BIGGER AND BETTER

the age old argument I think its more

THEY HAVE IT I WANT IT, IF THEY HAVE IT IT HAS TO BE GOOD!

PBI is good don't get me wrong it was just the way that the honchos have gone about implementing it

12 Appliances are great it is a pity they are being phased out although not suitable for the adelaide hills (off the road) the shear pumping capacity of these appliances filtered (couldn't think of a better word) all over 24, 24P, 34, 34P and it gives most pumpers a good run for their money especially for its size.

Nomex only has a field life of 5 years if worn every day during those five years, and I hope as a volunteer firey you are not wearing yours everyday.

In answer to the question have I worn PBI Gold on numerous occasions, but no I don't have a set yet because my level 3 nomex is still in good condition and I see no need to waste money buying PBI Gold until my Nomex wears out.

In relation to OHSW in regards to hand me downs you can easily wash PPE which can be handed down to other people to use, but boots and gloves should be thrown away or taken by the person when they leave.

I am fully aware of the benefits of PBI Gold I am not an idiot, what I meant and I thought it was pretty eay to understand was why would your brigade or group buy you a set of PBI Gold when you have a workable set of NOMEX.

$1000 a set was a bit an approximation it actually costs more than that per set.

Strikeathird I think you are reading more into this than was actually intended and I don't see you offering up any answers to peoples questions.

interesting fact: the funds allocated by the state govt. had already been set aside for the initial purchase of PBI Gold, A small election campaign promise that had already been promised prior.

It is actually planned at some stage to implement 3 stages of BA
1. BA Wearer
2. Compartment Fire Behaviour
3. Advanced Ventilation Techniques

Just because you were measured up for it was no guarentee that you were going to get it, the only reason everybody was measured was
1. So that your information could be placed on a central database.
2. So that when your current set of level 3 ppe with liner expired that you would then become applicable to get a set of PBI Gold.
The inital standard said that PBI Gold was to be used where BA was to be worn mainly at structure fires for use in offensive attacks.
The budget allocation set aside for the purchase of PBI Gold was no where near enough to supply every BA operator in the State.
When the liner is removed from PBI Gold it does not meet the cuurent standard for wildfire protection, where as when you remove your liner from a level 3 Nomex jacket it does meet the stated requirements for wildfire protection.
Plus why would brigades and groups in thier right mind purchase sets of PBI Gold in excess on $1000 a set while you still have a workable set of Level 3 Nomex?????

According the the Chief Officers Standing orders
Recieveing and Responding to Incident Calls SOP 2.3

A Crew is minimum of four

And i think you will find that if you are responded by MFS that you only have 4 minutes to respond to the call or it defaults and if you are responded by SOC it is 6 minutes before it defaults.

What an interesting topic

I think it needs to be at the discretion of the OIC, and ultimately he or she is responsible.  But rule of thumb: 2 CABA to a grassy, MVA(in case of fire) three or four operators to a domestic:  but always try to have at least two caba operators to any job incase you are reponded to something else

lt dan has a good point however we roll with what we roll with especially during the day, if we have the luxury of picking and choosing we do it this way but if there are four of you there and its during the day its highly unlikely that you will get anybody else. Our general turn around for calls is anywhere from 4 - 8 minutes.

Country Fire Service / Re: FUNDS CUT
« on: June 16, 2006, 07:09:58 PM »
Its the way you read it I was not at all saying that the funding cuts were fair and just and that we shouldn't do anything about it but I was suggesting that the way that we go about it has to be different than just whinging and bitching, the top knobs don't listen to people who just say we want more and have no justification for it. There are brigades and groups out there that get a bigger budget allocation than others and only spend spend spend for the sake of spending. I am not sure what the best avenue would be to fight these further funding cuts, but maybe brigades and groups rallying together and telling thier local MP about the problems may get noticed. We need to fight together to avoid further budget cuts and not butt heads about the way to do it.

The non operational activity sheets are a monthly sheet to log when and how many hours you spend on non operational activities such as training, maintenance, promotions etc.. they can be aquired from State HQ I guess because thats who you send them to, I have never had to request any as my brigade has always had them.

« on: June 16, 2006, 03:54:12 PM »
That is to use the BATA Smokehouse (Smoke and Heat)
BATA Recommisioning (Compressor, Sinks)
You have to organise it well in advance because a state training officer has to be on site for the training and it also helps if you can organise your own qualfied BA trainer/assessors and assistants to help run the exercise
You can hire extra sets from the STC at a cost per set.

Country Fire Service / Re: use of training ground's
« on: June 16, 2006, 03:37:26 PM »
STC is actually not that expensive to use for training, so people need to be aware of what they say, we often use it for BA exercises and the price ranges from $50 to $150 depending on what equipment eg ba sets you use.

Country Fire Service / Re: FUNDS CUT
« on: June 16, 2006, 03:34:43 PM »
I think some of you need to take a long hard look at yourselves as volunteers and not just look at it from a whats in it for me attitude, just "spending" the money and coming in over budget is not the answer you just get people off side that way, as said many vollies willingly spend money out of their own pockets to aid their brigades along the way. The budget does not take into account what the volunteers do outside of operations but if we all take the tiem to fill in our non operational activity sheets than maybe what the volunteers actual worth is will become clear. So stop complaining about the budget cuts and do something about it use the saying think global act local.

Fire reports can be done on the computer and faxed but it is always a good idea to print off a hard copy for you brigade files, the computer based forms have been around for a few years now.

Some people have to realise that all our pages that we send out are there for public viewing, so maybe have your slag in the privacy of your own briagde station and not over the pager system. Happy Valley for instance sends out pages to thank their returning crews maybe we should all take a lesson from this. People always respond better to praise than being put down, the drivers won't turn up to a brigade that treats them with disrespect. I think we have to remember that people have a life outside the CFS and can't always make callouts
