I agree you can't have them doing nothing. But lots of other tasks they can be doing.

It's not about high call numbers it is about risk.
If you used the call number theory, why would you ever have an Airport fire service or MFS in the large country towns.

CFS_Firey I think that is the way to go with the central brigade in the group to be paid.
Lots of other activities can be completed when not at fire calls
1 day at each station for brigade maintenance
Training
Pre Plans
Bushfire prevention
School, nursing homes etc visits

SA Firefighter General / Brigade Crew Problem
« on: July 29, 2008, 08:23:03 AM »
Lots of brigades are having massive crew problems. If you check the pagers site, you will see lots of brigades defaulting.
Some Brigades and groups have some great systems in place to fix this
Crew Roster
Duty Drivers
Responding 2 brigades in the day to any calls
But the big question what is the CFS doing about this? Yes they will try and help with recruitment. But this is not enough.
Don't just think this is a CFS problem. SES have problems, SA Ambulance have problems in country areas and so do the MFS in some country stations.
What is the government doing about this?
In some parts of SA I would hate have a problem and need help.

Withdrawn due to circumstances 190708
Best place for Private fire appliances in the metro and country areas " Withdrawn due to circumstances "

181
First appliance should go to the FIP to find out what is happening.
Second appliance should go to the booster.
I have been to a few jobs were the first arrvial appliance goes to the FIP and on arrival we have found that the fire is out, but the rooms are full of smoke with residents still inside. So other oncoming appliance are directed to the smoke logged rooms to help with getting people out.

When PBI was issued no risk assessment had been completed, but when nomex was first issued the risk assessment had been completed.
Which version of PBI do users have ???
hmm which was the version of PBI that caught on fire???

« on: July 11, 2008, 06:50:09 PM »
I think it's great what Burnside are doing, yes it would be great if more CFS brigades had the money to do the same.
But CFS only has a small budget, the 80's were great to some brigades. About 12 good appliance were built.

You don't need money for a boat, because the government's plan is to have a river with no water soon.

SA Fire Fighter Events / Re: Morphett Vale CFS - Equipment Day
« on: June 04, 2008, 08:17:47 AM »
It was a great day, the only disappointing thing was some of the cfs shirts that were bring worn. Some crew had turn out pants on and tank tops and all kinds of shirts. It would be good if the CFS had a shirt for days like this.
And who was the firefighter that had his PBI gold that had not cleaned, trying to show off war stories.

Some are just too busy to get it cleaned mate.. ;)

-And what were they to do if they caught a bell the night before?.. Just not rock up?.. - Dirty gear, part of the game..

To Busy for pride, I thought that post people that had PBI gold had a set of nomex as well

All Equipment discussion / Re: Metal items in pockets

LOL Hicksflat
I must resign straight away for putting myself and my BA partner in danger for carrying my 8.2cm, 190 grams, Stainless steel with anodized aluminum scales Leatherman in my pocket.
Last time I checked it sits in the bottom of my pocket, which does not touch the side of my hip. If my Leatherman did heat up, I must be in big trouble.
But it is in my pocket just in case I need it to cut some wire.
Fox does that mean that your fire service has no regard for your OHW&S, because you have been using BA's with metal plates for years.
recklessness, no just trying to look after myself with a small knife, just in case something basic goes wrong like getting tangled up.
Yes it happens, fishing wire is very hard to detect.

If you are in the building that long that the metal is heating up in your pockets you have some big problems. I carry a pocket knife, that has a pair of wire cutters. I have heard stories of firefighters getting caught up in fishing wire, very hard to detect.

All Equipment discussion / Roller Doors
« on: March 09, 2008, 09:29:33 AM »
Well after reading a few comments that some service can't get out the door because the power went out is a real concern. Bit hard to say you are professional if you can't get out the front door.
So what are the options??
Not all roller doors are the same, but a few options are  Back Up Power. A wall mounted Uninterpretable Power Supply (UPS) will allow you to operate your door in
the case of a power failure. Some roller doors have the chain installed that you can use to pull up the door if you have a power problem.
I think that the management of the unit needs a hand, just saying we asked the power to be for this to get fixed is not good enough. Yes go through the chain of command, up to the minister if required. If this fails go to the media. The public  deserve better. And the unit deserves it as well. I feel for the members who have given time up to go to a call and can' respond.

All Equipment discussion / Hooligan Tools
« on: February 08, 2008, 08:48:44 AM »
Hooligan Tools will break if you use the wrong hooligan tool. They have a few different designs.Any tool will break if not use correctly.
The PRO-BAR HALLIGAN is used by FDNY, you can get other types of hooligan tools I think the model is SPF which has different features.
You will find that the end is different one is used for cutting metal, the other is used for leverage.

Incident Operations / House Fire at Kalangadoo
« on: January 31, 2008, 06:27:38 AM »
From Adelaide Now
A HOUSE fire in the State's south-east destroyed a township property last night, causing an estimated $200,000 damage.
About 40 firefighters were sent to the Kalangadoo home after a triple-0 call alerted the CFS at 8.40pm.

The house is understood to be within the township and the occupants were not inside. No injuries have been reported or damage to neighbouring properties.

Fire cause investigators will arrive this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.

Is this Robert34 patch??

Country Fire Service / Re: More UFU crap
« on: January 27, 2008, 09:15:52 AM »
The UFU need to be very careful, we could all tell stories about  when incidents have problems. Lets work together to fix the problem before running to the teacher and telling.
I remember a shopping complex a few years ago that got out of control due to a major stuff up from a fire service person. Lets see the UFU talk about this then.

SAMFS / Re: SAMFS News
« on: December 30, 2007, 08:44:34 PM »
SAMFS have had many strikes over the years, but the firefighters STILL go to work. Just the tasks like paperwork, training etc will not be done. The SAMFS might strike  but will always attended calls.
In England about 30 years age the fire service went on strike and did not attended
fires and a woman died in a house fire, this was bad press and a sad day for the service.

Yes jasec is correct, the problems is that it is very hard to pick up water from the sea because it needs to be very flat and the sea is too rough. The other problem is the damage that is done by sea water to the environment, DEH said it is better for the fire to burn in the park that put sea water on the fire. It would do less damage.

Introductions / Re: Introduction
« on: August 16, 2007, 01:53:18 PM »
Off topic, but I have seen both CFS & MFS that need  a lot of room for improvement. So you can't tarnish all with the same brush. I think both service do a great job.
If they need to put in more MFS stations to protect the community  it should be done if waranted.
