away from any SES unit but the main reason i want to join is because Kalangadoo is a non RCR brigade and very rarely get's called out during winter

We could say that the rivalry between CFS & SES in both rural and urban South Australia is 50/50 but still i think it's abit silly for these 2 services to have a rivalry just because of a clash of who gets paged first to an emergency and who gets paged second as well as the uniforms being of similar colour

Other Government Agencies / Re: What the SES does
« on: October 27, 2005, 07:29:22 PM »
Thats very true David the SES often recruit a person who is wearing 2 hats but it's harder for us firies to become members of the SES so we have something to do during the off season

Believe me i have tried about 2 or 3 times to join the SES but have had my application rejected just because i wear a cap which has a red and yellow SA State Logo with CFS printed in the middle

Why cant the CFS & SES in rural South Australia just get along with each other like their city relatives do as this silly cross service rivalry has gone on for long enough and should stop

Sorry for the double post but can you monitor the SAGRN Paging Frequency 148.8125 in trunking mode or is software needed for this kind of thing

I looked into going for my MR licence through TLC in Mount Gambier but found out it cost more than i get paid fortnightly by centrelink

By having a LRT 14 QA unit to co-inside with our current appliance Kalangadoo 34, being that im always first to Kalangadoo base on receipt of a callout i can wait around for another brigade volunteer to rock up then roll in Kalangadoo 14 to the incident and if required call for Kalangadoo 34 to respond

Like i said before in my earlier post our brigade has alot of agricultural area to cover so having a 14 QA unit would make a big difference as the fire could be contained in it's early stage rather than after it gets worse

With your vast knowledge of scanner frequencies matt you should make a scanner book for South Australian scanner users

I owe you a big thanks matt for your scanner programming advice no sooner had i placed all of my ID'S and the data channels into my scanner and started trunking CFS State Opps 111 came on air  :-D

I am planning to put some more voice channels and ID's on my scanner later by the way do you know which multi agency/mutual aid talk group would be used in the South East during a major emergency or is that something i have to find out

Thanks once again for your help as now i dont have to listen to SAPOL digital transmissions

Well Penola & Millicent have a right to have 2 or 3 appliances as they are RCR & Hazchem brigades but you are right OMGWTF some rural brigades have what you call overkill by means of having 2 or 3 appliances when they only have a small area to cover

Whereas with our brigades we have large areas of agriculture, forestry and conservation parks to look after seeing the necessary need for LRT 14 QA units to be issued to the brigades

On numerous occasions when Kalangadoo was paged to an emergency the truck refused to start for unknown reasons therefore disabling our response and this would have been avoided if we had 14 QA unit in bay 2 as a couple of brigade members could have responded while the truck was being fixed

Which brigade are you from OMGWTF and how much response area do you have to look after is it similar or same to Kalangadoo

I dont think so OMGWTF but if the fire season/summer is really busy we average about 20 or so callouts and some of those callouts are large scale grass or bushfires by having a LRT 14 unit based at Kalangadoo station would not only enable brigade non MR drivers to use it, but to also respond and contain a fire before it gets worser

I'm aware that Penola & Millicent are RCR and Hazmat brigades but i cant see any reason why Kalangadoo cant have a LRT 14 QA unit as all of our jobs are grass fires on farming properties and scrub fires in scrub land

It would be real good to have a 14 unit in our station rescue5271 but i think we'll more likely lose or have to move the pump trailer out of bay 2 so that our shed can accommodate for 2 vehicles

There is that chance we might lose Kalangadoo 34 in exchange for Kalangadoo 14 but theres a likely possibility that we'll keep our 34 appliance and Kalangadoo Light Rural Tray 14 will be designated for the brigade members who dont have a MR licence and are first down the shed on receipt of a callout

You are right rescue5271 i should ask the CFS CEO if Kalangadoo can have a LRT 14 QA unit but maybe i'll put that on the brigade wish list and see what our GO&DGO say

Thats very true David and plus a Light Rural Tray 14 QA unit would look good in the Kalangadoo fire station as Kalangadoo 34 is our main response unit which is a real pain during fire season because of our drivers sometimes not being able to get to the shed on receipt of a pager call leaving us non MR licensed brigade members high and dry

By having a Light Rural Tray 14 QA unit based in Kalangadoo fire shed would enable brigade members such as myself who dont hold a MR licence and arrive at the shed first to respond and try to contain the fire before it gets worse
