SA Firefighter General / Re: Interesting Fire and Emergency Related Paging

I think what you are seeing is the new (informal) arrangement between Sturt, Lofty, Mawson (maybe) and Heyson (maybe) to rapidly turn out what they need and then worry about the formalities later.

Their base responds to the page on TG124 and then runs the incident including extra resources, its just a different way of operating......has fors and againsts, but it works for them, and I've always found them pretty on the ball to work with, or respond into their area.....so if its not broke, dont worry about it
Worry about formalities later, what a royal commission, isn't the whole point of one CRD centre to eliminate people doing their own things, by turning out their own resources then no one knows what resources have been deployed or the status of brigade resources because it has not been dispatched and noted on the system? Imagine one day if there was multiple jobs on and they said let's respond stirling to another grass fire, oh sorry sturt group sent them out a while back, should Adelaide fire be made to ring the sturt base every time they turn a job out to make sure they haven;t already got it at something else?

So are the staff involved in pushing through their unions for more staff and better pay and conditions or is just the Volunteer association?

Having paid CFS would not work,CFS seem to want to be the CFA, the CFA have a long history of paid staff and even now Victoria will see one fire service in the future. Maybe MFS need to adapt more to rural fire fighting and then there would be no need for paid CFS in these Urban/Rural settings? CFS have paid staff who as Rainer said outrank on shift fireman but have no fire operations training to be on shift fire fighters, i doubt most of them would pass the testing.

Incident Operations / Re: 3rd Alarm Factory Fire Mt Barker
« on: December 01, 2009, 08:25:19 AM »
Yesterday was another situation that highlighted SA needing some sort of paid fire service in large country centres to get a sufficient response for fires.

Chirst would someone tell the MFESB that they've got our damn Grand Prix, so can they leave poor SA alone? Mind you, if you went to the UFU about it...

Interesting comment go to the UFU about it well it seems to work and they are getting good pay, conditions and manning in Victoria

Mt Barker can easily gain a 4th appliance and crew it then....that cover's 2 alarms.

What is Mt Barker getting a 4th appliance going to solve. For example the day of this 3rd alarm they had a manning of 7 on 2 trucks. say it was the day before or a week later and they only had a manning of 2 and there back up was the same then I am sure the business owners around that industrial estate would be a tad worried this is there coverage. Mt Barker will eventually have to staff 2 trucks with the MFS to cover both the town and surrounding rescue area. Meadows, stirling, lobethal, strath ses and even mt barker have struggled to provide sufficient rescue crews in the past year during the day. Take CFA for example they will have up to 2000 staff in Victoria to not only support majors towns but to respond up to 30km out of their primary area to support the volunteers.

The lack of pumpers does this then become a state government issue, if they will not put on more full time firefighters and appliances to cover this great short fall then do they supply CFS with more pumps??? Would not hurt CFS to have 20 pumpers within 30 minutes of the city.

Why do MFS not use their own retained firefighters, would the 2nd pumps from Murray Bridge and Victor Harbor not be better then a 34P, Tanunda MFS could have left their patch to cover northern areas.

Just wondering is it the equipment or experience that required a MFS so badly, what is wrong with the next CFS rescue?

Stirling i see is a very good position to have the roughly 4 or 5 appliances.  They are pretty much going to be the ones fighting the fire and delivering the water to the upper sturt crew's....if Belair national park goes up....all at the same time.
I think Stirling have bitten off more then they can chew on this one, they struggle to get 1 truck out the door let alone crew 5 trucks...They would be way above their standards with 5 trucks. Give them a pumper, 34p and 24 maybe the group tanker and pention their old trucks off. One more little truck will not do anything when "THE BIG ONE" hits and you will be getting help from a lot more groups and regions when the time arises.

Chook word is a lot will change after the royal commission. The UFU is wanting one fire service, a lot of it's members want one fire service. CFA are increasing their manning in a lot of stations and manning new stations in the next few years to further support rural areas and larger country centres.

SAMFS / Re: MFS COMMS STRIKES AGAIN

How much does it cost every time an appliance turns out......more to the point how much does it cost when 2 trucks turn out for what was requested as a low priority attendance for a fluid spill??????

How much is a life worth, the job is not always as it seems? Why do you all worry about cost...the money isn't coming out of your own account.

Country Fire Service / CFS STAFF BEING VOLUNTEER OFFICERS
« on: April 26, 2009, 11:14:51 PM »
Hi crew,

I have heard that a regional commander is trying to stop all CFS staff being officers in their volunteer brigades??

I can understand maybe operational regional staff not being officers in the brigades that are in their region but staff officers and the like being cut from this they will loose such a lot of quality experience from brigades. I thought the CFS was short of volunteers and this is not a wise move, i believe if this gets passed then this will cause brigades more harm then good.

Yes i do have many facts about the job and phone calls were made, this comes down to an operator not knowing his job and when things do go wrong still not knowing how to fix it...Seemed to work ok when cfs were running both services with just 2 people...

SAMFS / MFS COMMS STRIKES AGAIN
« on: April 25, 2009, 12:58:39 PM »
Is it just me or does something seriously need to change with the operators in MFS comms in the way they handle both call receipt and dispatch of both CFS and SES jobs. In standards of Comms centres they are very poor in service delivery and accountability for wrong responses.

Like the following do you apologise to the person that died in the car from serious injuries because someone just could not join the dots, know your job and know your responses:

11:24:11 25-04-09 MFS: *CFSRES INC051 25/04/09 11:23,RESPOND RCR,BALD HILLS RD,NAIRNE MAP 161 K 12 TG128,CAT VS TREE NEAR FREEWAY UNDERPASS FROM,SAAS P1,OBA020 NAIR00

11:29:43 25-04-09 MBKR: *CFSRES: RESPOND MT BARKER STATION MANUAL TURNOUT 25-04-09 11:29

11:30:05 25-04-09 MFS: FROM OAKBANK, STOP MESSAGE FOR INCIDENT, STIRLING RESCUE TO ATTEND, FROM ADEL FIRE

11:33:16 25-04-09 MFS: *CFSRES INC051 25/04/09 11:32,RESPOND RCR,BALD HILLS RD,NAIRNE MAP 161 K 12 TG128,NEAR FREEWAY UNDERPASS,MBKR19

11:37:48 25-04-09 MFS: FROM MT BARKER CFS STOP MESSAGE FOR INCIDENT 51

I am sorry but i think that this needs to have a investigation into the service delivery standards to make sure things are done as they should be.

Good Job by the glen osmond boys by the look, didnt see many other trucks there doing much on the cctv footage. Would be interesting to see how much things would change if that was mfs area, i reckon 2 pump would give a few people a run for their money.

If it is CFS then 10 hectares is big...

24
Pip is right look at the big picture...Who said that all other MFS appliances were not tied up at other calls. If 339 is the next closest pump then it will back up 359, it is just a bonus them both being pump rescue appliances. You will find as more MFS stations get rescue there will be pump rescues responding with each other, one for the rescue and one for fire cover.

25
teddy my friend, see the thing is cfs do not even run an operate pumps course so most people would be confused when standing at the rear of a pump panel on this type of truck, so with more hoses in the way could easily confuse and make life hard for your everyday pump operator.
