MFS: *CFSRES INC051 30/03/09 17:54,RESPOND Assist Police,PRINCES HWY,STIRLING MAP 145 C 11 TG136,SAPOL REQ SES ATTEND,TRUCK BROKEN DOWN UNDER OLD MT BARKER,ROAD BRIDGE, P1,STRL19 STT020

Anyone know why the SES was requested? Not looking at starting a crapfight....just interested. Traffic control??...if so, others thoughts on this as an appropriate use of them?

SAPOL asked for SES as they thought they could use our equipment to perform a vehicle recovery. Not only broken down but stuck on the wrong side of the gutter. Ended up requesting a heavy towing company. :)

pardon my ignorance toward land search jobs etc... but given the initial call was just before 3, Norwood patrols had a forward command established on scene shortly after 3, STAR Group & helicopter around 4pm....

Is it really necessary for an SES unit to respond under lights and sirens to this job after 8pm?

The reason for the P1 response to this task is that the SES were called with a couple of hours of daylight left..
STAR co-ordinators requested that incoming crews came P1 as to get them searching before loss of light.
Our call came in at 1900, so by the time crews got organised and on the road it was 1915ish if not later, arrival of 1940ish, so an hour of light to do some good work in.

As for the building impact job, no idea why P1 45 mins later was necessary...

Probably shouldve ready MATTY's reply before posting, nothing like some good old redundancy

Police only called for assistance once their 2 choppers come up empty handed...
Montacute & NS were called pretty much straight away and Cherryville were requested by CFS members but not sure if they rolled to it..

I would assume though that if you have too many  people (eg 5 SES units & 2 CFS brigades @ 10 people each = 70 volunteers + DEH + SAPOL + SAAS + paid staff), it is damn hard to keep track of who is doing what to prevent the 'hurry, hurry, wait while we find you a job' syndrome.

STAR had it run really well
17 search teams in total, all deployed within an hour, which is roughly one deployed every three minutes...
My team arrived and was sent out within 10 or so minutes, very different to the usual hurry up and wait, so it was very well planned and tracked

why would CFS take on USAR when they dont even do land search to do USAR would mean so much extra training and purpose built appliances

Im not saying they will or wont, or suggesting they should.
They were asked if they wanted to be a part of it a while ago when USAR was first being established in SA, and declined.
I had heard they wanted to change their mind, but we all know how the rumour mill works..

Bajdas, I think you'll find the USAR Cat3 Course is the admin and management course, Cat 2 is your operator course.

Correct

If it's tasked as life threatening, and you aren't able to respond until 30 minutes later, would you respond another resource to it in the meantime?

Probably,
But life threat with SES responded should also have a BRT or BWT with them
I suppose I was thinking more of the threat to property jobs ie flooding
Water might be rising whilst its raining, but after the 5 minute down pour and the rain stops, the water subsides and its no longer a priority job to protect the house..
Units can get 10 jobs like this in a 10 minute period if there is an isolated rain patch, so by the time it takes a unit to respond and make a call back to the owners we can find out the waters flowing away and downgrade ourselves...

I would highly disagree with that
Unit manager and/or Duty officer has first descision as to what priority we respond...
And then as pip said OIC can make a decision.
MFS, as we are all aware, dont always get it right.

Especially in a multi tasking evening, what may have been tsked as a P2, and we only get to respond to it 30 minutes later, why the need for lights and sirens?

SASES / Re: SES Callouts
« on: August 21, 2007, 10:40:38 PM »
Only if there were persons trapped would you need to go lights and sirens though...
The difference that a minute or two makes going P2 to a job like this isnt worth making it more dangerous than the job you are responding to..
Units need to evaluate the job and not just rely on the priority of the page they receive. SES get call back numbers for a reason.

I agree, Trees down are not SES,CFS or MFS job unless there is a risk to the public etc. So when are CFS going to be put back on the paging for trees down and if there's no immediate risk, ie P3 / P4 why do SES get responded at all?

If a tree falls on a house, damage to roof and exposed to the elements, most of the time this should be a P3.
Agreed, more than likely not an immediate risk, but SES are responded to further prevent damage for example water entering the property, or just to simply make the home livable for its occupants..

Not exciting I know, and we may not be saving lives, but we are helping people..

P4, just MFS doing their job and passing on the tasking, we don't have to do a thing at our end but acknowledge and assess its merit..
