CFS Cadet Corner / Re: what is going on with cadets?
« on: January 04, 2006, 10:21:44 PM »
I agree medevac there is no way at all you can do anything to help ppl b prepared for what they may c when responding to an MVA, even if you have looked at pics its still nothing until you get to the job and c all the ppl around ambos, cops ect.

As for all this talk about making ppl doing test i think that is just stupid, its a volunteer service so you dont have to go to an MVA if you dont want to, there is no point making volunteers do a test to c if they are good enough for the CFS. As for working alongside an axe murderer it prob wouldnt happen because we do have police checks which would prob come back saying something like that so you wouldnt let them into your brigade.

from my personal experience with cadets. They dont need live fire training or going to burn offs to keep them, We do live fire (extinguishers) every say 6months but other than that our cadets dont get to see muchlive fire and they enojoy it, we do lose some cadets but from what I have heard its not from being bored.

As for joining in on Adult training as casualties I dont see why they cant, I know we dont do it but im sure if we wanted to we prob would.

Im with the same brigade as Cybercitizen and its not just the fact that no-one is trained, CFS also have asked us to do a risk assesment on it, but training is also a big part of it.

24P did your brigade do a risk assesment? and what training if any have you done so you can use it?

I agree with your comment David, If they had used all the local resourses then who would cover the area if there was another job. Someone must have been thinking to do that.

Also whats the deal with on the radio on Wednesday arvo saying that SES did all the work of sand bagging and saving all these homes, CFS didnt even get a mention really. I was there most of Wednesday filling sand bags and even know it was a scheiße job to do, i think that we did the most important work cause without us ppl filling the sand bags who would have done it. So a big well done to all those who filled sand bags all day cause i think that we all did a great job.

All Equipment discussion / Re: Helmets
« on: October 14, 2005, 07:43:22 PM »
Yeah at my brigade most B.A. operators have 2 helmets. But some of the guys refuse to wear the bushfire helmet as it is just not very good! I cant think of what type it is, it is the first one that came out and the visor is so flimsy!!

I think that stopping people riding the truck just because they havent done the burnover unit is a bit dramastic! I could only understand if your going to a big grass fire but thats about it.

we did it a few weeks ago, and we also are starting to try and incorporate it into our training sessions so it keeps us all aware of what to do

I think that there is nothing wrong with white trucks, it makes the CFS unique compared to everyone else, so therefore we know which trucks are ours. I dont think that CFS will ever go to red trucks and personally I prefer white. I think it looks alot better!!!

I dont have anything that I could contribute but I think that a Fire Museum here would be a great idea.
I would support it for sure

Country Fire Service / Re: cost of fuel
« on: September 08, 2005, 11:30:39 PM »
I think it would be good if CFS did pay you something for fuel, But if they started doing that for evey  vollunteer then they would be forking out a fair bit of money. There fore you would end up losing money somewhere else. Which could mean that you might have to wait longer for you new truck or something because CFS cant afford it due to paying people fuel costs

Yes I will have to agree with the BA sets, I think with the lift down arms that can be moved to almost any height they are an excellent idea.
The lockers are good, i like the idea of roller door style similar to MFS appliances. As for all the other storage spots they arent bad.

Just wondering if anyone has any good or bad comments about the new 34P's I drove one at the royal show and its nnice to drive and love the locker set up, but there a few things that I think could be better. such as pump is a little more complex than normal and got a few people confused.
But overall i think they are a nice truck.

Incident Operations / Re: ?? (Interesting Jobs)
« on: September 04, 2005, 11:23:01 PM »
I really dont think that the car should be moved with a fatality in it, if you know you have to wait arounf for hours then get released from the scene then get SAPOL to call you back when Major Crash have finished, and do it on the scene. I just think that it is better than making a tow truck driver have to see things that he may not want to see.

Just a quick comment about people not going up a ladder on BFF1 course. CFS is a volunteer service and if someone doesnt feel confident enough to go up a ladder then that is their choice and I dont think they should fail until they have climbed a ladder.
If they didnt do it then they should tell there captain or officer so they know not to ask them to go up a ladder at a job.
And they can work on it at a brigade level where they may feel more confident

Incident Operations / Re: Friends / relations in an incident
« on: August 19, 2005, 08:18:38 PM »
I have been to a couple in about 5yrs but not really too many. I really just treat it like any other incident because as soon as you start to worry more about your friend then you are pretty much useless on the job.
I have never been to one with a relation but I could imagine that it would prob be different to a friend

OK then fair enough, I will agree that when I was a cadet things used to be so much easier because there wasnt any of these OHS things in place, were as now if you want to do something you have to do a risk assesment and we all know that they suck

We have got almost 20 cadets although we dont let them go to burn off, we still do some live fire training with them (like extinguishers). As long as you have the correct amount of supervision then it is fine.
As for this been the only thing keeping cadets interested I dont think that is true. None of our cadets have ever complained about it been boring because we dont do alot of live fire.
If you attended the Cadet supervisor weekend that they had with the scouts then you should know how to keep them entertained for the night. We keep our cadets entertained for alomost 2hrs every week and we have never had a problem. Plus most of the cadets that leave, leave for other reasons not because they are bored

I think that the thing about having two other people of the same sex is stupid, even though it might be a policy that CFS has made sometimes its just impossible to have that kind of thing happen in some brigades.
Some brigades only have a couple of females and they dont always show up for a job, so therefore if you put this thing into place then the person wouldnt be able to ride the truck to jobs very often and more than likely they will get bored quickly and you will lose memebers.
My brigade is very active with cadets and as I am a supervisor and was a cadet at one stage, I know that all of the officers that take a job are very careful with taking a young cadet who has just come up but I dont think any of them even know about this same sex thing as I have never heard about it before and I have been a supervisor for about 5yrs

45
If thats what they are planning on doing then I think it will be a good, Show the people how CFS has changed over the years.
As for the gas prop and comp thing I think if you have the right people they will make it a great event.

46
I think something like that would be good but a mock accident would take too long. But really something with flames as that would get the attention of all the audience.
The one that they did a couple of years ago with the five man attacks was good maybe something like that.

Country Fire Service / Re: Uniforms - Blue Workshirts!!!
« on: July 26, 2005, 01:47:01 AM »
I think that there isnt much of a need to make to work shirts nomex, I think that Hard Yakka would provide enough protection and it is more than likely alot cheaper than nomex.
Although nomex privides a little more protection I think cost wise it would be a little expensive and not all brigades/groups would purchases then due to this reason.

Hey,

Just been reading about the wallet. I think it would be a good idea, I would buy one.

As for people mis-using it I really dont think that any decent CFS member would go around mis-using something like that.
