Country Fire Service / Thanks - Horrocks Pass Fires
« on: January 07, 2006, 03:37:07 PM »
Hi there

Some thing we in society on occasions forget to do - that is thanking people for there efforts.

As a resident of the Wilmington area I would like to pass on my thanks to the strike teams and all the other brigades whom assisted us with the fires at Horrocks Pass on the weekend.

Its one thing that amazes me with the CFS comradeship and the helping volunteering spirit - top effort people, especially to give up your new years eve to help others.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Hi there all

Re - Fire Museum - there has been a commettee formed to address whether the possibilities of a Fire Museum in South Australia is feasible.  The first meeting is planned early in January.

Please understand this proposal is only in its infancy, but please note we do have the backing of the VFBA & CFS (Representatives of both organization are on the committee).

As a committee member I am asking the forum for any ideas & suggestion which will be put forward.  My contact details are:

E-mail - ([email protected])

Many thanks

Hi there

Its sounds like we have some very passionate people about the use of K- Codes.

At the end of the Day and its been said MANY time throughout this forum - its a breach of the SOP's.

If you would like to change the SOP's please feel free to discuss the issues with your officer or officers in charge and they will address it through the right channels.

I am not disputing whether is quicker - easer or sounds more professional but we have SOP'S in place for our protection.  If a few choose not to abide by these do so at there own risk and they may be liable for what ever repercussions occurs.

Thanks for reading

Great advise indeed - short sharp and straight to the point.

The SOP's are there to cover your behind.

Hi there all

Many thanks for all your responses.

As for the community blitz crew - We have never seen them as we don't live within the Adelaide Hills area.

As a suggestion maybe they should do some county trips to either field days or local shows for the general public to see what they have to offer.

Again many thanks

Hi there

You are correct Firefrog

SOP 7.1 -

Radio Communications.

All personal (CFS or SAMFS) when operating on CFS frequencies shall do so in accordance with the CFS SOP (K Codes are not to be used by CFS Resources).

All crews (CFS or SAMFS) when operating on MFS frequency's shall do so in accordance with MFS SOP for communications (K Codes are not to be utilized by CFS resources)

Whether this is in-forced is entirely up to you hierarchy.

Hi there.

We go to school for a considerable amount of time and learn to speak & understand Australian/English language.

My views we (being CFS) needs to either adopt K-Codes 100% or drop it because not everyone understands this form of communication.

I am not slamming something I haven't tried - we used them at work for a couple of years but through time they have been dropped.  We communicate with the English language and under pressure and we all still sometimes make mistakes - little lone using something we use now and than (being k-codes.

The mets us this form of communication as part of there training & occupation, the CFS is a professional service  but its not our bread and butter or something we all use everyday or within our employment.

I like to use the KIS method (I shouldn't need to explain this)

I am expecting to take a little flack over this subject but but it is a forum and everyone is entitled to the views.

Thanks for reading

Hi there all

I would like to ask a question to the forum.  I reside within a rural area (High fire risk during the summer periods).  As many can vouch there is allot of people opting for the rural life with a small parcel of land and resident (great country living)

I was asked the other day by our neighbors to show him what we have in place(Fire Prevention wise)as he was aware I work within the Emergency Services Industry.  I showed him our two fire pumps, ample water storage good clear fire breaks around house etc, with sprinklers and fire hose reals at two locations around our house.

With this there also has to be training & Maintenance, the pump must start and pump water - power isolation (roof mounted solar power)

This prompt him to ask the question "is there business who can help people like him to better prepare themselfs" - some would say "leave" this is up to the individual but is there anyone whom can professionally help people like this.

He did visit his Regional CFS Office whom gave him a lovely glossy pamphlet - but what he needs is some one to visit his home to give him some advise -to better prepare themselfs, and I assume there would be allot others in similar situations.

Many thanks

Hi there Anne or Blu?

Not to sure if we are allowed to kiss and tell but here goes as I have nothing to hide - I reside at Wilmington - work at Roxby Downs(Shift Worker) and my volunteer position within the CFS: part of the Mt Remarkable Group (Deputy Group Officer)

Catch you later and fell free to have your say.

Museum:

A documented letter has been sent to the President of the VFBA, CEO of CFS and Safcom - I have documented my thoughts..

At this stage there has been no positive response (just the lack of money saga) - with the amount of gear being sold off & wrecked there is almost nothing left to put into a museum.

I understand it would not be a cheap exercise - but could this sort of project be considered for some sorts of Government Grant.   The Museum in Sydney is majority volunteer based, donated building (old power house) and vehicles are loaned or donated and it turns over lots of $'s and the publicity is huge for promotional purposes.

A lot of people are now starting to see we a selling of our histroy at a rapid rate - almost giving it away for those who seen the last auctions results.

At the end of the day we need the hierarchy on our side so if every one documents there thoughts send it to the VFBA & CFS etc thy might start actioning and not just listening.

Many thanks - very passionate about a fire Museum in SA.

Rest in Peace FRED

I have been on nightshifts for the past few nights and was shocked to hear about his passing.

I only met the man once - and a true legend and the initial back bone of the Emergency/Country fire service in South Australia.

Farwell to a great man.

Hi there

I think we all flex the rules a little.

With the nature of our area (Hills) we have installed additional hose reels (2) between the cab & rear body pod on the 3-4 appliance.

We use allot of lay flay hoses, and they are used for storage (rolled up).

Also additional box mounted on the top of the rear pod to store the chain saw - the other lockers are to small.

Just the nature of human - make our tasks easier not harder

Update report on the rebuild.

The pump has now been rebuilt and back running - the vehicle is due to be painted in the next few days (depending on the weather)

Enjoy
